I looking for practical information from somebody who's been there on purchasing a vignette for:

Austria,
Czech Republic,
Slovakia,
Hungary,
Slovenia.

I've purchased them for Switzerland, and know how that works, but some of these countries have an all-electronic system (such as Hungary), and I'm wondering what the best way to handle this is.  In Switzerland you can buy the sticker at some border crossings and many gas stations.  Is this true for these other countries?

thanks.

I've heard about the Austrian vignette but not in the other countries. I think the Austrian version is similar to the Swiss. I rode about 20 km of freeway in Austria without a vignette  EEK! Smile

I rode thru all of them, blissfully unaware of any vignette requirements  Bigsmile of course, I wuz never stopped by the police. That wuz 5 years ago so, things may have changed.

I don't remember riding anything that resembled a controlled access freeway (motorway) in any of those countries.

Off topic: Slovakia reminded me a bit of Northern California  Smile

It's been a couple years since I had to buy one, but I remember stopping immediately after crossing from Slovenia into Austria to buy a vignette in a service station.

Unlike Switzerland, where you have to buy one for a whole year, you can get one for 10 days in Austria. I don't know about the other countries (I certainly didn't have one for Croatia/Slovenia/Serbia) but the internet is your friend!  Wink

You can get a vignette at petrol stations in Austria (10 day or 1 year) and in Slovenia (7 day or 1 year - used to be 6 month only and changed now).

Except for Montenegro, where you have to vignette for all roads, the other countries apply this solely for motorways and expressways. I didn't bother getting one in Slovenia since I never set a wheel on any of the few motorways and took the risk of not having one for a few motorway miles to bypass Vienna and Bratislava.

I've nothing to offer on Czech Rep. For Hungary and its electronic system this website seems comprehensive on the subject and details how to purchase.

Be aware that your license plate number will be recorded on most (if not all) vignettes and it is your responsibility to ensure the seller has written it down correctly. If its a digit or letter wrong, the vignette is invalid and you will be subject to a hefty fine.

The Czech Republic requires a vignette only for cars, but not motorcycles

taken from a number of sources, this seems to be what I'll be seeing:

Vignettes
Austria – sticker [10 day - 4.50€]
Czech – not motorcycles
Hungary –electronic [1 week – 10.60€]
Slovakia – sticker [1 week – 7.00€]
Slovenia – sticker [7 day - 7.50€]
Switzerland – sticker [1 year – 31.50€]
Romania – not motorcycles

All of these apply to Motorways (which are obvious), and some apply to Expressways (which are not always so obvious when you're on one).  The fines for not having one are pretty steep.

I went through several toll booths on the way from Amsterdam to the Balkans and noticed a few had separate booths for vignette holders. I think Slovenia and Austria but I'm not absolutely sure. I didn't have one and just paid at the gate, didn't seem to be a problem. Croatia, they gave me a ticket when I got on the motorway and then paid when I got off. this was about a month ago.
