Ok - thinking about putting in a 650 parallel twin into the KLR.

I rode a Versys, and the engine can be made to fit, but the Ninja 650's are much more available to buy, and essentially the same motor.  I found one, in fact, but am thinking that the motor will be 'racier,' which would be bad for my application.  I should think the cams are different, and maybe the FI map.  The map can be changed with a Power Commander, I should think, but...

are the cams the only change in motor parts?

Are there gearing differences b/w the trannies?

Someone in Vancouver, B.C. did a very professional job of putting a either a Versys or Ninja 650 engine (I forget which) into a modded KLR frame and all kinds of smart upgrades. Result is beautiful and a great bike.

Don't have all the specs but I believe the cams are different and the Versys has a lower compression ratio (10.6:1 vs. 11.3:1). Can't help with the transmission ratios.

Thanks for the info - that build is certainly inspiration for me, though mine probably will be not end up anywhere near as nice in the end.   Lol

I've never ridden a Ninja 650 - I wonder how different the ride is...

I've owned both   The versys just has more torque down low and less grunt on top.  I am sure either would work for you.  THey are great engines.

I own an '08 KLR and a '09 ER6n and when they sit side by side I can't help but wonder if the twin will fit in the KLR frame. Now I know, it won't "fit" but it can be fitted. I always wanted a KLE 500 but they were never sold here and now I want a KLE 650.
