Is a 2yo leftover a good option?
«

We're thinking of getting a second bike, something my wife can handle and would also be comfortable and roomy for us two-up. With that in mind, we're looking at a leftover '09 Star 1300. The dealer wants $8400, and will add in the tourer package (bags, backrest and barn door) at no charge. Very tempting, considering they want $11,200 for an '11 1300 Tourer.
Are there any potential issues with buying a leftover? Does the discount seem fair? They sure do seem to want to sell this particular bike. Anybody here have a Star 1300?

I've a friend who has a Star 1100,
Nice cruiser, never heard of an issue.
I'd check how much depreciation you'd get nailed for the first week, vs. what it would be if it was a new one. Then get the one in the pretties color (you know that's all she'll notice anyways (just kidding ladies) )

I bought my VFR as a 2 year leftover and no regrets. One thing to check is the battery, have them give you a brand new one. I had to replace mine almost right away.

Considering all the leftovers that are sitting in the dealerships right now, I gotta believe that buying new is an extreme depreciation hit, probably down to what the leftovers are selling for.

Check to see if you'll need to complete any 2 yr maintenance like changing brake/clutch fluids, etc. I bought a leftover speed triple a few years back and had the 2 yr stuff to do at the 600 mile service.

I think leftover bikes are a great deal. As long as it's not a demo bike that's been driven for 2 years. Check out lakehillmotors.com their prices are similar, and they usually have one of the lowest prices in the nation.
The price they are giving you seems right if the bike is fully equipped the way a normal tourer would come. Just make sure they're giving you all the goodies, and you should be good to go.

Leftovers are all the rage right now. Go for it.
Beat the dealer up as best you can. Leftover bikes have lost a lot of value just sitting on the dealers floor.

I have bought 3 new bikes this way and saved a ton of money. If you plan to keep it for a while then it doesn't really matter how much it has depreciated. If you think you will need to sell it within a year or so, then you should look up what they are currently selling for used for that model year and see how far off you are on the price. If you are close, I would still go for it.

Got my FZ1 that way, just make sure they prep it properly (mine had 25 psi in both tires), 3 years later no issues and saved a ton.

I bought the Valkyrie as a 2 year leftover. great deals that way. used bike pricing new bike warrenty. Only drawbacks are, has there been major inprovements that you will miss and when you sale it it is 2 years older (lower resale) .

I bought a new Superhawk this way. No regrets what so ever! If the dealer is reliable, I think it is a just plain smart way to buy new. And remember you still get the full warranty.

Bought my FZ1 as an almost 3 year leftover. Only down side is tires are 5 years old after 2 years of riding and started to get a bit squirrely.
New tires fixed that problem.

We bought a 2 year old demo with 1700kms on it. The benifits for us was price, full warranty and the first service was done. I changed all the fluids right away for my own peace of mind and have no regrets. Resale value is never a consideration to me because I
intend
to ride my bikes into the ground.
Buying this way allows me to own some great bikes that I couldn't afford at full retail price.

I have had several leftovers, as mentioned above the only problem I ever had was the battery (dealer replaced it free of charge). Great way to get a "new" bike at a used price

We ended up buying the leftover Vstar 1300 Tourer for her last year, and she's very happy with it. In fact, I liked her bike so much, I decided to trade in my V-Strom for a leftover '09 RoadStar a couple of weeks ago. Got a great deal, and she's a big, red beauty. Kinda reminds me of Joan from Mad Men
There were definitely fewer leftovers in the dealerships that I looked at this year. Not much discounting going on with the new bikes either.

Well I didn't buy my C10 from a dealer, but rather a private seller, who had it dealer serviced, carbs cleaned with 950 miles on the clock, three years old.
Saved almost a full HALF off the new price.

That's how I bought my ST3 and I had no issues. Go for it (take the advice in the thread about the battery/tire pressure/general prep!)
