Finally, some drama

Last Saturday was a 3 bike day for me, this is the dirt portion of the day.
Things are looking lush on LI.
Hi!
I decided I needed new places to ride so I continued past a section I usually avoid. It's on the edge of a gun range and it is difficult to ride while hearing gun shots. You end up on private property for aprox 100 yards. I was able to string a few trails together that end up on an enormous property. Once I saw this mining operation I knew exactly where I was.
LI has sand, lot's and lots of sand. Sand is used in concrete, concrete is owned by the mafia, etc. Big business indeed.
I abided by the No Tresspassing signs but was able to use the many trails that surround the property. There were ATV tracks all over the place, this section is obviously used frequently.

Tons of trails in this area with lots of elevation changes too. I will be heading back there this weekend.
Im always amazed how people are able to get cars in the strangest places.
After several hours of riding the KLR starting to surge and buck a bit. Hmmm. I moved the petcock over to reserve but the bike continued feeling shitty and then starting poppinp on decel. Then it stopped. In the woods. Shit.
Bike would crank but not start, and the battery was getting weak. I finally got it started with full choke but then it would stall the moment you fed in some throtttle. After a few attempts I managed to get going with full throttle but the moment I backed off it would stall. This made for an interesting ride out of the woods.
Once on pavement it smoothed out and began running fine aat hwy speeds. Stalled at the first traffic light.
WTF? Checked all vacuum lines, looked for venting issues-everything looks good.
Turns out it needed gas.
Once filled with gas im back on my way.

I found the remains of an enormous paved parking lot. This dates back to an old horse racing track that never worked that morphed in to a flea market that never worked that morphed in to a mall that never got built. There are no structures left. Look at the condition of the guide rail!
There's a pretty elaborate moto cross track on site too.
The asphalt is so old the rock actually sifted to the top. It's like riding on marbles.
My favorite pic.
Epic.

So is your reserve broken?
No. It started running rough and sputtering going over a long sections of whoops. The gas was splashing around too much and the carb must have been starved for fuel. Once on pavement it worked better but I was too low on gas. The IMS tank still has at least a gallon of gas left when it runs dry (The forward tip is lower than the petcock and the other side of the tank opposite the petcock stores fuel too).

Ha, yeah. It does hold more fuel than the stock tank and offers great radiator protection (The reason I bought it).
You can lean the bike over as far as possible and let the gas spill over the back bone. This method frees up a gallon of usuable gas. When you are off road and gas is splashing around there isn't much you can do except have enough gas BEFORE you hit the woods.
