Running Out of Time to Choose
«

Gentlemen,
Looking for some advice. I have not ridden a motorcycle in 36 years. At that time, I was 23 years old and it was my first motorcycle which was a BMW900R. It was the premiere bike to have in its day. It could smoke the Kawasaki 900Z in a throttle roll-on from 80-100mph. Sure did love her. Rode it all over the U.S., as a disillusioned Nam vet. Very practical machine which brings me to this. I'm going back into motorcycling as my sole transportation. I always wanted a 4 wheel drive vehicle to go off-road but, they are not practical for everyday driving. I've got these dreams of taking my granddaughter with me in mountains to camp and hike as, it will offset her Mother's fast paced worldly ways. My granddaughter is amused at my resistance to change. I've never had a cell phone or computer. But, here using my son's computer, I sure have enjoyed this. I have narrowed down to one of two bikes that I want. It is the Super Tenere 1200, that is coming in November or the DR650. Please, and thankyou, if you will not suggest any other bikes. I'm going on sheer reading research for these bikes (by the forums, not magazines) to make this decision. The CEO of my corporation that I work for, says whatever I pick, I must ride for the next five years. In the 36 years I've been married to her, she has always made the right decisions so, I don't want to get fired. I am a has been boxer who still works at being physically strong so, please don't tell me that the heavy Yamaha will be too much bike for me to handle off-road. Sure is perplexing which bike to choose. Any advice? Thankyou. By the way, Yamaha is offering a chance to opt out of their PDP program by May 31, and, this is why I'm feeling a little antsy these days. Jimmy.

Jimmy, welcome to the forum. (BTW, I'm a man, but there are women as well as men on the forum and active riders.)
Please describe in a bit more detail the sorts of riding you want to do. For example how do you define off-road riding for your intended trips -- dirt roads, jeep trails, hard-core off-road riding? What kinds of street riding will you be doing? Will you be riding primarily with your granddaughter?
Here is some advice that you did not specifically ask for, but I think will be very helpful for you. I recommend that you take two motorcycle riding courses: one for street riding, and one for dirt bike riding.
The street one that I recommend: the MSF Basic RiderCourse. It's available in almost all of the 50 states. It will be a great refresher for you and your dormant riding skills. You can take the course on one of their trainer bikes, so you do not need to worry about buying your own first.
Info:
http://online2.msf-usa.org/msf/Default.aspx
The MSF also offers a dirt bike course. Info:
http://www.dirtbikeschool.com/
There are other dirt bike courses out there, but I know less about them.
I recommend that you take one or both courses
before
buying a bike. Once you've taken the course(s), you can self-assess how you feel about your riding skills and what bike will best serve you.
Make sure to put in your budget buying full riding gear for both yourself and your granddaughter.
Now, onto your specific question about motorcycle models.
Your message ties our hands. Your ground rules limit the sorts of input we can give you.
For example, you want us not to give you any advice on other motorcycles for you to consider buying. You want to ride off-road, with a beloved passenger, after not having ridden for 36 years. Frankly, my advice is for you to buy neither bike. Neither of them is probably right for what you want to do. Since you do not want advice about other bikes, I won't give any.
Furthermore, you want whatever bike you buy to be the bike for at least the next five years. I am an advocate of choosing your first bike -- or at least your first bike after an interim -- to be the bike on which you make your mistakes. Have your *next* bike be your keeper. But your ground rules preclude this advice.
I hope you find this info helpful. Let us know about further questions. Best wishes!

Well then, since you're so sure you want one of these two bikes, then go ahead and pick one. As for which one, it would depend on how "off road" you intend to go, how much dirt experience you have and how big your granddaughter is.
Personally, my first thought was the Wee-strom, but obviously you don't want any additional choices

Ran into that a fair amount, back in the day.
Glad things have changed; now there's
plenty
folks who don't belong on motorcycles.
(I too would suggest a used Wee Strom to start. Bad, bad stromgal.)

Thankyou sincerely for the good advice. Damn. Won't be back here anymore. Talk about a man hater. The "super moderator" sure comes across that way. Hell, I was just looking for advice between the two bikes. I'm not what anybody would seem as a threat in life. I stake my life on it. Women in the past have hired me to right a wrong in justice that has been done that the courts dismissed. I did my job well in that regard. My Dad raised me that way. So, here we are lady, don't know what happened to you in the past but, if you knew me, I can be your best friend in a dark alley somewhere that you are not feeling so arrogant. It was my mark in Nam. It still is now after all these years. So, maybe, you should take a look at yourself as to why you are so judgemental. Hell, I post these things when I'm somewhat inebriated anyway. What's your excuse?

Re "man hater:" I think you're off base here. If you read other threads on this forum, you'll see that there's a lot of banter around here, by the men and the women. A few of the women picked up on me catching your use of the word "gentleman," and ran with it. This was pretty tame by comparison with other threads. She's just one of the boys, so to speak.

Man hater? Moi? Hardly!!!!
cbsnbiker had it right: I was just messing with you with regard to your "gentleman" comment (and probably wouldn't have even done that if he hadn't called it out
My tone might have sounded terse but there was no malice intended. You came here with you mind almost made up and that struck me for some reason. That and the lack of paragraphs
I commend you on your brave forray into the world of the internets. It can be a difficult place (no visual clues or vocal tones to judge what someone is really saying), but it can also be an incredibly welcoming and helpful place. Keep the former in mind and thicken the skin if you plan to stick around (which I hope you do). Oh, and case in point: while you yourself said that if I had met you in person you would be my "best friend". And if you had ever met me in person, you'd probably think that I was a charming and delightful person. So the internet masks who were really talking to. Reading many posts over a bit of time can help to unmask that person (as cbsnbiker pointed out).
Sooooo - that said, Welcome!!!
PS - just re-read that you won't be back here any more. Perhaps I typed that all out in vain??

It is the Super Tenere 1200, that is coming in November or the DR650.
Go with the Tenere, its not much heavier than the 650 and unless you are wanting to get radical in the dirt, which I dont think you do, neither one of those is a good choice!
The Yamaha will be a much better choice for all around riding, with some dirt roads are maybe a few fire break lanes.
If you have any past exp. at all, and you said you do...I would not waste my time on a MSF course, those are good for riders who know nothing!

I disagree with Sprocket's advice on the MSF. The courses are excellent for returning riders such as you, bbBap, both to help you brush up on your riding skills from long ago, and to learn things that you may not have learned back then.

If your going to do alot of tough off road then no doubt the DR! Ridden them and they eat stuff up in capable hands. If your looking for a "adventure" road bike to comfortably get you to maintained gravel and dirt roads and maybe the every so often moderate stuff to traverse then the Tenere is the ticket.
I use to do the western NC stuff here on the way back to no where roads that had roads made of boulders; logs; or what have you............the DR was it! I then bought a DL650 or better known as the V-Strom......it was okay on the smooth stuff and small rocks but after that, you were trying to kill yourself with the street tires. Great bike for maintained dirt and gravel.
I am purely road now; it is my comfort zone to hit twisties and heat tires and hit 130 mph with no issues! I never really liked the tough stuff; mainly because fighting the bike all day made me sore the next day!
The Tenere can be too much to handle if the ergonomics of the bike are not right. Top heavy = bad COG which means battling a bike all day! Trust me, I have been there. And I too stay as physically fit as possible. I use to road cycle and to do 100 miles on the saddle was nothing......mtn. bike now and at 41 years old can still out ride most 20 somethings! But I am here to tell you.........a bike not really for off road is a hassle.
Good luck.

Do you really have to guess? Can't you read my sig line?
Many people can "r(i)de it all over the US," and still not have very good riding skills. Many people can have had excellent riding skills years ago, yet a refresher can be beneficial.
Why the hating on the suggestion that he take an MSF (or equivalent) course?

Why the hating on the suggestion that he take an MSF (or equivalent) course?
That sound you hear is Sprocket being torn to shreds....

Did you miss the part where he said he "rode it all over the US"
no. did you miss the part where he said it's been 36 years since last rode a bike? a few points to consider:
it's amazing how rusty people can get after just a winter off from riding, let alone years off.
none of us has a clue as to his level of skills back when he did ride. i've run ERC classes at rallies, and have seen some riders that must have ridden their bikes to the raly in the back of a pickup, as their skills were amazing horrible.
many riders have been riding for 20+ years, but with the amount they learn (or fail to), it is really just "year one", repeated 20 times.
MSF offers more than just teh BRC. for a I-used-to-ride guy, maybe the ERC/BRC2 would be a good chioce.

It sounds like you already have a Super Tenere on order? Delivery in November, but you are thinking of opting out in the next 11-days?
My friends and I met up at a distant dealer to see the elusive Super-Tenere this past winter. I was pretty impressed with it. But if it would mean that I'd have to wait until NOVEMBER to start riding again, I'd buy something else instead - or at least until November rolled around.
I don't know how you narrowed it down to a DR650 vs the Super-Tenere. They are two very different bikes with different strengths.
My recommendation would be to look at the Suzuki V-Strom 650, BMW F650GS, Kawasaki Versys, or Triumph Tigers. And to start using paragraphs in your writing! It helps.
MSF is a great idea.

What is the matter with you? What a strange reply...
As to which bike to get out of the two you are looking at. Get the Yamaha. It will be much more comfortable on the highway (which I'm assuming that's where most of your riding will be spent. Or just get the time-tested BMW F800GS. You liked the BMW you used to own, so you would probably like that one, too.

Well, this fellow Scott, e-mailed me, and, in a way asked me to come back to this site. Guess I'm here now, because he politely asked. Maybe, just this one time. I don't have time in life for harsh, judge mental people (everything is good in my life, what's wrong with yours types). I train professional fighters for a living. Yes, I'm a sensitive man, of a "fragile nature", if you will. Most fighters are. At least the good ones that I've had the privilege of training are. Back in the day, you would have thought I was Satan himself in the boxing ring. I was a nasty fighter. It was an alter ego that came out. Outside the ring, you have to be a gentleman. Most great fighters are. Something is amiss in our country and, that is a fundamental consideration and respect at first meeting with someone, whether you mean it or not. The oriental culture has our country beat hands down in this respect of life. I love training the oriental fighter to win in the ring. Outside the ring, he is graciousness personified. After a period in my life so long ago, I thought I would never say this toward an oriental. This has nothing to do with riding a motorcycle, and, I apologize for rambling. Once again, I talk too much when having a few too many brews. Anyway, After reading some of this stuff, I can tell you this much; thank you to those of you that offered advice about what I was asking to begin with. I've decided to stick with the Super Tenere that is coming and thank you again for helping me make the decision between that and the DR650 By the way, to the member that stated something along the lines of good riddance or no loss or whatever. You are absolutely right!( Dare you to have the balls to tell that to my family! Especially to my grand children!)

Fwiw, I think you made a good choice with the Super Tenere. The reviews seem to all say that it's a very well made bike. And besides, everyone and his cousin has an R1200GS at this point. You'll be the only guy in the neighborhood with the big Yamaha.

bbBap you've at least got to tell us about the Tenre after you get a chance to put her through the paces.
The Tenre may be one of the most anticipated bikes to hit the market, right along side the FJR from back in mid 2000's or so!

Glad your back! Really, people who ride I have found can be obnoxious at times but if you take it with a grain of salt and dish it back in a funny way, we all have fun! Then there is the ocassional assclown! But those can be few and in between I promise. The guys here are good people, you just opened the door a bit after throwing a few snowballs laced with gravel.

Lay off the alcohol, it isn't doing you any favors.
Well, "nater", You are right. Wish I could. Sometimes one wonders why he continues to walk the earth, while others around him die and, continue to die. Now, before you go off on your high horse about excuses or whatever, consider this. I'm back here am I not. It must be for a reason. Well, shit, I must admit, I sure do love Colleen's smile. My song to you and your husband is: Kris Kristoferson's "Help Me Make It Through The Night". It is a song that inspires intimate sex. It is a song I've always endeared. Not just "hookups". Something that this young generation of young ladies should take heed. I've always lived life on the edge. But, I swear. I do not understand why these young people take so many chances sexually with what Satan has brought about. It was not like this in my day. Anyway, back to you my friend. I can tell you are a good man. You're just too serious. You take me too seriously. Especially, when I'm drunk. Personal bio: I've never smoked. I don't dr..., I don't....dri. Damn it. Focus. I don't smoke. never have, for the simple reason, to fight you need all the respiratory power you can muster. Love you nater and you too, Papa Lazarashit. Not yet. Got a generic letter from Yamaha stating these bikes will be here at the end of August. Sure hope I did the right thing in holding out. I need something to give a shot in the arm so to speak. Maybe, it will be this motorcycle. It once worked.

Hope everyone is riding alot. My group of guys find riding cheaper than therapy! Damn psychs make enough money!

Well bbBap you've been around enough to know about people, and what you get on this board (or any other board) is not even close to what you would get from that same person face to face.
I've met several people from STN that you would think, by their post, were very charismatic when the truth is their quite the wallflower. Even better are the ones who are some kinda self proclaimed expert on motorcycles but ride like noobs. This internet stuff its the best!
That's why we have meets, I wont make Custer this year (I was there in 07), but I will be at the Arkansas meet next year! (that's my home field)
Well have some fun ridin then, separate the men from the boys! Yeah baby! So get that Tenere figured out........

You know Scott, sure hope this motorcycle will help me turn around again, like it did so long ago. It was total disrespect for someone on a motorcycle forum to "sweep" a member under the rug with the attempt to wipe Viet Nam from the map. I do not care if it was written when drunk. I meant what was said. We as veterans never got the respect that we deserve. Tell that "Orson" fellow, I'm asking, "what do you know about living boy"?. Don't verbalize too much with people. However, I do express things in writing. Thank goodness, Jesus, is no respecter of persons, That man digging out of a trash can for something or, panhandling for a drink, is as good as you or me in Jesus' eyes. Hell, he may once have been better. Sorry for my "wearing my heart on the shirt sleeve", so to speak. Maybe, the only people who like me are family and the fighters that I train. But, it'll do.

How did I become involved in this thread?
I try to keep things light hearted so, if I've rubbed someone the wrong way, it wasn't my intent.
If it was about the thread I moved from Beginner's Garage to Region 5, the reason I moved it was because the thread wasn't related to beginners. The thread wasn't swept under the carpet as there is a redirect link provided to show the new location of the thread.
It wasn't meant to be a rebuke. This section of the forum is for topics to help beginner riders learn about motorcycling.

I wouldn't say your in the minority in oyur thinking. Hell, in my job I see the worse of the worse. And I mean the worse. In fact, I have put alot of people away in federal prison for their lives! Does it make me happy, with a smile as I type, YES! Because there are bad people out there. As far as the panhandlers and people we look down on at times, your right. People fall on hard times and yes, are destined to the street or shelters. I try not to look down upon these people because tomorrow I could be in their place.
As far as religion and peoples views, I try to stay away from it on the forums mainly due to the mod and creater's rules. My job has made me cynical and a people hater to a degree. Mainly due to all the evil there is around us. Oh, don't get me wrong, I like honest hard working people that do the right thing. Love my dogs because a dog loves you unconditionally. My plan is to retire in 13 years with my agency then buy alot of land and insulate myself from the degrading society we live in. Do some farming and go for rides on whatever motorcycle I have at the time.
Keep your head up and know one thing, these forums will elicit bold responses because we all know, everyone is a ex-Navy Seal on these forums and Billy Badass! Me, I am just a person who likes riding and the ocassional cigar with a cold beer!

No, I'm waiting for my bike that now, Yamaha has said they are sending by the end of August. Nater, send some of the rain here! We are in a severe drought in North Fla. Anyway, with the small talk aside, you are a good man. I can tell. And, you are right. Beer has never done me any favors except allowed me to express. But, in this expression you get the best and worst of both worlds. Not making excuses. I'm just explaining the way it is for me. Thankyou, though for your friendship. Maybe, if it's in the cards, we will someday meet up on motorcycles somewhere.

I don't know why moving a topic has caused hard feelings. That wasn't my intent.
I simply moved your topic to Region 5 because you mentioned your trip the Nantahala region. There wasn't any political motivation, just basic forum maintenance.
If the Beginner's Section has topics unrelated to motorcycling, a beginner would have to sift through the topics to find the ones about motorcycles.
Once again, sorry we got off on the wrong foot and welcome to ST.N

Orson, I know you meant no offense. And, I apologize for my "harshness". But, know this. When people are expressing things on a site, no matter what it is about, for some of us, Memorial Day is what it is. My little sister is dying from cancer . She is 47. The same year as my Dad when he died from it. Hell, I do not feel a part here anyway. After all, what right do I have to be here or anywhere on a motorcycle site to say anything. Don't ride a scooter. Just waiting for one. But, know this everyone. You can keep these sites with your head in the sand all you want and talk about nothing but motorcycles. Yes, I look forward to (and envy) what you people experience. Then, maybe I'll talk about a whole lot of nothing too. Sure hope my bike will fix me. It did before along a time ago. I too, want to talk about nothing but, my motorcycle.

no. did you miss the part where he said it's been 36 years since last rode a bike? a few points to consider:
it's amazing how rusty people can get after just a winter off from riding, let alone years off.
none of us has a clue as to his level of skills back when he did ride. i've run ERC classes at rallies, and have seen some riders that must have ridden their bikes to the raly in the back of a pickup, as their skills were amazing horrible.
many riders have been riding for 20+ years, but with the amount they learn (or fail to), it is really just "year one", repeated 20 times.
MSF offers more than just teh BRC. for a I-used-to-ride guy, maybe the ERC/BRC2 would be a good chioce.
All you know about his previous experience is that he thinks an R900 was faster than a Z1.
