I think thats the going home route.
Just wanted to see if there is much for snow in the mountains still. I know we have lots up here.
Check before you do that route home. I think Hwy 40 through Kananaskis does not usually open until mid-June.
If your southbound route is aimed at getting to the border and/or Shelby as fast as possible, then just take the main highways. But the Coutts / Sweetgrass border crossing will be a zoo this weekend. The road between Shelby and Browning is flat and boring. But Hwy 2 between East Glacier and Kalsipell is very nice.
If it were me heading from Calgary to Kalispell
on a long weekend I would do either:
a) Calgary--Black Diamond--Longview--Pincher Creek--Waterton---Babb--East Glacier---West Glacier--Kalispell (need to check if the Chief Mountain border crossing is open yet).
b) Calgary--Black Diamond--Longview--Fernie--Eureka--Libby--Kalsipell.
c) Calgary--Granum--Nobleford--Lethbridge---Magrath--Dle Bonita (border crossing) --Cut Bank--Browning---East Glacier--West Glacier---Kalispell. (the Del Bonita border crossing is small and not usually very busy)
d) Calgary--Fort McLeod--Cardston--Babb--St. Mary--East Glacier--West Glacier--Kalsipell.
The three best stretches of road in terms of sport touring and scenery (in no particular order) are:
1) Eureka to Libby.
2) St. Mary to East Glacier.
3) East Glacier to West Glacier.
And if you have time for a day ride while in Kalispell do a loop around Flathead Lake (Hwy 93 west side and 35 east side). Take it easy on Hwy 35...it's usually swarming with revenue collectors.
