Looks like we are taking a trip to Kalispell this weekend.  How are the road conditions between Shelby and Kalispell? I have never been on that road- ever.
Should I ride down, or stay in the cage with the rest of the family?

Also, starting from Calgary, any POI along the way to hit?

Edit: whoops! Sorry - just noticed that you were asking about road conditions, not roads. Carry on...  couch

Just wanted to see if there is much for snow in the mountains still. I know we have lots up here.

Check before you do that route home.  I think Hwy 40 through Kananaskis does not usually open until mid-June.

If your southbound route is aimed at getting to the border and/or Shelby as fast as possible, then just take the main highways. But the Coutts / Sweetgrass border crossing will be a zoo this weekend. The road between Shelby and Browning is flat and boring.  But Hwy 2 between East Glacier and Kalsipell is very nice.

If it were me heading from Calgary to Kalispell on a long weekend I would do either:
a) Calgary--Black Diamond--Longview--Pincher Creek--Waterton---Babb--East Glacier---West Glacier--Kalispell (need to check if the Chief Mountain border crossing is open yet).

b)  Calgary--Black Diamond--Longview--Fernie--Eureka--Libby--Kalsipell.

c)   Calgary--Granum--Nobleford--Lethbridge---Magrath--Dle Bonita (border crossing) --Cut Bank--Browning---East Glacier--West Glacier---Kalispell.  (the Del Bonita border crossing is small and  not usually very busy)

d) Calgary--Fort McLeod--Cardston--Babb--St. Mary--East Glacier--West Glacier--Kalsipell.

The three best stretches of road in terms of sport touring and scenery (in no particular order) are:
1) Eureka to Libby.
2) St. Mary to East Glacier.
3) East Glacier to West Glacier.

And if you have time for a day ride while in Kalispell do a loop around Flathead Lake (Hwy 93 west side and 35 east side). Take it easy on Hwy 35...it's usually swarming with revenue collectors.

Route is planned. Going down on option B, and returning on option D.

This is my first "long distance" trip.  I am getting excited for it, and expect to have a nice ride report upon my return.
