It looks as if 2 or possibly 3 of us will be riding to Shady Valley TN this Saturday 5/28/11.

The route will be similar to this   http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Anderson,+SC&daddr=I-26+W+to:35.795538,-82.3717+to:35.95083,-82.18208+to:TN-143+N+to:TN-91+N+to:36.11982,-81.75595+to:35.93289,-82.01477+to:35.81946,-82.0769+to:35.1026249,-81.8558006+to:Exit+78+to:Anderson,+SC&hl=en&geocode=FQ97DgId69sS-yn7vnyaJmxYiDHfCm5WE_3FBw%3BFXGkIQIdyX0U-w%3BFVIyIgIdjBsX-yl1pf0b2wRaiDFh2mbLR6c4WQ%3BFe6QJAIdQAAa-yk1-xI956BQiDE5hQB1BFakkQ%3BFahVKAId8Kgb-w%3BFbAqLQIdcNEd-w%3BFQwlJwId0oAg-ymZ1IEqQ-5QiDFuoEsD3yplXg%3BFdpKJAIdzo0c-ynlBClE67xQiDFKAJ7OcQ7jHw%3BFcSPIgIdHJsb-ylX5Bo_m69QiDH6fz-9UClAFg%3BFaCfFwIdyPoe-ymXIZxmTw1XiDHXb1qXJCBW2Q%3BFWxYFgIdrlse-w%3BFQ97DgId69sS-yn7vnyaJmxYiDHfCm5WE_3FBw&mra=dpe&mrsp=7&sz=11&via=7,8&sll=35.81837,-81.903076&sspn=0.42037,0.84938&ie=UTF8&ll=36.1789,-81.926422&spn=0.836901,1.698761&z=10

I honestly don't have a clue.  We haven't even decided what time we're leaving here.  I may have posted this too soon b/c now another guy is going & if he goes he'll lead.  I'm hoping we'll get to the Country Store approx 1 or so.  Just guessing I'd say we'd be around Bakersville somewhere around 11-12.

I apologize for the uncertainty but I should know more as the week goes on.

Just thought I would point out that 197 at Barnardsville is gravel going across the mountain in case you didn't know.

I might get together for a little bit of the loop depending on what's going on that day.

Thanks for the tips.  I did know that 197 is partly gravel put the rest of that road makes up for the gravel.   Cool

The problem is that I've ridden to Shady Valley once & the other guy rode there about 1/2 dozen times last summer.  There's no sense in someone who knows exactly where we're going to be following someone like me trying to find the way & who doesn't even own a gps.   Rolleyes

I'll make a couple phone calls tonight & try to find out what route he's going to want to take & I'll post on here.

OK...there's been some changes & there's only 2 of us going.  It will be a C-14 & a FJR.  Sometimes getting people together to ride is like herding cats.   Cool

I've posted a revised route.  This will be the route we're taking b/c I'm leading the way.  I don't have a gps but I'll do everything I can to stay on the route but if we miss a turn we'll just find another road.

The two of us ride together all the time.  Most of the time I don't even notice him there b/c I'm used to seeing him ride with me so much.  The pace will be quick but in a safe manner.  We do pass cars on the double yellow & pick up the pace through the curves.  I don't really watch the speedo in the curves b/c I'm watching the road for gravel, animals, logs or whatever.  Through the small towns where the speed limit is 35, I'll usually run about 5 over.  On the back roads where its straight, unless I'm passing a car I try to keep the speed around 70 or below.  I don't like to haul ass & run triple digits down 2 lane straights out in the middle of nowhere.  If I'm getting a ticket it will be in the curves not squidding down the straights.  If I'm on a road where you have some curves & then it straightens out for a bit, I'll usually accelerate out of the curve & then hold that speed until I reach the next curve.  I don't twist it up to try to see how fast I can get just to get on the brakes for the next curve.  I've only ridden some of these roads once before so I'll be unfamiliar with them so that'll make me tone it down a bit.  There is some interstate on the route & on the interstate we'll ride about 10 mph over the speed limit.

We're meeting for breakfast in Anderson at 6:30am.  We'll be riding the route clockwise.  As far as what time we'll be where, we'll be on the road by 7am.  The best guess I can give you would be using the time google maps says it should take to get to each point.   If someone wants to ride, I can pm you my cell & we can meet up somewhere along the route.

If anyone has a suggestion on where we should or shouldn't ride b/c of bad roads or cops please let me know.    Bigsmile If you know the way & don't mind leading, then I don't mind if you lead either.

We will be taking it easy this weekend b/c it is Memorial Day Weekend & cops, squids & drunks will be prevalent just about everywhere.

We had a blast too.  I ended up riding 468 miles.  I got home right at 8pm.  I wouldn't say you took up the rear.  I saw you back there passing cars on the double yellow.    Cool

The Snake was by far the most fun today.  I thought the cops would be all over that place but there was no traffic from cars or motorcycles when we went through there.  226A was my 2nd favorite road.  Again, no traffic, that may have been why.

I never saw the Fish Hatchery Road.  We ended up going over to Lake Lure & down through Saluda just to ride Green River Cove Rd.

We definitely got to get some people together & head back up there & do it sometime soon.     Bigok

When we rode down 143 from Roan Mtn, did you have any problems with a silver Porsche?  He waved me by & then he tried to ride my tail.  David said every time he tried to pass him, he would floor it & tried not to let him around.  It didn't work b/c both of you were around him by the time we got to Bakersville.   Smile

Glad it worked out for you.  Attention from squids and the popo is why I don't bother going there on busy days or holidays.  I was in WV, but it would have been interesting to have come on down and met up with you guys.

That's exactly what I thought.  I didn't see a cop anywhere near 421.  Even the traffic at the Country Store was light.  There were a good many motorcycles at the store when we were eating but once they left, we never saw them again.  I thought Saturday on Memorial Day weekend, everyone would be out but it was real nice having such little traffic to contend with.
