going south from I-80, is there a preference of riding down 191 or 530? or are they both great rides?

That's a tough call. Both roads are wide open and flat from the WY border north. South of the UT border, both 191 and 44 (what you would connect to from 530) are pretty nice. North of the border 191 rides on some cool ridges, but 530 goes by the "Gtr Green River Intergalactic Spaceport"
. If it were me, I'd take 414 from Ft Bridger down to 43/44, then when I got to 191 I'd shoot up to the dam and back.

They are both great rides, I liked the 530 side better. Follow Justin's advice and take the short ride up 191 to the dam.
Don't miss the Intergalactic Spaceport either.

looking at the Google terrain view, 191 looks like the more entertaining ride all the way down from Jackson. the Intergalactic Space Station may have to wait. thanks all.

Are we talking from I-80 to the Gorge? Entertaining from a riding perspective? not really. Entertaining from a cool landscape perspective? yes. I like that section of 191, the landscape is really neat. Either way you can't go wrong, although you will miss some good riding on 44 - and of course miss the spaceport, but here's a pic so you know what you are missing

yes, from a landscape perspective. plus the Bates maps call out 191 as better riding road.

191 was a great road! Sheriffs were hanging out at the dam.

I like Justin's advice, re: 43/44 thru Ft. Bridger and Manila.... 191 once you climb up on the plateau is pretty boring - and the last time I was on that stretch, there was MILES of road construction and a lot of loose gravel.
We drove up this winter just to see Flaming Gorge (too much snow in the Rockies to ride over) - Jeanne had never seen it.
Hwy 191 was closed beyond Dutch John, and there was law enforcement at all the pullouts near the dam then too.

Marty,
How is the ride going? I haven't seen any updates on your blog since day 3.
Hope all is well.
