I've never been to Yellowknife and think I'll take a ride up there around the end of June. It looks like gas along the route is pretty easy and there's a decent motel in Grimshaw which is good halfway point to spend the night. That makes about 1400 Km's on Day 1 and about 1100 on Day 2. Maybe take a flight with Buffalo Airways while I'm there.

Anyone know what the route is like north of Grande Prairie ? My understanding is that the last stretch into Yellowknife was paved in the last few years. And the ferry near Fort Providence runs until midnight.

David
The road is pretty, pretty flat.
It is paved all the way to YK, and I think the bridge is now complete across the Mackenzie River.
If not the ferry runs from 0600 till midnight, I think.
North of Peace River its a stright run until Enterprise, NWT.
The nicer stretch of road leading into Peace River is from Dawson Creek.
Past Enterprise its a bit more scenic, watch out for the Buffalo at Ft. Providence, they are frickin huge.
Yellowknife is surprisingly busy, I lived and worked there for 5 yrs.
Its not the most exciting ride, but it is an expperience.
Good Luck
Darren
P.S. Have a beer for me in the Gold Range

I just found a bunch of Youtube videos of the bison near Ft Providence. Good thing they don't have any curves on that road. Coming around a twisting and coming face to face with one of those big bastards would create of world record pucker.

I'm serious when I say give Bison room, they will attack trucks.
Take note of the height of the fences, they are that high for a reason.
If you need any info, feel free to ask.
If you've never flown on a DC-3, do it, its the smoothest flight you'll ever go on.
