The dealer goes for the offer I give, and I can identify a bloody sound!

Ok, time to back up a bit.

I really, really want to replace my Cagiva 750 Elefant with something a bit sportier that I can do loooooong distance on.  Played with VFR's and the the new Suzuki 1250 tourer but nothing really got my blood pumping.  Plus as I've been unemployed for a bit, there wasn't a huge amount of spare cash left over.

So I finally found a 2001 Sprint ST for sale (late 1st gen) at a good price.  Took it for a test drive and fell in love with it.  Dealer appears to be having trouble selling it so offered it to me for a weekend to see if I got on with if over long distances.  Rain, Girlfriends work schedule and then a job offer falling through all meant that I couldn't take him up on the offer.  Bugger....

Now however, I've got a new job starting, and I find out that the bike is STILL for sale.  Needless to say I currently have the bike in the garage (as the weather is pants today), and have been giving her a damn good riding so far.  If he takes the offer I'm going to make, then she is going to be mine as of Monday  Smile

There is only one thing that worries me however.  There is a ticking sound.  Starting the bike up when it's cold there is a pronounced ticking sound from the left hand side of the engine.  This increases with the frequency of the revs.  Possible exhaust manifold just in need of a good tightening thinks I.  After it gets warm, it pretty much goes away.  HOWEVER, I noticed that once the bike is warm the noise if gone in neutral, but when I'm riding her, the noise is still there (albeit somewhat quieter).  It really is quite loud when it's cold.  Does this sound like the first thing I'm going to do with the bike is get a big repair bill?

Any ideas?  Attached is a pic that the dealer took.  If I get her then I'll be posting more.

Either an exhaust leak at the flange on the head, or a ticking valve?

How about asking the dealer to fix the tick as part of the deal?

Very typical of the '99-'01 Sprints. Triumph made some changes for '02, which mostly removed the "agricultural" idle sounds.  Should be just fine.
