Who are you, and why do you want to live there?

Is there a reason you are asking? Moving maybe?

I am going to watch this one but let me start from a view of a guy that does not live there but enjoys visiting.

- It is hot as hell during the summer months
- You probably would not want to send your kids through their public school system. Last I heard they had 2 of the worst top 10 schools in the US.
- The area is beautiful and holds a lot of history.
- It was the birthplace of the event that spawned your beauty of a state WV.
- Fun ghost tours

I am sure there is more. Lets see what everybody else has.

Not much help, but my son is living there for the summer while working as a materials engineer intern (metallurgical). He seems to like it.

I will respond since I know that area like the back of my hand............

Been going there since 1997 vacationing (Mainly IOP)............

- Married there in 2000
- Spent time in all areas and like MK96xj stated, hotter than 40 hells on the equator in the summer months!
- Can you say mosquitos if you live near the marshes!!!!!!
- Sand fleas!!!!!!
- Very humid and most of Charleston around the historic area is below sea level so flooding during bad weather is common.
- Beautiful....beautiful....beautiful city however steeped in history and tradition so far back you can stay busy touring even as a resident!
- Housing (good housing) very high!!!!
- Food is second to none if you like low country seafood of course!
- Look to private schools to educate children as well.
- That area of the coast up through NC......notorious for hurricanes but recently not so bad.  But you better bet another Hugo will come soon to that area.............if you don't remember that storm, well, all I can say is total devastation!  Even a few hundfed miles inland into Charlotte, NC on that one!

But if you can handle all that and the possibilities...............you will be in heaven!

How does this compare to Houston, TX?  I've been there in mid-summer... EEK!

Not sure............never been to Houston.  But heat in the southeast is a different type of heat than mid-west to west heat.  Az and the likes where I have been is a dry 100 degree plus heat.  The south is a humid 90 degree heat that zaps your energy as soon as you walk outside!

Two different climates to me.

Charleston, SC is one of the muggiest places you will ever go.  We tend to go in late September early October when the weather subsides just a bit.  But don't get me wrong..............outside pools there if you have one you can still swim in even in October!

If you go be sure to go to Bowen Island Seafood!  Great little dive right outside Folly Beach just south of Charleston.

If it gets too hot just search for the pineapple fountain and stand in it. Lol

That's what I did.

I moved here 6 years ago. I also vacationed here a lot as a kid. Most of what's been posted here is spot on.
-It's not the heat (although it is hot) it's the humidity. It's oppressive. You will appreciate central air like you never have before.
-There is more history going on here than you can shake a stick at.
-The historical downtown area (AKA The Peninsula) is the place to go for tours (historical, architectural, art and ghost), shopping, and good food.
-There are quite a few cool art galleries downtown, not often mentioned in lieu of all the other stuff.
-Mt Pleasant has some good food as well, and is closer to Isle of Palms/Sullivan's Island where many tourists rent beach houses. It's not really historical, except for Patriots Point, but there are tons of nice golf courses if you're into that.
-Traffic on and off the beach islands gets pretty nuts Fri-Sun during the summer as the locals migrate to the beach in the am and home in the pm.
-The list of recommended restaurants is too long to get into, but some of my favorites are Hominy Grill, Magnolia's, and Toast Restaurant downtown; The Wreck of Richard and Charlene and Boulevard Diner in Mt Pleasant, and if you're up for a drive out of town, Sweatman's Barbeque around Holly Hill for incredible whole hog bbq, divine hash, and unbelievable banana pudding.
-The worst thing of all about the Charleston area is the riding. Flat and straight. If you are desperate for a curve or two, I can throw you a few suggestions, but you're better off experiencing what Charleston is famous for than to kid yourself into thinking any riding you do will be much fun.

Not that anyone goes to the Chalreston area for pizza but we found a place a few years back that is out of this world to me!  It is called Giuseppi's on Mt. Pleasant.  PLus it helps they have alot of Steeler Nation paraphernalia!  Yes, I am a Steeler's fan!
