Hotel location in LA

My wife and I are taking a cruise out of Long Beach in November, flying into LAX and will spend the night coming and going.  What area of LA should we stay in, taking the arrival and departure locations into consideration?  We'll be taking a taxi to and from the airport and port.  I know about avoiding Compton.    We have most of Saturday and Sunday to play coming into LA on November 5th (Saturday).  Cruise departs on Sunday at 4.  Same thing coming back.  We arrive in LA about 9AM (Sunday) and our flight leaves the next day.  I may rent a car when we get back from the cruise.

Places to eat?  Things to see?  Thanks in advance.

I stayed in the Towneplace Suites in Manhatten Beach. It is on the corner of Rosecrans and Aviation.


Its a nice extended stay type hotel, with a small kitchen. I was getting a corporte rate of 80.00 a day, so I'm not sure what the regular price is, but it is comfortable, clean, about 10-15 min from LAX and about a mile from the 405.
