I agree with birdrunner's recommendation of the VStrom 650. I had a 2007 non-ABS model. It was boatloads of fun to ride, extremely fuel efficient, and handled pretty much anything I threw it into. And, on top of that, there are probably more farkles available for the VStrom than any other bike out there. You can mod the heck out of it.

I had my VStrom for about 2.5 years (got the bug and got a Bandit/GSX 1250 FA with luggage cause I could). I rode it all over hell's half acre and back on several long trips. It aquitted itself well on those trips, and was also a superb daily commuter. If you are planning on a lot of long distance riding, I would say that it would be better than the SV for that task.
