I was wondering what, if any, opinions you all have concerning the town of Carefree's new noise restrictions.  For those who aren't aware the town has restricted the decibel level for bikes to a maximum of 80 decibels.  That's roughly the level of a vacuum cleaner.

So what do you all think?

Before everybody flys off the handle about this:
There was a story on the local (Phoenix) news about it. (FYI: Carefree is a Phoenix suburb). The problem stems from the "Loud Pipes Save Lives" crowd. I've ridden through there on the weekends and it's a hangout/cruising ground for them. Carefree has worked with them to find a voluntary middle ground that works for both which is they will limit their RPMs in town to 2500. The city is having (or had) an even where the bikes are measured with sound pressure level meters (db meters) and the bikers guess how many dbs they're producing. A town official stated that they already had formal noise laws on the books and wanted to work with motorcyclists first to see if they would voluntarily reduce the noise.

I too have ridden thru when I had my Rockster.  All the Harley guys got a good laugh at my wife and I all geared up.  So I say screw'um.  It's their own damn fault, and they aren't learning quickly enough that they are shooting themselves in the foot.  It's sound checks now, and yearly full equipment inspections next.  Then it will affect all of us.

And if it was non-Harley guys causing the trouble you can bet the law would have been swifter.

Papa,
I went through while riding my red VFR and was completely ignored by the cruisers. The sport bike guys waved (of course).

I completely understand Carefree's desire to work with the "bikers". With tourism the only industry up there and so many bikers, they don't want to drive all of them (and their money) out of town.

I wish Tucson would adopt such a measure.  I live near a couple of bars where "bikers" hang out and these pin heads cut through my neighborhood in the middle of the night making so much noise.  The argument that the noise helps them be seen is pathetic.  If they are so concerned about safety why is  it that almost none of these guys are wearing helmets etc...  Maybe if these guys were a little more secure in their manliness they would need to make so much noise to feel macho.  I could go on but the whole noise pollution thing really pisses me off.  Time to go camping.

Good for Carefree.

I heard that Carefree was going to remove the motorcycle symbols from the signs.  The reason being is that it was making some people hostile  Headscratch  I guess from the pictures above it's true.

Seems like it's their city/township. If the "Loud Pipe" crowd was getting the locals all worked up, I can see that trickleing down to the politician. ...then you get the traditional kneejerk reaction.

But, Hey it IS their town. If you don't like their laws, ride around em.

Great

Now if we could get a noise limit on DEEP BASS  boomings, from those Hip Hop Cars. with the rattling paint. and body parts.
