From http://www.consumerguideauto.howstuffworks.com/logo-land.htm;

BMW’s circular emblem (roundel), with its two white quadrants and two blue quadrants, has nothing to do with automobiles. Before BMW began building cars, it manufactured engines for airplanes. The logo represents a white propeller spinning in a blue sky.

When I see boxer twin engines I imagine a propeller sticking on the front of the bike.*

*I don't believe the boxer twins were actually used or developed for aircraft engines.

They were wise to use a non-BMW final drive.  :pokestick:

This is true.  The propellor thing, although a popular belief, is not historically correct.

Interesting info!

The circular blue and white BMW logo or roundel is portrayed by BMW as the movement of an aircraft propeller, to signify the white blades cutting through the blue sky – an interpretation that BMW adopted for convenience in 1929, twelve years after the roundel was created.[8][9] The emblem evolved from the circular Rapp Motorenwerke company logo, from which the BMW company grew, combined with the blue and white colours of the flag of Bavaria, reversed to produce the BMW roundel.

So why does BMW refer to the logo as a propeller in their own museum? The sign doesn't say "the legendary colors for the state of Bavaria". (Or "Bawawia" if you are Lili Von Shtupp)
