It should be quite competitive to the Street Triples in performance, at least more than the smaller Monsters have been.  I was hoping Ducati would make this move.   Thumbsup Will it be competitive to the Triumphs in price as well?  That is more doubtful.

C'mon, you gotta pay to play Ducatisti.  Bigsmile

I love the 848-- but I'm too old and decrepit to ride it. It will be interesting to see what the riding position is like on the nekkid version.

Not ridden, just sat on...   so its hardly a thorough analysis.   More of a knee jerk impression,  but I felt they didn't really do much about going w/ a standard conversion.   It felt about as comfortable as a 1098 to me.    So,  I'm sure its an awesome ride,  but for me...  street fighters are supposed to have a more survivable riding position than a super bike.

Ducati has a lot of naked bikes; Hypermotard, Monster & Streeetfighter.
The Multi is semi naked, and of course the Diavel.

Kind of catches you off guard.

I've ridden one...hit triple digits even.  The immediacy of me realizing I needed to hang on for dear life when accelerating still puts a huge sh*t-eating grin on my face whenever I think about it.  However...

Why the EFF does Ducati insist on having the exhaust placed where it is on the Streetfighter & Diavel?  Its placement behind the peg pushes your right heel out to an unnatural angle.

With an 848 Streetfighter out there, the Monsters will not even register for me.

If they put a plush seat on this thing with Monster ergos, they'll sell a ton.  If they don't, it'll sell just about as well as the big Streetfighter.

So, how does one fight the streets when on a streetfighter? Can I ride my versys on the same route as a person on a streetfighter or is it not aggro enough?  Will the streets kick my ass when I ride my CBR?  Seriously, streetfighter is the gheyest term even invented in the motorcycling world.

No, I am certainly not.  I hope it didn’t come across that way.  Maybe all the streetfighting I am exposed to when I ride to work has affected my attitude.  All of these streetfighters fight the streets so hard.  Most of them lose actually. It’s like a fucking scene from Mad Max.

"Sport-Tourer" is more misleading than "Streetfighter".
A sport tourer is a 700 pound touring bike that was renamed to trick the stupid in to thinking they were buying a sport bike. Bigsmile

"ghey" is about the stupidest fucking term on the planet.  How can you possibly bitch about "streetfighter" when you use the term "ghey"?

Anyway, streetfighter is a throwback to the term as derived for naked but way sporty bikes, without the plastic and ergos suited for road racing.

AND - while the peg placement on the right foot does kind of suck on the Duc Streetfighter, it's an AMAZING ride.  Ergos are comfy, not cramped for my 5'9 frame (long in leg, shorter in torso) and I never turn down a chance to ride one.  Yes, they try to pull your arms off and you need to hold on for dear life if you abuse the throttle.

LOL @ Dan & his newly found favorite term!    Lol

re:  the bike.  I found it very uncomfortable,  putting the bars up front really didn't do much to improve seat position to me...   If I were going to accept that level of discomfort,  I'd just go ahead & get an 1198...  but, I can say my taste in bikes has changed drastically since I originally joined this forum...  meanwhile, I'm still bikeless!

In all honesty I thought “ghey” was the accepted, non-insulting version of slang meaning of “gay”.  I’m not anti-gay.  I would not use such a retarded word if I thought it was still going to offend someone.

Looking at the picture it seems that the bike has a handlebar, not clip-ons. Pretty upright in my book. A lot more upright than a supersport/superbike.

Yea, it looks that way... but the bar itself is almost a flat bar, & the 1098's back end is jacked up pretty high...   Plus, the seat is like plywood.

I can say,  Speed/Street Trips are both much more comfortable to my 40-something carcass.

15k valve checks is great - paying out the ass less often!

but...

pricing will be nestled above the Monster 1100 EVO.

Yikes, that won't help sales.  But I bet it's tough to price a new naked when most of your bikes are nakeds...

I expected the 848SF to be priced above the Monster 1100 EVO. More power and more sophisticated engine.

I understand that reasoning.  At the same time, from an average Joe perspective, the 848 is smaller than the 1100 Monster and probably will not have Traction Control and ABS standard.

848 EVO Superbike is $12,995.  Monster 1100 EVO is $11,995.... so they will basically need a shoehorn to price it.

The link I posted says it will have DTC. No mention of ABS. Not too many Average Joe's buying bikes in the $12K-$13k range. Ducati's market for anything above the entry level Monster likely understands the difference between the 848 tech and 1100 tech.

It's a really pretty and actually practical Ducati.  It will be less than the 1098 SF.  It's like an Italian Street Triple but sexier and with DTC.  It will sell.

"As with the 1098 Streetfighter, you feel sat 'in' the bike rather than 'on' it however  Ducati have fitted 20mm higher one piece handlebars which makes the 848 version so much more manageable.

"You still feel locked into place.  And on this very tight and twisting circuit (it’s very similar to a go kart track) you have to be quite physical with the bars and body positioning.

"The almost stop/start nature of the hairpins demands you have a lot of faith in the chassis and the brakes. At the moment the bike feels as if it’s geared for fast, flowing road use rather than a tight track. The engine is typical Ducati where the torque curve is almost flat, and it deceives you into thinking you’re not going as fast as you are.

"We’re about to go out for our second session where hopefully I’ll be better prepared for what the bike can deliver – and see how good the eight-stage traction control really is.  More soon."

I think that price is too high, but we'll see what the market thinks...

I was leaning that way...  i mean, I'd have to side to side demo them, but I think I'd rather have a Speed Triple, & its the same cost.

Every time I come back to this thread I see the comments on 'ghey."  I still don't get that term.  I've been meaning to ask one of my gay acquantainces (who I just ran into!) but keep forgetting.

ANYWAY -

THis bike will sell.  The Street Triple is one of Triumph's biggest sellers and this will dig into that market.  Will be very big in Europe, pretty big in the U.S.

Yes it would be an interesting to ride those back to back.  MCN's report comparing the current Streetfighter to the Speed Triple favored the Speedie for being easier to ride and more comfortable.  The flipside is that the Speedie is going to feel porkier in general, and likely a shade less sporty.  The MCN editor who tested the 848SF had high praises and predicts quite the competition in the naked segment between the SF, Speedie, and the new lower-cost Brutale 920.  I'm not sure, but I don't think the Brutale 920 has a similar MSRP to the other two in the States here.

Here are some vids..

Wow.  I can understand now why someone on a streetfighter can make it to their destination while I only get a couple of blocks from my house and have to turn around, go home, and exchange my motorcycle for my car.  The dude in the video fought the hell out of those streets and anyone daring to share the road with him.  Nice!

Just like the big Streetfighter.

I think the Monster line up looks much better.  And if I wanted more speed than the 1100 EVO, I would step up to the Superbikes.

The link I posted says it will have DTC. No mention of ABS. Not too many Average Joe's buying bikes in the $12K-$13k range. Ducati's market for anything above the entry level Monster likely understands the difference between the 848 tech and 1100 tech.

No ABS because it won't fit, per this article.

The US press release of the 848 SF was this week in Palm Desert, CA.

If you get to HFL quick, you can read their review before it goes private for paid users - http://hellforleathermagazine.com/2012/04/finally-a-real-naked-supersport/

The HFL writer was fairly critical of the suspension.  Also, they are not recommending it for town riding either.  But for canyons and twisties, it sounds like a good fit.  So, a nice toy, but not an all-rounder.
