So looking for input to what others like to eat while eating the miles? What kinds of snacks have you found to work well to maintain energy while riding all day? I typically like cashews and other nuts to snack on, and maybe some raisins or other dried fruit (not enough to blow a seal though).

Almonds for protein and carbs, Starbursts for a bit of sugar to keep awake as opposed to caffeine which takes 8 hours to metabolize and may keep you from getting the rest you need for the next day. Occasional jerky as well. Quality granola bars.

Cheese crackers, fresh grapes or the big Grandma's chocolate chip or oatmeal raisin cookies for me washed down with some cold lemonade or water with Crystal Light flavor packs.  Plain old water gets boring quick.

Jack links teraki jerky bites.

I can pop em as i go and they seem to work well for me.  Sweet, protein, easy to chew (don't bit my cheeks).

Squeezer put me onto the starbucks frapachio - great booster when you need it.

Yeah, I'm going to have to try that one. Might help with my sore old joints Sad

I like your jerky idea as well. About halfway though my recent BBG I had a craving for meat, and needed to grab a McDonald's gut bomb in Wells NV  Lol So I think the protein from Jerky may be a good idea.

I've been on a low carb high protein diet for the last 6 months, so I've just been packing jerky, almonds, peanuts,  and drinking only water and coffee/iced tea on the road. Sometimes a hard boiled egg, or some sardines.

I go much farther without getting hungry, and don't get the afternoon yawns. I feel much better than when I used to eat power bars, granola and Gatorade. I do miss the bananas, but I've also lost 42 lbs.

I usually have some of these in my tank bag for long trips:

http://www.chunksofenergy.com The Honey Pistachio or Mixed Berry are good because they don't have chocolate that will melt. The High Country GORP has M & M type chocolate candies in them. They're bite size, chewy and sort of sweet (not candy sweet). A couple of those at breaks keep me going. We sell a lot of the "chunks" flavors where I work, Mom's Organic Market. If anybody wants to try some, PM me, and we'll work something out. We'also carry nearly every kind of dried fruit you can imagine, including bananas (both the hard chips/slices and dried whole bananas). Mango, guava, papaya, pineapple, apple, and 4 different kinds of raisins, plus dates, currants and prunes. Wink

For hot weather, I keep a pack of the new Jelly Belly jelly beans that have electrolytes on hand.

I've been getting more into bicycling lately- turns out mountain bikers already have this stuff down cold. Here's my current long-haul menu.

Clif shot blocks- margarita flavor.
Clif protein shots.
Powerbar protein and energy bars.
Mix a shot of honey into your water.

On DNA's recommendation, I went with the banana chips and the beef jerky (Jack's, I think, the bit type).  Just drank ounces and ounces of water from the 5qt Coleman cooler.  Every second or third stop, had some powerade/gatorade.

Got me over 3K comfortably, on 12-16 hr days.   Thumbsup

Be afraid, be very afraid.

I've tried Clif bars and even though they're tasty they leave me hungry a short time later just like cereal does. Jerky and banana chips seem to be a good thing. Crystal Lite is a good thing too, flavored water is better than unflavored water. I also like Propel Zero flavor packs.

For me the big thing is not to change your diet too much.  If you don't eat many Cliff bars, don't go overboard.  If you like and eat meat, jerky can be great.  Just don't get crazy.  I drink water from a camelback in the tankbag, atomic fireballs when I'm getting bored, licorice, jerky, and trailmix.  With thiose things I can ride all day, no problems.

Dried fruit, nuts, jerky.  One decent meal (lunch) per day and make sure that lunch has a salad and veggies in it.

The biggest things I did prepping for my 50CC was to change my diet two weeks prior and to get into a stretching regimen each day.  Start eating lighter.  Let the body get used to the changes...

Oh, and stay the ever living heck AWAY from Kashi bars!  Those things give me gas like I can't begin to say!  (10 hours and 650 miles later...do I really want to trust that fart??>   Lol )

I've sworn off the carbs. I can ride all day on jerky, water, and some nuts.

If you eat a good meal, low on carbs but high on protein and fat, and you won't need to snack throughout the day. I routinely eat only breakfast and dinner on the road.

Drink lots of water.

I  fill the camelback with ice and a 50/50 mix of sweet and regular tea from McDonalds.

Thumbsup atomic fireballs  These are great when I start to get tired.  I can get in an extra 150 miles with atomic fireballs.

I will also carry almonds, peanuts and jerkey or canned chicken.

If it is just a long day ride 700+, I will just get up and ride, then stop mid morning for breakfast, then fireballs, and tea until the end of the day.  Then a good steak.

I grab a banana in the morning, on the road my stops are pretty brief and I don't get too worked up about what I'm going to eat.
I like the '4 for a dollar' jerky circles - easy to pop in  your mouth on the road. Other than that and water or a V8, I pretty much grab whatever sounds good and is quick & easy. Small bag o' nuts, trail mix...whatever.  Cheetos make my gloves orange Twofinger

Coming from OTR trucking, for me I usually have some nuts, shucked sunflower seeds during a stop, and some fruit. Water is important, but don't forget electrolytes! Ask my about electrolyte depletion, it SUCKS!!!! Eat a decent breakfast of some meat or eggs, fruit, and tea or gatorade. Fruit juice cranks up your sugar pretty quick. Coffee will cause you to be thirsty.

I usually try to grab a veggie of some kind mid-day. You can get the single-serve carrot sticks or celery. Try to avoid lots of grains and breads. Carbs convert straight to sugar and you'll get the "afternoon crash". You can also stop at a McD's, and they'll sell you 2 of the grilled chicken breasts without the sandwich fixings for $3.

If I need a quick pick-me-up and have to get it fast, towards the end of the journey, I usually grab Rockstar. It's TERRIBLE for you, but it works. Sugar-free isn't as bad, but still not good.
