Now and then myself ...

These three near Tullameen BC ... hot day and the KTM had some really bad gas from a crap store. Water it turned out and it was not fun ...  ( OK DD .. not Burrito Gas ! ) ... but the KVR runs through this place and I had a ball on the paved roads. Otter Lake Provincial Park is a wonder too. Great campground ...

Actually this is near Oliver on the dirt that crashed me ... Keremeos/Cawston is just over those hills.  Lol Cool rear brake failed and I took a dust bath ...  Bigok not fun but no real damage. I crash well, the KTM not a mark !!

Photobucket

That is the Kettle Valley Rail bed down there along the river.

How long are you out for? Looks like a damn nice place AND paved roads. Rear brake failed? What happened?

You throw the bike on the ground and it still doesn't get dirty?! That's got to be the cleanest dual sport ever = I should be so lucky with a street bike.

More pics please....  Thumbsup

LOL ... Bill, the first pick is pre crash and the other two are after much time in a car wash. I even sprayed my gear as I was covered head to foot with fine, talc like dust. I was also anxious to see what damage lay under that dust on the bike and very happy to find little, apart from a broken, front brake lever and a few scratches. Lever broke at the designated break point so was not critical but already replaced it.

The rear brake failure?  Not sure at this point.  Headscratch I just bled the brake out last week and added motorex 5.1 fluid, which is supposed to help with its higher boiling point.  I suspect the pads are dragging for some reason and after some prolonged use it just faded to absolutely nothing. Heading down, I was left with only the front brake and tucked it on a slippery section. Truly the dustiest I have ever been. It was also a very hot day there, around 34C so who knows what was going on.

The bike was also running like crap and had to add a commercial water remover, which worked like a charm btw.

Home now. But would love to explore more of the area.

Yeah... I got out too last week for a bit. I used the 'We need some milk!' excuse...
There really WASN'T any milk in the house, and my corn flakes get soggy too fast in beer. SWMBO was suggesting that I move some rocks or something to finish off the last few hours of a perfectly lovely afternoon... but I pulled the first logical excuse I could think of, and Tristan (youngest brat) and I had helmets on before she could think of why we shouldn't...  Razz

Down the coast road we went to the far eastern tip at Main a Dieu. Twisty road (scene of very embarrassing crash 2 years ago  Embarassment ), mucho scenic harbour, no traffic...

http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff227/Design3D/2011/2011-08-077.jpg

Continued on the even MORE twisty shore road through to the Louisbourg lighthouse and stopped for more photo opportunities...

http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff227/Design3D/2011/2011-08-071.jpg

I have a quest to take a picture of the bike in front of every lighthouse on the island. I'm not doing too well... there seem to be a million of 'em!

While Tristan busied himself with his camera...

http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff227/Design3D/2011/2011-08-076.jpg

trying to get the colours in the waves just right...

http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff227/Design3D/2011/2011-08-075.jpg

I parked the bike pointing directly at the Isle of Man (well... Ireland is in the way, but it IS a direct straight line!). This is significant, because my 'bucket list' includes the TT, and I missed it again this year! Mad2

http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff227/Design3D/2011/2011-08-0711.jpg

While we were poking about, a great big whale of some sort poked his fin out of the water about 200' offshore! Missed the picture of course... nobody will believe me because it is fairly rare in this cove...

http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff227/Design3D/2011/2011-08-0714.jpg

Disgusted with my reaction times on the shutter button, we headed home on the highway, and took the newly paved side road back home. There we some muted comments about this bike 'pulling' well after 70 mph... Good thing he is not aware of the speed available after 7,000 rpm! Although I don't think he'd squeal to SWMBO... Male solidarity and all...

http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff227/Design3D/2011/2011-07-299.jpg

Oh yeah... We forgot to get the milk...

Nice pics Bubba. I was up to Tullameen in July (on the RZ), and had a burger at the little store there. That's  one of those roads that wants a better suspension than the RZ has...but it's still a nice ride.
I've been ripping around the Okanagan backroads on the FZ (and commuting on it), but haven't had time to get too far out of the valley (usually hauling kids around in the van during the holidays, camping, etc).  I'm planning a quick blast over #6 next week, and probably on over to Cranbrook (via the ferry road) to pick up some  K.R.C. Burundi  coffee...I'm waiting impatiently for the call to pick up my new rear tire, and for my next days off to arrive.

Awesome pics Bubba. Looks like you had  a grand trip. Sorry to hear about the crash, but glad you and the bike are okay.

I really have to get up to that part of BC more often. Such lovely country and great roads.

Other than daily commuting, the only ride I have been on was to head down to Deception Pass State Park last weekend to loaf around a campfire and read for a couple of days.

Posting this from my motel room in Vernon, gonna head home (back over 6) just now.

Took a few (very few) pics yesterday.  I'll post them once I'm home and get them on the computer.

Nice riding weather, but I was expecting it to be a lot hotter, and had prepared for that, so I was pretty cold most of the ride.

I did make a point of riding Salmon River Road for the first time (I've driven it before, but it was a long time ago).  Nice ride, but it ain't Hwy 6...

Oh, and the meeting?  Meh...it was OK, but the outcome was not great...

It is supposed to be a gorgeous weekend in the Kootenays Chili Banana which is great, as we're meeting a friend from San Francisco in Radium Hot Springs tonight and then showing him our favourite roads in the Kootenays this weekend.

Isn't it amazing how much crap we have to pack to allow for weather variations?  If the weekend is as good as is forecast, 2/3 of what I've packed for the weekend won't make it out of the saddlebags.  However, if we need the heated gear or rain gear, we'll be VERY happy that we have them along!  Even in August you don't set out across the Rocky Mountains without...  Apparently it was -1oC in Banff at 7am Crazy

Bubba,

Rarely, in fact only twice have my bikes 'run like crap'. Once in Italy with the Multi and once in Wyoming on the SM. Running like crap = hesitant, low on power, almost as if it runs occasionally on one cylinder and won't idle. Cleared up the same day after filling up.

This sound familiar? Never occurred to me it would be water in the petrol. What were your symptoms? Any visual signs, like exhaust vapor?

Bill

The bike ran just OK when warm but the reall "tell" was starting from cold. Backfiring, spitting up through the carbs until at least 4 bars on the temp. This slightly improved the second day on its own, but until I put the water remover in it was still happening. After? A complete return to normal.  No water vapour from the exhaust could be seen or detected. When I cold started the first morning I thought maybe I had a serious valve issue the engine ran so poorly.

What I should have done is also unplugged the low octane plug to see if that allowed an improvement. But only thought of this later.

I've been going around the Prov of NB taking pictures of all the covered bridges.  Hopefully I'll be done this year and then I'll post a zillion pictures.  Bigsmile   I know I've posted some before but here's three that I took on Aug 1st.

This first picture is self explanatory if you read what it says on the bridge.

So, this past week, my Thursday/Friday commute included:

some nice scenery...

a ferry ride...

a few twisty roads...

and a chance meeting with an R1 rider who was heading to, of all things, a big Bee Cee Beemers Club rally in Nakusp...

I saw a bike I'd never seen before...an Aprilia 850 Mana...ridden by an 85-year-old who can no longer operate the clutch with his left hand (and whose friends complain they can't keep up)...

And, of course, I stopped by the bakery on the way home...

Oh, and the Cape Breton and new Brunswick pics are cool too. Love the 1282 foot long covered bridge. Way cool.

That's the Nakusp campground, right in town (interesingly, the Beemer rider with me was asking questions about the campground at Summit Lake, after following me down to New Denver...he really liked the look of that one...).

And yeah, the covered bridge pics are great.  Too bad it burned...hope it's salvageable!

Hardly changed at all! (Well, the other end)
And it's only been... well... uh... lets see, 2011 minus 1971 = Holey Crap! 40 years!!! How can that be???

http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff227/Design3D/2011/2011-08-275.jpg

Funny to think that back then a 450 was considered a pretty 'big' bike and you wouldn't think twice about riding across Canada on it. Now anything under 500 is too small to take to the corner shop! And what the Hell was I thinking with the loose water canteen??? Lol
