Now and then myself ...

These three near Tullameen BC ... hot day and the KTM had some really bad gas from a crap store. Water it turned out and it was not fun ...  ( OK DD .. not Burrito Gas ! ) ... but the KVR runs through this place and I had a ball on the paved roads. Otter Lake Provincial Park is a wonder too. Great campground ...

Actually this is near Oliver on the dirt that crashed me ... Keremeos/Cawston is just over those hills.  Lol Cool rear brake failed and I took a dust bath ...  Bigok not fun but no real damage. I crash well, the KTM not a mark !!

Photobucket

That is the Kettle Valley Rail bed down there along the river.

How long are you out for? Looks like a damn nice place AND paved roads. Rear brake failed? What happened?

You throw the bike on the ground and it still doesn't get dirty?! That's got to be the cleanest dual sport ever = I should be so lucky with a street bike.

More pics please....  Thumbsup

LOL ... Bill, the first pick is pre crash and the other two are after much time in a car wash. I even sprayed my gear as I was covered head to foot with fine, talc like dust. I was also anxious to see what damage lay under that dust on the bike and very happy to find little, apart from a broken, front brake lever and a few scratches. Lever broke at the designated break point so was not critical but already replaced it.

The rear brake failure?  Not sure at this point.  Headscratch I just bled the brake out last week and added motorex 5.1 fluid, which is supposed to help with its higher boiling point.  I suspect the pads are dragging for some reason and after some prolonged use it just faded to absolutely nothing. Heading down, I was left with only the front brake and tucked it on a slippery section. Truly the dustiest I have ever been. It was also a very hot day there, around 34C so who knows what was going on.

The bike was also running like crap and had to add a commercial water remover, which worked like a charm btw.

Home now. But would love to explore more of the area.

Yeah... I got out too last week for a bit. I used the 'We need some milk!' excuse...
There really WASN'T any milk in the house, and my corn flakes get soggy too fast in beer. SWMBO was suggesting that I move some rocks or something to finish off the last few hours of a perfectly lovely afternoon... but I pulled the first logical excuse I could think of, and Tristan (youngest brat) and I had helmets on before she could think of why we shouldn't...  Razz

Down the coast road we went to the far eastern tip at Main a Dieu. Twisty road (scene of very embarrassing crash 2 years ago  Embarassment ), mucho scenic harbour, no traffic...

http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff227/Design3D/2011/2011-08-077.jpg

Continued on the even MORE twisty shore road through to the Louisbourg lighthouse and stopped for more photo opportunities...

http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff227/Design3D/2011/2011-08-071.jpg

I have a quest to take a picture of the bike in front of every lighthouse on the island. I'm not doing too well... there seem to be a million of 'em!

While Tristan busied himself with his camera...

http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff227/Design3D/2011/2011-08-076.jpg

trying to get the colours in the waves just right...

http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff227/Design3D/2011/2011-08-075.jpg

I parked the bike pointing directly at the Isle of Man (well... Ireland is in the way, but it IS a direct straight line!). This is significant, because my 'bucket list' includes the TT, and I missed it again this year! Mad2

http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff227/Design3D/2011/2011-08-0711.jpg

While we were poking about, a great big whale of some sort poked his fin out of the water about 200' offshore! Missed the picture of course... nobody will believe me because it is fairly rare in this cove...

http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff227/Design3D/2011/2011-08-0714.jpg

Disgusted with my reaction times on the shutter button, we headed home on the highway, and took the newly paved side road back home. There we some muted comments about this bike 'pulling' well after 70 mph... Good thing he is not aware of the speed available after 7,000 rpm! Although I don't think he'd squeal to SWMBO... Male solidarity and all...

http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff227/Design3D/2011/2011-07-299.jpg

Oh yeah... We forgot to get the milk...

Nice pics Bubba. I was up to Tullameen in July (on the RZ), and had a burger at the little store there. That's  one of those roads that wants a better suspension than the RZ has...but it's still a nice ride.
I've been ripping around the Okanagan backroads on the FZ (and commuting on it), but haven't had time to get too far out of the valley (usually hauling kids around in the van during the holidays, camping, etc).  I'm planning a quick blast over #6 next week, and probably on over to Cranbrook (via the ferry road) to pick up some  K.R.C. Burundi  coffee...I'm waiting impatiently for the call to pick up my new rear tire, and for my next days off to arrive.

Awesome pics Bubba. Looks like you had  a grand trip. Sorry to hear about the crash, but glad you and the bike are okay.

I really have to get up to that part of BC more often. Such lovely country and great roads.

Other than daily commuting, the only ride I have been on was to head down to Deception Pass State Park last weekend to loaf around a campfire and read for a couple of days.

Posting this from my motel room in Vernon, gonna head home (back over 6) just now.

Took a few (very few) pics yesterday.  I'll post them once I'm home and get them on the computer.

Nice riding weather, but I was expecting it to be a lot hotter, and had prepared for that, so I was pretty cold most of the ride.

I did make a point of riding Salmon River Road for the first time (I've driven it before, but it was a long time ago).  Nice ride, but it ain't Hwy 6...

Oh, and the meeting?  Meh...it was OK, but the outcome was not great...

It is supposed to be a gorgeous weekend in the Kootenays Chili Banana which is great, as we're meeting a friend from San Francisco in Radium Hot Springs tonight and then showing him our favourite roads in the Kootenays this weekend.

Isn't it amazing how much crap we have to pack to allow for weather variations?  If the weekend is as good as is forecast, 2/3 of what I've packed for the weekend won't make it out of the saddlebags.  However, if we need the heated gear or rain gear, we'll be VERY happy that we have them along!  Even in August you don't set out across the Rocky Mountains without...  Apparently it was -1oC in Banff at 7am Crazy

Bubba,

Rarely, in fact only twice have my bikes 'run like crap'. Once in Italy with the Multi and once in Wyoming on the SM. Running like crap = hesitant, low on power, almost as if it runs occasionally on one cylinder and won't idle. Cleared up the same day after filling up.

This sound familiar? Never occurred to me it would be water in the petrol. What were your symptoms? Any visual signs, like exhaust vapor?

Bill

The bike ran just OK when warm but the reall "tell" was starting from cold. Backfiring, spitting up through the carbs until at least 4 bars on the temp. This slightly improved the second day on its own, but until I put the water remover in it was still happening. After? A complete return to normal.  No water vapour from the exhaust could be seen or detected. When I cold started the first morning I thought maybe I had a serious valve issue the engine ran so poorly.

What I should have done is also unplugged the low octane plug to see if that allowed an improvement. But only thought of this later.

I've been going around the Prov of NB taking pictures of all the covered bridges.  Hopefully I'll be done this year and then I'll post a zillion pictures.  Bigsmile   I know I've posted some before but here's three that I took on Aug 1st.

This first picture is self explanatory if you read what it says on the bridge.

So, this past week, my Thursday/Friday commute included:

some nice scenery...

a ferry ride...

a few twisty roads...

and a chance meeting with an R1 rider who was heading to, of all things, a big Bee Cee Beemers Club rally in Nakusp...

I saw a bike I'd never seen before...an Aprilia 850 Mana...ridden by an 85-year-old who can no longer operate the clutch with his left hand (and whose friends complain they can't keep up)...

And, of course, I stopped by the bakery on the way home...

That's the Nakusp campground, right in town (interesingly, the Beemer rider with me was asking questions about the campground at Summit Lake, after following me down to New Denver...he really liked the look of that one...).

And yeah, the covered bridge pics are great.  Too bad it burned...hope it's salvageable!

And it's only been... well... uh... lets see, 2011 minus 1971 = Holey Crap! 40 years!!! How can that be???

Funny to think that back then a 450 was considered a pretty 'big' bike and you wouldn't think twice about riding across Canada on it. Now anything under 500 is too small to take to the corner shop! And what the Hell was I thinking with the loose water canteen??? Lol

I was on that ferry Wednesday evening,  and being first off had a clear run into Nakusp. I was trying to make the New Denver Municipal campground before dark... didn't quite make it, but had fun trying  Wink Of course the highway into New Denver was all torn up, grooved and gravel...LOL. Hmmm...the last time I tried to get to that campground before dark on a bike the highway was torn up...what gives?
Wednesday morning I was supposed to start out in the early AM for a nice Kootenays ride, but my new tire that was installed Tuesday afternoon (all of 6 km on it) was flat right off the bat (I didn't notice it for a km).    I eventually ot it to the local bike shop where it was installed, and he went over it with soap and water...no leaks- seems like it was a completely random event- maybe due to having to use a ratchet strap twice before the bead would seat. So... I got underway late, then immediately hit the front of the line waiting for the highway to open at Yellow Lake...so I turned around to avoid the twenty minute wait, and took Green Mountain Road. About a third of the way through I met the motorcycle cop- the only police vehicle I met in 1200km of riding. Luckily for me, I was stuck behind a slow car at that point.
I checked out a couple of bike shops in Kelowna, rode to Lumby, then decided I wanted to go to  Enderby. Of course I did not have a map or GPS..lol...so I tried the Mabel Lake road, but finally turned around, a few kilometers after it turned to dirt. I think there must be two different roads...or maybe the logging road goes through...guess I will have to check a map for next time. That was my first time on that road, and it was fun, especially both ways. The only traffic was farm equipment.
I visited a friend in Enderby, and burned up a lot of my daylight, so after backtracking to Lumby, hustled butt over #6. Traffic was minimal, and I really Hustled! to Nakusp. The town was full of motorcyclists, there for the Horizon's Unlimited Western Canada meetup.
I got a campsite in New Denver...wow that campground is expensive this year : $22+ for a bike and tiny tent, plus a bear alert just to liven things up- so I had to eat my snacks/breakfast before bed time!
Thursday morning I had 31A *almost* all to myself, and enjoyed it properly, then had a bank card failure in Kaslo (and the ATM was down), so having spent my cash on campsite and junk food, boogied on in to Nelson to get more cash. The bank card was fine in Nelson... and after spending another few hours with a good friend, I grabbed lunch, then beelined it to Salmo for a white chocolate mochaccino at the Dragonfly Cafe; then on to Barrett's Honda in Fruitvale, since I haven't been able to catch him open for a couple years now; through Trail and Rossland, and back home on #3. I didn't get over to the East Kootenays like I had hoped, and I missed the Kootenay Bay ferry road since I was way behind schedule to get home, but all in all it was a nice way to spend the better part of 2 days. No schedule, no set plans- just a tent, sleeping bag and pad, and my toothbrush...LOL. Next time I'm using my entire four days off.
Pics are still in the film camera, since the digital broke (another one down...I seem to be hard on electronics).

Sounds like a fun coupla days.

I've driven the road from Enderby (actually, Ashton Creek) to Lumby.  It is not the Mabel Lake road...and it is gravel almost the whole distance.  I can't recall what it's called just now.

Yeah, the road's all torn up between Nakusp and New Denver.  Paving, I guess...at least it should be better when they're done.

Glad to hear someone else knows about the Dragonfly.  I've taken a few people there, most have seen it but never stopped in.

Buddy of mine just bought some Alpinestar boots from Barretts--Gord brought the in for him, apparently for less than New Enough had them listed...hmmm...I sure never got that kind of service from those guys.

Oh, and I'll have to check out the "ferry pictures" thread--I wasn't aware there was such a beast!  There are several ferries in this area, so I have a number of pics...

Had a great weekend.  Speaking of camping and the Nakusp area.  mrs zanetti and I went camping at Burton Historical Campground in Burton BC. It is midway between the Needles ferry and Nakusp. If you blink, you would miss it. We had one of the nicest campsites I have ever had, anywhere! Such a great evening and amazing view as we pitched our tent right on Arrow Lake.  Inlove  Will definitely stay there again.  Lake is full of fish too !

mrs z and Murphy enjoy the Bucolic scenery of Arrow Lake

Got woken up by a knock on Sunday morning as alphabet man wanted some company on his ride home to the East Koots. No pics but a splendid ride to New Denver - Kaslo - Creston where we parted company.  Sorry, no pics - just some focused riding and taking in the scenery. Beautiful day !  Bigok

Still nice and warm here ( 31C right now)  so heading out after work for a ride today. This is my last week on the bike this year and am hanging it up early this year so as to save $ for a family vacation    ... I am sure I will appreciate a couple of weeks of sun this winter. But man oh man, the weather out there right now just screams ROAD TRIP !!!

It's been a bad year for putting on miles.  Wandered around Wisconsin for a week in the rain in June.  Ran up to Ely Minnesota before the fire messed up that area.  Rode to work today.  +2 degrees C when I left home!  Stupid fall already....

Checking back in to ST.N -- was a member from right around 2002-3 -- but haven't been as active on the forum (kids, between bikes etc.)

Had an SV1000S from last year till this -- and traded the SV for this mid-August.

Just back.. 16 days, 2 Provinces, 7 states, over 8000 kms.

Biggest surprise. Highway 93 along the Salmon river in Idaho.
Most excitement. Being the highest point for 20 miles during a severe (worst rain I've ever seen in my 59 years) thunderstorm in the desert with tornado warnings and flash flood warnings popping up on the Garmin.
Biggest disappointment. The lack of a remote control for my GOPRO.
Biggest "Oh Wow"...... Arches Nat Park or Zion.... or maybe Bryce.

Lol Be careful what you ask for. I usually don't do ride reports, but I'm thinking of writing this one up.

Teaser #1. The light in Bryce canyon was delicious for lack of a better word.

Teaser #2. Colorado National Monument is one of my favorite scenic rides bar none.

Got in a quick run down the 1A today. Perfect road and pace for the Triumph. Great colours and minimal tourists.

And a run down to the Vermillion Lakes near Banff on the way back to Canmore.

Beautiful weather for the Rockies this time of year.

Couple of hours on the Guzzi just scooting around the valley before I tucked it away in the basement on Friday,  then a fun ride on the KTM today some dirt and some pavement, what a great machine never a dull moment,  but mostly hiking and hunting this time of year, well mostly hiking  Lol

Bubbas been way to quit lately so my buddy Ralph and I headed over to Castlegar  via Gray Creek Pass to see what's up.

Sadly we never got there, with about a foot of snow at top and Ralph with worn out Scorpions ( which are shit even new) it wasn't gonna happen, Its time to hang up the boots for another season. Another time Jim  Thumbsup

Bigok Not too surprising for Grey Creek Pass this time of year.  One Thanksgiving in the UniMoG we're pretty sure we were the last vehicle over that pass for the year.  Diffs fully locked, with snow falling, in the dark, we barely crept to the top - four wheels spinning in a few places.

Yeah, but this Thanksgiving was kinda fun, eh?  Turkey with fixin's and pumpkin pie, and a backroad ride even!  (we just won't mention my little, uh, ditch incident... Wink )

Rode the Buell into town yesterday, to warm it up for the end-of-season oil change.  Might take it out for one last ride today.  I'll be doing the same with the XT pretty soon, too.

I think it was close to this date that we rode up to that lovely little lake and I got to taste some snow over Gray Creek Pass?

Truly missing the October aspect of riding this year as there have been some amazing days. This afternoon should be around 17c here with glorious sun. It would have been great to get out ... but.  I will have to content myself by sitting in the rocking chair, on the porch and soaking up some rays.

Yes, Chickee's old XT225 has a new home.  Plan is for my wife to ride it next summer...until then, I'll be using it to explore some of the local backroads (hopefully, no more local backroad ditches...I blame unfamiliarity and overexuberance...thankfully, there were no paparazzi on hand...).

I was thinking of dropping by, but I needed to get some hardware for a house project I'm working on and get back at it.  The XT makes a fine little commuter...already thinking of a new "dirt" helmet...

Never mind the pass, there was a dusting of snow on our deck this morning.

Which is fine...historically, snow usually starts here by early November, so late October is normal...unlike a few years ago when we didn't see snow before mid-December, that was weird!

I went for a ride in Nova Scotia Saturday with five other guys who were all riding Honda ST's.  Three ST1300 and two ST1100 EEK! but guess who was leading?  Moi on my BMW.   Lol

Sorry, no pictures.

I always tell people to visit in the fall! Best weather here for riding is late September, early October. Mind you, this is a little nicer than usual, eh??

Took a beautiful 3 day meander to Nashville this weekend. A little cool out but a beautiful fall through Appalachia. Going to fly home and return for a southern ride mid-winter and again for a spring return via Deal's Gap.

After my western sojourn I was little down on eastern riding. I am back on board now.

Sorry no photos

Bubba, which pass is that at? *SIGH* Fall and Winter seem to come so soon, and last sooooo long.

I was speaking with one of our customers in Denver today. Yesterday it was 80 F in Denver, today it was 40, and they are projecting below freezing for the rest of the week with up to 10 inches of snow.

That's Kootenay Pass (Salmo-Creston).  Highest paved road in Canada, AFAIK (may be 2nd highest, after Highwood Pass in Alberta).

BTW, I can't believe someone in Vancouver is bemoaning the length of winter...that's the only place I ever lived I could ride a motorcycle year round...  (mind you, I willingly moved out of the Lower Mainland to snow country--and no regrets!).

Did a run from Edmonton to Brazeau last weekend, and hoping to get out again this weekend. Although I do have to admit the stabil has been bought and the battery tender has been brought up from it's summer resting spot in the basement. Sad

The FJR is still ready for impromptu rides. At least until they forecast for the first major snowfall of the year. Usually mid-Nov.

I put the little CBR250 away though last Sat. No wind protection (at least compared to the FJR), no plug in's for my heated gear, no heated grips. I'm tough. Not stupid.

Later after dropping off the CBR I took the FJR out for a blast. 4C and sunny. I was on the highway doing about 15 over when some guy on a Fat Boy passes me like I'm going backward. Beanie, skull mask, chaps, and this leather jacket. No gloves. Everytime he hit a bump, you could see, their was no 'flex' in him. That man was cock stiff.

I stopped for a coffee and mister Fat Boy was sitting there with some friends. Hands firmly wrapped around his XLarge Tims.

"Where did you park your skidoo?" - referencing my riding gear and heated liner.

I passed him my phone "Here, use this to call somebody with a trailer to get your bike home".

Dumbass.

I drove through a snow squall yesterday and while the forcast looks good till Monday, after that we are in a steep decline.

I promise the wife that if she lets me ride all weekend, then maybe I will clean out my garage next weekend and put the FJR away, and maybe get started on the reno work I promised...... maybe.

Yeah, but winter also means we are stuck here, when it comes to two wheels. No long, rambling multi-day rides in the mountains for a while now.

Shifting the clocks back is always the sign that the 'end' is near... I got an early morning ride in today, but had to scrape off the frost at dawn!

http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff227/Design3D/2011/Novembercommute-1.jpg

The ride along the coast was a little 'chilly' (temperature +3!), but no wind and bright sunshine seemed to make it OK.

http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff227/Design3D/2011/NovemberdawnMiraBay.jpg

I love riding along with myself when the sun is so low... it gets lonely out there sometimes, you know?

http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff227/Design3D/2011/Novemberdawnshadows.jpg

That kind of temperature always keeps you on your toes though, wood decks on bridges turn white, and that ain't paint!!

http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff227/Design3D/2011/Novemberridefrostonbridge.jpg

After negotiating the bridge (tip-toe speed), I got to chase my friend heading west for a few more miles...

http://i241.photobucket.com/albums/ff227/Design3D/2011/NovemberShadows.jpg

That's probably it though, other than a short blast here or there at mid-day... This kind of ride will have to wait for spring... Sad

Gave the ol' snowblower it's first workout of the year yesterday.  Heavy snowfall warning in effect again today...

I did get in a few late season rides.  Here's a pic taken from one of them (taken before the snow fell):

Took a ride just last weekend; snow was on the ground, and on my driveway, but the road was just wet (well, a bit muddy at my place).  Rode down to the local store for a few items--and got that "Oh my, are you riding your motorcycle?" question from the cashier.  Ended up, she and I trooped to the window so she could see my bike (the XT)--gotta love living in a small community!  That trip, though, I topped off the tank, added the Stabil, and ran the carb dry when I got home...I think it may be parked for the winter now (the roads here are treacherous now, 3 accidents just yesterday, riding is not recommended in these conditions!).

Clap  I'm very happy that you & the XT have been enjoying some rides together.  That little bike has spent WAY too much of its life sitting still.

-15'C & snowing here this morning ...sigh...
