Hello all,

I recently (like, this past Sunday ) picked up a 1998 Trophy 1200 with 48.5K miles on the clock.
I rode the bike 180 miles home.  No issues.

Next week, I'm taking the wife on a 3 day ride; I expect to travel ~1000 miles in those 3 days.

So, the general question is vague: Anything beyond a very stern eye around the bike?

The more specific question:

Nothing obvious seems to be wrong with the bike... but, I had the following issue.
Rode the bike into work yesterday.  Went to take it out for lunch, and ( as per past owners instructions ), I used about 1/3 choke, gave 1/2 twist on the throttle, then thumbed the starter.

And it went downhill from that.

I *suspect* I flooded it shortly after all the fiddling with choke and gas I gave it.
After a few minutes of letting it sit, I repeated with no go.

The motor would turn and turn and turn, but would not lite up.

After a few more minutes of letting her sit, I finally used no choke / no "1/2 twist of throttle" -- I just thumbed the starter... and she fired.

So, this morning, when I started her, I used no choke and no gas.  She started up... and after starting, I gave her a little choke.  That was it.

Perhaps I need to tune my starting procedure.

Perhaps when I had the issue yesterday at lunch, she was still "warm enough" that the additional choke and twist of gas was my issue.

I'm riding her into work each day, and will verify I have no other starting issues.  Don't need to be 500 miles from home.

On my six carb CBXs I use the choke only on cold startups so it won't flood and get the plugs wet.  If I were you I'd swap the plugs, lube everything I could (cables etc) and an O&F change never hurt anything and check the tire psi and condition and ride it!

And just in case...I'd never ride anywhere w/o the best towing service available, RVRoadhelp.

Mike,

Where are you located..?? I ask because I am curious to see what type of weather you have when starting the bike. My '92 885 motor would never start from cold without choke, but the choke could be removed pretty quickly once the engine was warm. The 1200 may be a different beast form the 885, but I am wondering if starting from cold without choke is normal; i.e. hoping you bike is not running rich.

What sort of mpg are you getting..?? It sounds like the bike is running pretty good, so please don't read too much into my email. Just making sure your bike is as optimal as it can be.

I had the same issue with my new 1996 Trophy, I used to much choke the first time I started it. I use very little now and it runs like a top. My wife and I are off to a little road trip this weekend as well. Should put 1000 miles on by Sunday. here is a picture of my new bike, will have more soon.

I'm located in Northern California / San Jose area.  Temps in the morning are 55'F-ish and at noon 70'F-ish.

My new routine is to start it with no choke / no "twist of the throttle".
It always starts up... when dead cold, I might add a teeny bit of choke... but ( as mentioned above ) I'm able to turn it off quickly.

I just did a quick 120 mile ride up to California Sport Touring to pick up a GIVI E250 base plate to fit my 46l Givi luggage to the bike for our upcoming trip.

Noticed a bit of an oil leak around the front sprocket cover... output shaft?  Definitely not chain lube.  Doesn't look too bad.

Bike runs like a champ.

My '02 1200 used full choke, no throttle to start, then adjust the choke for slightly fast idle for a minute or so then choke off and away you go. The Trophy's are excellent bikes, you can't go wrong with one. I'd make REALLY sure it's not chain lube in the output shaft area. Chain lube builds up in there and dribbles out so it looks like it's a seal.
I had around 48k on mine before it got clipped by an errant motorist with no problems other than wear and tear items like tires, brakes and chain/sprockets. One thing to be mindful of is the vent hose under the tank. If you remove and install the tank it's easy to pinch the vent so take a second to be sure it's right. Other than that it was an excellent bike and one I miss quite a bit.

The "choke" is not really a choke on your bike... it's an "Enrichener". When engaged it add more fuel instead of restricting air intake like a conventional choke... so when you use it AND add throttle your pushing a lot of raw fuel into the chamber.
When cold add choke to taste... but no throttle.

If taking care of it's stone axe reliable and a fun runnin' scoot

Your Trophy looks like it just came out of the showroom.  Hard to believe it has 48k miles.  Excellent find.   Thumbsup

+1 dont touch the throttle on start up.
+1 on the chain lube
+1 on the fuel line pinch.  Although I never had a problem on my 2002 1200

there is an excellent Trophy group on Yahoo.
