All righty then....

I've got a good reason to take a trip from Jacksonville, Florida to San Diego and back next March. That's about 5000 miles round trip. I've never done any long distance riding per se, just 100-200 miles trips around the house here. My trusty steed is a 2000 929RR that has just shy of 36k miles on it. She's a solid machine but a tad hard on the butt, feet, and wrists after a time (about 100 miles at a stretch is all I can take before getting off). I'm 5'8", 160 so I fit it just right.

I've been contemplating getting a different bike, but I can't figure out which I'd be happy with. This one does my commuting that I spend 99% of the time doing so well that I haven't had a drive outside of this to look at others. Also, it's probably going to be a lot cheaper to just do a few tweaks to this one (as it's paid for) versus going in on a different one. Granted, there's a few FJR1300's for sale around here that are looking mighty tempting but I'm just not sure how well I'd like one of those all the time. I've also contemplated a ZX-14 or a Hayabusa but finding one that hasn't been molested is hard to do.

So what I'm figuring here is trying to find a different set of clip-ons, a better seat, and a decent set of bags, or large tail bag and a medium tank bag. Bars and seats are expensive. Not out of reach, but expensive enough that I only want to buy them once and have them work.

I'll be packing fairly light. I plan on mailing what I need out to the hotel in San Diego and then mailing it back. So about all I'll need to pack with me is stuff for a 5 day trip or so each way.

Any and all tips, suggestions, and advice on clothing, luggage, bars, seats, and tools are appreciated. I'm just looking to see if anyone has input on either what to get or at least, what NOT to get. Also, anything that I'm not thinking about that I should be is welcome too.

Well, if you can swing buying a more comfy sport tourer, like the FJR that you mentioned, you don't have to keep it forever, right? Sell it after the trip.   Smile

Heli-Bars (or VFR bars if they fit), Bead-Rider seat cover, Buell pegs (1" drop), and a double bubble screen

Never freaking mind. I'm hopeless.

I just went and picked up a 2008 VFR with 5200 miles on it for $5k. I gotta find some bags for it but it should fit the bill.  Smile

I've looked already.  Lol  I don't use half the power that the 929 has on a regular basis anyway so I don't think I'll miss it too much.

I've been over to VFR'd for about a day now based off of links on this forum. I'm still dealing with buyers remorse at the moment, so I've got to stew on it until I get past it.
