I've got a line on a 1999 R1100SA ABS w 43k miles that I'm looking at. The guy wants 5700 for it but will wiggle down to 5500. KBB shows retail at 5480.

The plus side for the bike:

- all maintenance records since new
- hasn't been molested
- has a few factory upgrades from that year (tail light, head light)
- has all the luggage, toolkit, liners, etc.
- just had a complete going through from top to bottom, front to back from BMW in April. All fluids, new tires, brakes, battery, valves set/checked, new fuel pump, etc.
- has a couple of extras, windscreen, throttle meister.

Down side:

- Price
- miles

I'm not sure how often or involved the maintenance on these are. I'm a DIY guy through and through and I can't imagine it being that difficult. Parts availability and cost is a concern, though I hear that they're quite reliable and don't require much in the way of maintenance.

Are BMW's a PITA to maintain like Duc's are? I would probably keep this one for a couple of years/20k miles or so.

I think 5500 is still too much even considering that the dealer has just completely went through it. I'm thinking more along the lines of 5000. I don't want to insult the guy, but I'm not looking to get taken either. Any input?

Are the EOE sure that's a 1999?

Colors for 1999 were black, sort of a salmon red and mandarin (yellow-orange).  If I remember correctly.   Headscratch

JOOC, what happened to the deal?

The valves are way, way simpler to adjust than on a Duc.

Those R1100S's sure are pretty.  I'd love to own one of those, or its next-of-kin the R1200S.  Drool :leghump:

Just make sure you can live with the surging.  BMW really didn't start getting a handle on it until the dual plug 2004's.  I had an early '95 GS and a later RS and both surged.  Believe me, you may think you can live with it but it will drive you crazy.

Surging was/is extremely rare on the S model. The extra HP of the S was primarily achieved thru changes in the exhaust and intake systems. Apparently, it also eliminated pretty much all the surging found in the other models. There is pretty much no mention of it, ever, over on Pelican Parts.

Yeah, I had a 2001 R11S (not dual plug heads) and it didn't surge at all.   Shrug
