OK, I've rented a GL1800 before, on a visit to Vegas.  Yes, it's a lumbering barge about town.  But it's actually very much like riding a motorcycle out on the backroads - it went around curves and stuff by countersteering!  And its accelerated rather well.

I can't say I'd never own one; there may come a time that I walk around in black socks and tennis shoes and wear a fanny pack as well.  When you get to a point in life where you no longer care about how you look and just want to be comfortable, therein lies the Wing.

I find the bike amusing period. Really, at this point, get a convertable.

I have bad visions of some rider Fing around with all those damn buttons on this oversized beast and then plowing through some pedestrians or something trying to figure out which of the 100 or so dodads they should be pushing to turn up the stereo...

Yeah, what is wrong with those numbers?

When I took one for a test spin, it trucked right along. Once you got it out of first gear, which is only good for parking lots, it bombed right along. Now we didn't do 1/4 mile runs or take it up to 180kph+ but my old V-Strom would do that speed in 4th gear.

100+ ft/lbs of torque gets you moving in a hurry....and very smoothly too.

I'm 32 and I would love to have a Wing. It holds the same attraction as old man cars like the Detroit land barges of the 70's and 80's. Or a Buick Roadmaster. A 4300 pound vehicle with an LS1 and air suspension makes for an awesome cruiser.

I have ridden the new 2012 GL1800 and it can hustle very well.  I'm very surprised it outperformed the BMW.

But i don't think that exit speed sounds right either.  My Street Triple achieves about that same speed at around a second quicker.  The Goldwing quarter mile speed should be 10-15mph less from other tests I've read.

It's an 11 Mph difference? Who knows what factors came into play, such as rider, better aerodynamics etc. I do not find it that shocking. You're just jealous it traps faster than your Vespa.

A 940lb bike with 95 hp is not going to go 120 in the 1/4

Its not all about peak hp. And trap speeds can vary greatly while elapsed time can be within a few tenths of a second.

Look at this review from your favorite magazine comparing the Kawasaki Vulcan 2000 (97hp /800 lbs). to the V-Rod and VTX.

Quote
Kawasaki says the Vulcan will "accelerate harder in any one of its five gears than any other V-twin cruiser on the market." Hmmm. Yes, it makes more torque on our impartial rear-wheel dyno (121.4 foot pounds at 3250 rpm) than any other bike we've tested, V-twin or not. But because of its low-revving nature, it makes just 96.8 rear-wheel horsepower at its 5000-rpm peak. And because it's so hard to run it that fast because of the need to upshift 250 revs later, we usually found ourselves working around 3000 rpm. How much power does it make at 3000 rpm? Approximately 70 horsepower--about as much as a good-running Suzuki SV650 at its peak. Add the Vulcan's massive, uh, mass--its wet weight is 820 pounds--and you've got a pretty routine number of Clydesdales pulling a very large beer wagon.

A Harley-Davison V-Rod, with just 1130cc of displacement, shreds it in the quarter-mile: the V-Rod running 11.31 seconds at 114.95 mph vs. the Vulcan's 12.43-second, 104.2-mph performance. The V-Rod also beats it in a top-gear roll-on from 60 to 80 mph, taking 4.05 seconds vs. the Vulcan's 4.10 seconds. Even Honda's VTX beats the Vulcan in the quarter-mile, at 12.21 seconds and 107.48 mph--and hangs right with it in the top-gear 60--80 roll-on, at 4.12 seconds, just 0.02 seconds behind.

And if you really want to put the size-is-all-that-matters concept into perspective, consider this: It's no cruiser, but the aforementioned SV650, a twin with less than a third of the Vulcan's displacement, runs just about even in the quarter-mile, 12.53 seconds at 104.76 mph.

Yes, but trap speed *should* align very consistently with peak HP, regardless of ET.  And it doesn't here, in comparison with the BMW.  One of those looks wrong.

Motorcycle-usa trapped their 2012 Wing at 105mph.
Which makes sense seeing it is weaker than the 2005 version which trapped 109

Most specs list the mid 12s as the ET but that trap speed is a little off. Either way its doesn't matter, for what it is that monster is pretty darn fast.

I have ridden the new 2012 GL1800 and it can hustle very well.  I'm very surprised it outperformed the BMW.

If you read the article, you can see where they state the BMW traction control system was hampering hard launches. That would account for the GW beating the BMW in the 1/4.

All that info aside, I have a couple friends with GWs and for a big touring rig they get along quite well in the twisties.  Some like to knock the GWs, but they are the pinicale (maybe eclipsed by the BMW) touring machine.  They are designed to eat up the miles in comfort.  Just like a Harley is designed.............oh wait bad example!

Me, I would like to have one, but not as a primary bike. I would like it for what it is made for.  Touring in comfort.  Some say get a cage at this point, the GW is still a bike and riding (when possible)  is ALWAYS better than caging.  Given the option I would rather tour on a scooter than cage it.  How long would a cross country trip take on a Zuma 50? Cool

In the continuing saga of Motorcyclist Magazine douchebaggery...

Performance stats for the Honda Goldwing:

http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/roadtests/122_1110_bmw_k1600gtl_vs_honda_gl1800_gold_wing/tech_specifications.html

Quote
Corrected 1/4-mile: 12.12 sec. @ 120.23 mph

The Wing traps at 120.23mph?!!!

 Lol

You are quoting a 'corrected' statistic.  Do you know how Motorcyclist corrects their times/speeds?

Someone should check how they "correct" the numbers.  I read somewhere in the magazine in the last few months an explanation of how they corrected the numbers on the quarter mile and while I can't remember what it said, I do remember thinking it was a bit out there.

The correction is different for each bike. In this case, they adjust the numbers after determining how much drag is caused by the Member's Only jackets and velcro® shoes worn by 'Wing riders.

"why the "Wing" hate?  Headscratch

Somebody wanna explain STN to him? I don't have the energy  Sad

I'll give it a shot. To fully appreciate STN'r criticism, we have to use examples. I'm told in California prisons gang leaders use a hat to put in pieces of paper with the names of rivals and fellow members who are due for punishment and retribution. Names are pulled from the hat and the sentence is assigned based on the mood of the leader. We have the same system here in the verbal sense. No real hat of course, but the poster can choose from categories such as topic, person, place, or thing. In this case the poster went with an on and off again favorite of Motorcycle Mag with Wing as the "thing". As STN dog-piles go, this was a grade school girl pillow fight. Couple of weeks ago it was Cops (always a favorite), and other long standing oldies but goodies include HD, HD riders, Squids, Soccer Moms in MiniVans or SUV's, and virtually anyone who owns or rides or uses anything different from the OP.

Let's have a hypothetical post to expand the idea. Subject: All cops are asshats!
Message: "Last week I got written up for 50 over in a school zone and for doing a Stoppie that ended 6 inches from the crossing guard who was walking a bunch of 1st graders through the crosswalk. The brats were screaming, the crossing guard cussing, and the nazi cop wouldn't listen to reason. Threatened to impound my bike. What an asshat."

Analysis: The OP got a couple of targets right off the bat, cop and whiny public for persons, school (or construction) zone for place, but he left out topic and thing.

Follow up Post: "Ya, I was picking my kid up at that school once and watched a Harley rider with his stereo blaring and pipes farting, dressed like one of the Village People with his legs splayed on the highway pegs like he was at a gang bang in a gay bathhouse roar right past that cop and he didn't do nothing. Pussy."

Analysis: This more experienced STN'r skillfully added Harley's, Harley riders and their dress, the ever favorite Village People comparison with a gay sex analogy, and re-insulted the cop. Not bad.

You get the idea. Please note that STN has a number of absolute Zen Masters at the art of insult who could have easily easily expounded on all the above and still deftly weave in a BMW final drive failure, random praise for the FJR, and pose the question "do you carry a loaded Glock when speeding through a school zone like I do?"

Admittedly, the quality and content of insult and criticism here at STN has fallen off somewhat lately. I attribute that to the transition from Summer to Fall riding season and the poor economy. However, I have deep faith in my fellow STN brothers and sisters, and as the upcoming Winter cages the tigers I fully expect to see copious high quality blood on the verbal killing floor.

Tad are you saying the 2012 Goldwing is not capable of the time or the speed or both?

The 2012 Wing has manipulated time, and therefore acceleration, which was recorded as increased speed.  It has done this by implementation of mass large enough to slow the Earth's rotational speed thereby causing a localized space-time disruption.  Since the Wing slowed the Earth, it appears faster to those not in the localized space-time disruption. Hence the seemingly unbelievable time and speed values.

I'm late the party (as usual...  Rolleyes), but Motorcycle Consumer News tested the Goldwing in their September issue and came up with 12.7 seconds at 100.89 mph.

The K1600GTL tested a full second faster, btw....

Why all the drama over numbers?  Headscratch

This morning I lit my pipe with a fine, mild tobacco and rode my airhead RS into work in the cool, fall air. On arriving, I tapped out the tobacco and went in to review charts, look at the stock market while enjoying a nice cup of joe.

Preliminary studies show quarter mile times are inversely related to penis size...

I'd still ride the new wing. I'd still have fun on it. I'd still lean the shit out of it and use that throttle. I'd still be on a bike. I'd still be smiling like a fool when I arrived. And I'd still ride circles around people on way better bikes who don't understand how to use 'em.

The correction is different for each bike. In this case, they adjust the numbers after determining how much drag is caused by the Member's Only jackets and velcro® shoes worn by 'Wing riders.

Weird, I thought they also corrected for the stuffed animal bungeed onto the luggage rack.

Bikes have dashboards?

I shoud re-state that.

Goldwings, FJRs, VFRs...
Posted on: September 16, 2011, 03:18:57 PM

No

Weird, seeing that your CBR1100XX has one.
It is to the left of the speedo, under the high beam and turn signal lights.
On the dashboard.

My Italian bike has the perfect side stand. It stays down until you start the bike, then, WHAM! It snaps up. Only the superior engineering of a Guzzi could do that.

I`m surprised the car tire thing on the Goldwing has not been mentioned yet . I`ve heard handling actually improves with it .

To extend the love for the new GW's, here are some pics of my dad's from a trip we did this summer.  Nevermind the Triumph that is in the way on some of the pics.

I will guarantee you he was more comfy on that big Wing than you on the Strip.

I love the white Wing.

I tell you what I've never ridden one but I sat on an '07, that thing felt lighter and more balanced than my C10 anyday. I'm sure it's just the low C O G.
I could flatfoot that bike no problem with a little bend in my knees to boot.

Damn pretty bike, just too many fucking gizmos and buttons.

While the Wing is more PLUSH generally - like a mobile sofa - it has annoying wind buffeting to me, regardless of screen height.  And it generally takes more effort to manhandle around at low speeds (thank god for the electric reverse).  Plus while it's easy to corner, it's also quick to drag parts.

Does all that weight and bike limitations make ME more comfortable riding it - NO.   Riding his Wings drives me batty after awhile.  I was more comfortable on my Striple, and he was more comfortable on his Wing - thank you very much!

The Q you ask reveals your ignorance of both religion, history, literature, and Jamie Elvidge. I spoke to her on May 21 this year at the Exxon at the TN end of the Cherohala. She was filling up the GW and the GTL was at the other pump. They were finishing up the comparison of the two bikes and said might be surprised when I read it. The next day she lit out for CA to return home. During that time you banged out 13 posts on this forum and did precious little riding.

Does that clear things up for you? You will have to Google the how many angels on a pinhead thing for yourself.

Yo Big D. Central Cali? Where abouts? I was stationed at Vandyland and lived in both Lompoc and Santa Maria.

Some really fantastic riding out there. I miss the vineyards, canyon roads and especially the stretch between Lompoc and Santa Barbara behind the mountains
down through the Santa Ynez valley.

You shoulda asked her how they got the Wing to break the 1/4 mile at 120mph.

And if she's still bitter at bar sluts (her words) throwing themselves at her ex.
