Packs of motorcycles swarming St. Louis area highways

Drivers have reported huge packs of motorcycles swarming the highways around St. Louis, with the bikers pulling stunts, making hand gestures and forcing cars off the roadway.

There has been no official word yet from the state highway patrol or other public safety officials.

The reports started coming in around 2 p.m. from various spots on I-270 and I-70, most recently in the north St. Louis county area. Some claimed to see as many as 800 to 1,000 motorcycles in a pack.

There has been at least one major accident, which resulted in serious injuries and forced the closure of I-270 near New Halls Ferry Road. The injured were flown to an area hospital, according to the state highway patrol. No further details are known at this time.

Brian Johnson of St. Louis said he was heading on I-170 north to Lambert International Airport with his wife when he saw the pack of motorcycles on the other side of the highway.

"There was a good half mile stretch where it was 20 bikes wide the whole highway," he said. "It was hundreds after hundreds after hundreds of bikes."

Johnson said the bikers were not your typical Harley Davidson types; most were wearing racing suits and riding speed bikes like you would see in stunt shows.

He said the first group of bikers were pumping their fists; the second group created a ringlike formation and had bikers riding down the middle doing wheelies.

Johnson said cars were forced over to the shoulder of the road and trying to get off. There were also traffic tie-ups on his side of the highway as drivers slowed to gawk at the spectacle.

"When they were out around the other cars it was dangerous," he said. "When they took over the entire highway it was like being in a motorcycle show."

It's a four lane (each direction) highway, right? Obviously, this guy cannot count. I wouldn't put much faith in any of his numbers. I'm sure there was a pack, but you'd think they could have found a better witness. It's funny that all these motorists were "forced off the highway" by 400 lb sport bikes, yet no one interviewed for the article was affected by the bikes.

One of the guys I ride with up here goes every year.  He's a he'll of a good guy,  and says it's a lot of fun.  Basically,  the police more or less block areas off and let the stunt riders go bonkers,  within reason.

I hit part of it a few years ago by accident,  and had a riot.  How often do you legally get to ride like a hooligan on the highway? Even some of the Patrol guys were thrashing their bikes.  Nothing like a good burnout on a state funded tire!

My wife (who rides) was super PO'd weekend before last because the police had closed a ton of streets for some ride, and she literally couldn't get to work.  She was worried about being early by half an hour, and then winds up sitting in traffic past start time.  Really?  The entire city needs to stop so weak minded lemmings can feel like part of a group?  So she was PO'd, and I don't like it when there's sand in my vagina.  Clear?

 I also think the numbers on the freeway, causing problems, are grossly over estimated.

The biggest call in ratio was probably from the I270 loop, I70, I44, I55, and I64, where these numbskulls do block off every bloody lane of an interstate, sometimes up to 5 lanes.  So one or 3 of them can jerk-off in public, oh, sorry, show off their mad wheeelieee skilz   on the way too ROC.  Yes, I saw it happening that day.  There's no need for the police to "embrace" this kind or jackass-ary.  The shmucks who do that kind of crap won't care to do anything in a controlled environment because it's not "realz".  God save us from these individualists

I happened to be riding south 55 and saw a group of at least 50 or so heading north taking up multiple lanes. My first thought was "this isn't good, someones going to die." I didn't see anyone doing anything extremely stupid though.
I'm not sure what the point of it all was. It makes us all look bad though.

5 bucks says more people have died , got injured during Iron Butt and other endurance rallies then during those goofy rides .
