I typically go for BMW sans plastic body work but I do like this vintage RT.  Stealer wants $8K with the usual line; will consider reasonable offers.  Of course the same dealer has a non ABS '07 ST1300 running slicks going for $10K  EEK! so the crack pipe is loaded.  Anyway Cycletrader examples with 40-50K miles are listed for $5-$7K.  So maybe they're not too far out of line but I'm thinking reasonable is closer to $6000 to $6500.  Thoughts?

If that's the single plug head version (which I think it is) they have lean surge issues in stock form. With a little tweaking of the ECU they run much better. Other than that it's a great bike. Very nimble for it's size/weight.

$8K seems a bit high for an '02.  You might want to take a look in the IBMWR oilheads section there is a '04 currently listed at $4500.  You might also want to consider some of the low mileage 1100s being offered there.  That's where I found my 2000 RT last fall and couldn't be happier.

I've been saving my pennies and looking for a good R1100RT or 1150RT also.
I like that styling of those years. Many owners are fanatical about taking care of them and they perform well.
Those models have some awful pretty paint to. I like the RS's to. They run a'little cheaper and I think some have the electric windshield?
Beautiful, tested and  - well get one. Go for it!

Price is too high by a thou or 2.
some RTs (1150s?) had electric windshields, RSs never did.

Actually I'm pretty sure all of the 1100 and 1150 RTs had electric windshields.

And, I've never heard of and electric on an RS.

But there's a lot that I haven't heard of and won't know until I hear it.  Rolleyes

I didn't know about the RS. One ad on CL I read said adjustable windscreen.
Could it be manually adjustable?
The reason I like the RS is not having to deal with all the plastic around the bottom.
I had a 90 K1100RT with the electric windshield. I didn't know I would miss that feature so much.
High on my list is little if any buffeting.
Sorry I didn't mean to jack the thread.
I believe the pre-sharp edge fairing RT's will be collectible someday. There is a Buck Rogers quality I like.

This dealer has an '02 and an '04 on the floor and both have electric screens.  I really hate looking at bikes.  The one I happen to be drooling over at the time is THE ONE.

Seems like from nation wide CL searching that you could pick up R1150RT with nice extras - like better seat and risers for 6500.00. And as fanatical as some owners are - good maintenance records might be included.
If you haven't used it - http://www.searchtempest.com/
If you find one close to home - good.  If not - get someone to pick you up at the airport and ride it home.
Just don't buy them all - I still want one.

Yes the 2002 is the single plug head version and I've been told the linked brakes are 50/50. Not that I've ever really noticed. Bigsmile

Be sure to ride it and see if you have the flat/surge problem around 4900 rpm. A power commander will fix this problem. I have a techlusion on my 2002 and I had to do some other tweakage and dyno work to get around the too lean/surging issue. There is a world of info on this issue on the interweb. I believe the 2004s do not have this issue either at all or not as much.

The fat girl can dance and turns in very well and willingly - just keep it in the 4k - 6K rpm range. Don't forget the heated grips, two plug-ins, and the aforementioned electric windshield. Great charging system - keeps my Gerbings running!

Good luck on whatever bike you buy.

Edit: Yes $8K is too much for this year bike.

How about this one in Fayetteville AR

http://fayar.craigslist.org/mcy/2576763593.html

Add says 5500 but heading says 5000.00

I don't know where you are but riding anywhere from Fayetteville is a good ride.

Another toy to play with!  Excellent.  I'd be doing good to get my hands on 1 but I likes your optimism.  Champagne diet on beer budget.

Thumbsup Hopefully I'll have a reason to find out.

The one thing I'd like to change on this bike is the ergos aren't quite sporting enough.  I suppose that's RS territory.  I realize it's not the VFR but do you find the upright seating position limits the fun or is this thing all about sweepers and less about the tight stuff?  I can see myself trying to get leaned over the bars.

I can't speak for Kris, but my experience with Gretel is she does really shine in sweepers, but she does the tighter/goaty stuff very well too. Much better than you'd think. The combination of the torquey boxer, low COG, and the telelever suspension works very well as long as you have the throttle open. Pick the right gear for the the road, and there is little to no braking or shifting required. Just roll on roll off.

Yes the riding position is much more upright, but it's not an issue for me. Just takes a few miles to get in the groove. You may find yourself clearanceing the center stand occasionally though...

2Dflyer, 5 or 6 of those on IBMWR are located east of the Mississippi, (SC, NC, AL, GA and FL)  all should be easy enough to check out.  The '04 listed for 4500 is in Greenwood, SC.  I think it would be well worth your time and effort to have a chat with the seller on any or all of those.  IBMWR list phone #s of sellers.

good luck!

Well the wheelie ballast has a lot to do with clearancing the center stand...  Razz

So I'm trying to find a picture of me and Gretel railing on Hwy 94 in SoCal a couple of years ago... with me weighting the pegs and sliding off a bit...  stay tuned. But as M.Brane sez she excels at the sweepers, but she does the tight stuff too - but not quite like a more sporty type of bike. It is different, but I've taken her in some tight, technical uphill twisties - you just let her fall over but keep the throttle open and the torque underneath you and she'll boost you out of the turn.   Bigok

Ok - not quite as leaned over as I thought (isn't that always how it is?)

This is who I was chasing (or trying to...). Nothing like trying to keep up with a Ninja ZX-12....

You guys and gals that are scraping center stand feet might want to try what I did to mine. The metal tab that stops it can be bent in a certain way that will allow the cross member of the stand to tuck about 3/4" farther up into the catalytic converter.  3/4" vertical allows for quite a bit more lean angle.  I did mine because I have lowered Ohlins shocks but it can gain you a lot on a stock bike as well.
