A while back alphabet man and I were talking about next year's Borscht Burn and wondered if we could not somehow do something a bit different. For several years the Banff run was a great event (and one I never managed to make). The run started in Whistler or Penticton and worked its way to Banff. From there folks dispersed and returned home. It was a moving, multi-day event that sounded like a lot of fun.

Anyhoo, we were thinking that perhaps the Borscht Burn and Banff Run could morph so to speak into one great event, perhaps every other year for some variety.  Meet in Banff and ride our way back to Castlegar for Borscht and a BBQ.

So ... just puttin this out there for feedback

So from Banff  .... A

Could be epic ! ?  Bigok

What are your thoughts ??

I think that there are some great roads between the two, especially if you come west on TCH 1 and drop down at Revelstoke to Upper Arrow Lake  Bigok

The Banff Run (in its early years) was one of my favorite STN events. The individual riding to different locations each night really made it a great way to get in good riding and yet hang out with friends in the evening.

The Banff Run was great.
the BBBBQ is great.

What could be better?

Meet in Banff Thursd. Night
BBBQ Fri and Sat.  For those who can't leave early or stay late.
Meet in Penticton Sunday Night  (via Vernon and West Bank Road).

I love 5 day weekends.
BTW,  as well as being endorsed by Dante,  the Banff Run has received  AAAA rating from Chili. Chili Chili Chili

Hmmmmm. As one who spends about 1/4 of his time in a little town adjacent to Banff I offer my services for any legwork needing to be done at this end. Had the pleasure of meeting the first or second Banff run at Sask. Crossing and riding with them a ways...... Remember meeting Birdrunner, GTSrider, VFRJoe, CDN of course, and a few others. Good kids.  Lol

I'm good with a rolling sort of a get together.  It's riding right?  Bigok

The only issue with the intended route is the Banff part.  Like, really.  Banff??
Only Asian tourists go there.  I think Banff is really kind of overrated as an actual destination.  In fact we try like the dickens to avoid that whole stretch of the #1 highway.  It's full of 70 zones, cops with lasers, and tourists from Quebec that stop in the middle of the TransCanada Highway so they can take a picture of the mountain.  EEK!

But, if that's the way things go, you can count us in, but we'll likely just tag on at Revelstoke.

Is it ever too early to be planning meals?  Why, the first two ingredients to a road trip are good food and drink at the end of they day.  Bigsmile

IMH, Banff isn't a "destination", but it is a really good place to ride. The scenery is great and there are good places to eat nearby. Really, what else do you need for a stop on a motorcycle meet?  Bigsmile  It's not like STN is going to Disney World  Cool

I hear you in most respects. But ... I think Banff is not a destination in itself, but the staging area. From there we can ride and hopefully early in the morning, sample the beautiful mountains and vistas. Banff provides a lovely environment to meet, greet and have an evening together. From there folks could be free to ride their choice of routes to Castlegar. At their own speed.

Early morning is the key ... but hey ... you guys blast away and we will rendezvous somewhere much later.

Asian and Quebec ... ? In one post ?   Jeebus K ... I think you are putting down roots in Cow town !!!   Twofinger Lol

FWIW,  the origional "Banff Run" started in Jasper, and there simply isn't a prettier highway than the Banff/Jasper run.  (ie  Jasper, Lake Louise, Field, Revelstoke, Nakusp, New Denver ... Castlegar.)

Does make it a bit of a haul to Castlegar,  but WHAT a haul it is.

Hmmm...Banff could work...actually, I've never ridden east of the Rockies, I understand there is some nice riding up Hwy 40...

One issue, regarding the ride from Banff to Castlegar...if you're going via Revelstoke, or via Creston and up the lake, ferries can be a bit of an issue on any July weekend (motorhomes take up a lot of ferry space...).  Just sayin', but I wouldn't plan too long a ride on any route that involves a ferry crossing in the afternoon.

Another option might be a start location somewhere in Washington or Idaho? (of course, border crossings might pose some similiar issues to ferry crossings...)

The ride up Koocanusa from Eureka, via Libby Dam was most excellent.  There's even a good restaurant there, pluse cheap accommodations.  (It's also close to Glacier Nat'l Park)

I've always liked the idea of a rolling meet like that too.  It could travel across and through the whole continent with people joining and leaving at will.  Imagine how many STN'ers we could get if it could get started.

Fixed stops for at least a night or two ... yeah ....  Headscratch

Clearly, either because of demographics, economy or burnout the traditional ST.n events are kind of dying on the vine.  No offence to anyone involved but attendance is way down compared to years past.

Well, we tried that a couple of years ago with the STN goes to Hell tour, but didn't start soon enough to get momentum going.  A few people responded but we were already on the road (and what a trip!)  I think the idea still has merit.  Who knows, maybe it could turn into an annual event so people know they could "hitch a ride" on the rolling meet each year.

Yeah, some fixed points, some miscellaneous points... Need to come up with an interesting route with some "Destination".  Things like Hell Michigan, Noodle Texas, Zap North Dakota, Joe Montana, Idiotville Oregon, Vulcan Alberta, Skookumchuk B.C., Spuzzum B.C., the giant Paul Bunyan in California, etc.  Silly places or things as anchor points with some good roads and people in between.

Now would be the time to start the planning.  Need to get some route input from various regions.

I've always thought it would be fun to identify every paved pass on the continental divide, and then plan a trip that zigzags back and forth across the divide from the Canada-US border to the US-Mexico border.  Kind of like a longer version of a Three Flags rally and one that maximizes the number of passes and/or elevation changes.  It would be interesting to see the different routes one could identify to optimize the most desirable ST roads, funky little towns to stay in, etc.

Definitely would be a fun ride, but considering it took me a full day to prepare the borscht  and Liz just as long to get the BBQ ready we would certainly need to change formats and menu's. A ride like that Liz would  ride with me on the KTM and I certainly, won't be missing the ride to cook borscht, that would make me much toooooo grumpy to be around, so we are in but it would be a meet at the lake and look after all your own food and drink, which wouldn't be so bad IMHO. Our door is still open if that's what folks would like to do.   Bigok

Cool idea, but damn! That would take some serious commitment in time and planning to do it all in one trip. The three southernmost passes in Canada alone would take more than a day! Very cool concept though...  Bigok

And, a person wouldn't have to do the whole route.  People could join in for a leg, and then drop out and head back home.

That's kind of a neat map. Is there anyway I could see it with roads/ passes on it. You know, Headscratch A little more detail.  It does look like a lot of fun. Bigok

moving to a new thread...

Yes, that's a great idea, but not really consistent with the Borscht Burn & BBQ...at least, not as I see it.

...considering it took me a full day to prepare the borscht  and Liz just as long to get the BBQ ready we would certainly need to change formats and menu's.

Dunno about the borscht, but...well, a friend's husband is a chef, and he recently bought a full-sized BBQ trailer rig (drove down to the southeastern states to pick it up).  I could sound him out about catering the event...

That was discussed a bit last time, as we're all really missing out on quality time with "The Girls" as they're all so busy.  It's a lot of work, and while we certainly appreciate it, we really do miss Jim,Dave and the rest of the ladies.

But no messing with THE Borscht.  'kay?

As much as some of the other ideas seem neat, and can certainly be pursued in parallel, I would choose for the KBB staying basically the same.  At least until the Hosts get tired of us Hooligans and stop inviting us that is.  Bigok

Well, if the event IS still gonna be local (that is, not starting in Banff), I could volunteer to do pulled pork again, and maybe a big pot of homemade baked beans, for the meet & greet.  Then, you guys do sausage and borscht for Saturday at the lake.  Hmmm...

The last BBB was my first, and it was a hoot. I had a great time, met some really great people, and will always be thankful for Jim and Dave's incredible hospitality. I hope it is an event that goes on forever.

That said, Jim's idea of a rolling rally sounds really cool. It need not even be really long, time wise event. Plan a loop that would say take 3 or 4 days to complete. Set agreed upon terminus for each day, throw up the tents, and start the campfires and get to cooking some good hobo style food with them secret hobo spices.

One way or another, I am bound and determined to show up next year. And as my trip involves distance and old age, I have no problem with booking a good week, timewise. So, a combined Banff/Bubba's would be "the Bomb" as us Breaking Bad fans like to say. But I also gotta say Bubbas new avatar facial is a wee bit scary. Little too much rouge, methinks.

Has there been anymore consensus on this thing?

Just a word of caution on Banff in the full blown tourist season. Every hotel room in town books up and don't expect any deals.

But I swear I will make this years event. Wink

I know the timing of the Borscht/ BBQ is off again this year for my visit to British Columbia  but I was wondering if there would another meeting of sorts the end of June instead OR as well.
I know there maybe a couple of Ontarians in the west for another rally and we (us easterners) might want to put a face on a name. I know I met a couple last time I was out but I thought I would give you guys more of heads up.

Tom took the words right out of my mouth, as I'm one of those uppity Ontarians heading out to Castlegar in June he speaks of. Jeez Tom, looks what you started with our visit there last year LOL!

I've got a buddy here whose toying with coming out for that trip (rides a Bandit - woohoo! Somebody to go fetch ice 'n beer!)

Truth be told, I'm seriously entertianing the thought of skipping the ride back and moving out there to coincide with the meet. Kamloops so far is first choice, but the opportunities for me are MUCH greater in Vancouver/Victoria.

Regardless, it'd be great to put some faces with the names.

Good idea Thumbsup.  ZED & I generally make Canada Day into a longer weekend and ride to the Kootenays - often our first ride over the Rockies for the season.

Hey, we could add an Italian bike or two to the collection in the Kootenays Lol

All hell will break loose one day for you Mr. Bird...............who knows what will land in your Borscht?  or in your tent?   Or in your tank bags?   tank?  ooh, nasty!  Just saying,.............. don't poke the She bear.  And I will expect a wonderful hostess gift from you this summer.   I prefer a fine wine or vodka,   I've also developed a taste for Russian cognac.  See you in July, and not a day sooner!!!!!    Smile

We are clearly back to normal.

Sorry for disturbing the eithers. Let alone the collective plane.

It is December already and the mood shifts of October and November are starting to fade.

Thanks for you indulgence towards something different.

Different is good. Neh ?  Bigok

For some of us less so than others.

OK, is this happening this year or what?

I need to start making excuses not to attend now. (I am actually going to try to make it this year)

-  To see you not show up again will make it all worthwhile  Lol
-  To watch Lizzbet beat Bird Runner with a large stick priceless  Bigok
- To socialize and ride for the weekend with some of the finest folks I know  wouldn't miss it

I would like to keep the same format if Bubba is good with it but  but we might be calling in some markers to get a little more participation in helping prepare things. I am sure Jim will drop in with his  thoughts, That said I am always open to other ideas but last year was  Bigok its a tradition I would like to keep going

I think the idea of maintaining the status quo and as Dave says, TRADITION ! ... speaks loudest to everyone. I am OK with that too.

alphabet man and I just need to pick I date as a starting point.  So Dave ... PM me or give me a call this weekend and we can see what dates work best.  I am pretty flexible and can give myself time off when ever I choose !!  Lol

You know,  to see Baz actually show up, I'd cancell my trip to Europe especially since Liz has something special for me.   But I know better.

Lizzabet ....   promise me you won't beat anyone else while I'm gone,  it would demean our special relationship.   Yes,  I'm asking you to "Save yourself" for me.

Does this mean you aren't BB&Bing this year?  Is Colleen coming without you?

Bird, you are going to Europe are you not?

There are many leather dressed stick weilding women in Germany just waiting to steal you from Liz.  Wink

And I am pretty sure I will attend this year.
