Hey folks, just throwing this out there to see any folks want to join in for this IBA saddle sore ride.
This is a tribute ride for long time IBA member Jack Shoalmire. There are in state Saddsore 1ks being done in all 50 states this Saturday. If any riders want to join for the ride , we'll be meeting at the gas station just off I-25 and co-14 in Ft. Collins. Think it used to be a Conoco, maybe a Shell now? Meet time 4:45a, leaving at 5:00a.
http://maps.google.com/maps/place?q=gas+station&hl=en&cid=6848220547672075564
SS1k certs are half price for this event even for those that are not certified yet. Please note if you do want to join in, show up on a bike in good working order, with a range of a minimum of 160+ miles, and make sure to have suitable clothes for a variety of warm/cool/cold conditions. More info on Jacks page here -
http://www.nmpcs.com/Jacks_Ride/FAQ.html
. Make sure to print witness forms (although I'll bring a few extra to be safe).
Route for the ride is below - 1016 miles of CO - pace will be pretty quick so we can be back and over Wolfe Creek pass not to long after sundown.

just have the convenience store person be your witness....I've done it a few times when my departure time was in the wee hours.

I always prefer to have a *reliable* witness when possible though - got this one covered

I would've joined, but it was a bit short notice. Have a great trip, as the weather is supposed to be great. I'll be out, albeit on a much shorter ride, sat as well.

It's an SS1K....they're not as critical as BBG witnesses. They sign the paper and there you go....
But, you got it covered.

Justin,
Sent you an email as well, but I am going to have to bail on this one. Sorry man. Unfortunately the opthalmologist is not budging on this one. (apparently he is trying to save my vision or prevent a cornea transplant, so I "guess" he is doing me a favor, lol). These issues are coming at a very inconvenient time though.
Have fun, sorry to bail at the last minute!

Yeah, this royally sucks. The last 4 days all I have been thinking about is this ride and I even had the bike all packed up last night so I could get to bed early tonight. Not being able to see correctly is the worst! I am so stir crazy right now! It's going to be a long weekend! Have fun, ride safe, and post some pics!!!

All done - 1016 miles/19 hours - plus 80 miles ride to the start point, so unofficially 1096 miles
Hit some great roads, but would have been a lot more fun if I could have slept the night before
Will post up a ride report and some pics after I sleep

Justin,
Congratulations on your run!!
I was thinking about your ride as I started the accent up Monarch Pass. A 1k in 24 hours has been on my bucket list for awhile.
I concluded that the best chance would be in the summer, around the middle of June (Almost 15 hours of day light).
For myself, doing 600 miles is pretty easy thanks to the bike and some accessories. The only limiting factor is the day light. My rules are "in by dark" or if that fails "out of the mountains by dark"
Let me know if you decide to do another one!

Nice ride Justin! Great report as well. Wish I was there.
Clovis, I agree that I try and limit most of my mountain riding to day light, but I rode in the CO Freewheelers 1000-in-24 a couple months ago, and riding 50 from Canon City to Gunnison in the dark was a really neat experience! Granted, you ride a little slower than you would during the day, but climbing Monarch in the dark was pretty neat I must say. Unless you are doing 100% slab, it is pretty hard to maintain a pace to not ride in the dark at all, and I find it much less stressful over the course of the whole ride if you realize that, and also realize that you don't need to set any land speed records to complete a SS1000 and once it gets dark to just take your time and ride at a comfortable safe pace.

During mid summer, when the day's are at there longest here (almost 15 hours), it should be easy to do 1k run and keep the mountain riding portion during daylight.
I'm not planning any more long distance rides this year, but will definitely be doing some next year. Currently planning a BBG Trifecta attempt for next June, a few out of state rallies, and the IBA national meet here in August - so not sure if I will have the time or resources to squeeze in another SS1k next year as well.
If you're wanting to do one, check out the Freewheeler's 1k in 24 run like Josh mentioned - It's a great excuse to go out and ride 100 miles

Yeah, there is no need to rush to finish a SS1k, which was my approach on Saturday. I took my time riding the dark sections, and dilly dallied at gas/break stops, and still finished in 19 hours. So you can always mitigate your risk riding at night by just riding slower.
