'cause their ride reports (like ours) give birth to wanderlust. Every time I read about overseas rides (specifically the Middle East/Asia) I feel the need to hit the road.

I don't visit often, but there are some amazing trip reports posted. Like the retired RAF-lifer dude who had a running commentary of shipping his BMW GS to Miami and spending the better part of a year or two traveling North America. Chock full of pics and interesting commentary. Wanderlust indeed.

Every day. Yeah, it's a little "rougher" than this place, but there are some serious riders there...plenty of them too.
BTW, it's kind rude to come to a new forum (Weegee has 37 posts) and "diss" another forum. They served as a home-away-from-home when STN got hacked.

I spend a lot of time over there. Quite a bit more rough and tumble than STN so if swearing and people flipping the bird (official ADV salute) offends you, you might want to stay away. Great ride reports and as stated, quite a few serious riders over there. I'm sure that more than a few upcoming rides on my Wee Strom will be inspired by ride reports over there. It's the place to be if riding a true dual-sport all over the world appeals to you (paved and unpaved roads, dirt trails, bike camping, exotic locales, etc).

I go there pretty much every day for going on 5 years. Best Ride Reports forum I know of by far and the Flea Market is great. Try reading the Striking Viking thread from the very beginning!
It does suck to see all the exotic rides those guys go on when you can't afford to do it yourself.

I check that site out every once in a while.
I used to check it out daily and read the ride reports. After a while I found myself becoming depressed seeing all those awesome pics of people going here, there and everywhere. There was one guy from India that was posting pics of rides up in the Himalayas, all I wanted was to be out of my damn house, winter to piss off and jump on my bike and go anywhere.
Once riding season gets into full swing maybe I'll start looking at the ride reports at ADVRIDER again then I won't feel so bad.

I'm betting there are more paved road ride reports on advrider.com than dirt.

I've been a member of Advrider for a year (I think)....I thought you guys were goofing
But they take the cake
If I want to go for a "adventure" ride I get on the ST3 and go...I don't need a stinkin DS to have an adventure
Besides doing face plants, getting the bike stuck in mud up to the seat and sleeping on the ground is not my idea of adventure. The US has more paved roads than any country in the world....I'll ride them first...then all the other paved roads in the world, then if I get bored I'll take the ST3 down some gravel roads.

Yep...I venture over there every now and then. Has me wanting a dual sport 250 something to get offroad so I can continue the ride when the road runs out.
Why not something a little bigger, like the 450, or the 650? Much more comfortable on those couple hour trips to where the blacktop ends...

It's an outstanding site. If you want to try a change of pace, check out the "Minimalist Touring" thread under Thumpers. Pick up a 250cc or smaller, yes I said smaller, dual sport and "hit the trial". I've been doing this on the wifey's Suzuki DR200. It's a freakin' blast!

I feel this really is the way to go. That thread is very cool and really hits on what I want to do with my riding time.
You see me troll and such in the other areas of this forum. It isn't because I actually hate the bigger bikes, they just no longer interest me. My stance that any idiot can ride an ST across country is not a statement to be a troll...it is just fact. I sold my ST1300 because it was no fun to ride. We also have a 2003 VFR in the garage still that I feel the same way about and neither of us ever ride it. You could take either one to California and back and still feel like you hadn't really gone anywhere. I have since been getting smaller and smaller bikes to ride and they are much more fun.

I discovered ADV through STN and haven't been back here much since. Why? I moved to a new state two years ago and posted here looking for riding partners but instead got the cold shoulder from STNers. There are quite a few lone wolfs and armchair riders here. The folks on ADV actually ride motorcycles and we've had some great rides/rallies. YMMV.

Everyone has different experiences with different sites. I find Advrider to be far superior to ST.N myself and there are many reasons for that. There are armchair riders everywhere on the net and ST.N certainly has it's share, but I don't think there are any fewer at Advrider. I've had good times at meets from both sites and met a lot of good people, but the people I try to ride with the most I met over there (mostly because our riding styles are very similar).
ST.N tends to pride itself on not being as harsh to the noob, but from what I have seen ST.N is a lot meaner spirited as a whole than ADvrider toward newer people. The friendly ribbing at Advrider is tolerable, but you mostly get a lot of people talking down to you and a bunch of preachy crap from this site.

I've been following this guys ride report. He got fed up with the corporate world and quit his job to tour the US.

Not like you can't tour on it...See the other thread on dual-sports and touring... We just get a bit more offroad w/o having radar, microwave, and lavatory.
What I say is back to the days of old with a small bike and a duffel bag strapped to the back! Now that is touring!

I go there quite a bit, the problem is that I tend to get lost in Jo Momma and never get out. My post count there is a little ridiculous...
Saskatchewan is curvy road purgatory, but there's lots of gravel around, and I end up riding it whether I want to or not. There's an old XR250L 3 hours from me that may have to be purchased... or I may put OEM Uly Pirelli Scorpion Syncs on my Ninja 650 (they fit!) and try to get more comfortable on gravel. Time will tell.

ADVrider is my "home" site. It is more than just a motorcycle website. It is a family of riders who will do anything to help a fellow rider. There's quite a bit of banter...especially in Jo momma, but it's all in the name of brotherly love. The cache of knowledge there is mind boggling.
To illustrate the sense of community I'll share a story. One of the regulars experienced a drive shaft problem on a cross country trip through rural Canada. Within an hour of posting his problem he had parts being shipped from Atlanta and a pick-up truck enroute to take him to a place where he could hang out for a few days. It's an amazing community.
For the information of the ST forum, the OP here advertised a bike on ADV. The price seemed out of line and a couple folks made comments about the price. One called it "gold plated" another said he paid the same price for one in 1988. Our OP's response was
"Two words sum it up.
Fuck You."
Our OP advertised a bike as his first post on the site, asked what many perceived to be a price that was too high, then got mouthy with the community when he was called on it. As a consequence he was roughed up and deservingly so. Prior to the above quoted outburst he did nothing to try to explain his pricing.

The friendly ribbing at Advrider is tolerable, but you mostly get a lot of people talking down to you and a bunch of preachy crap from this site.
The biggest problem with ADV is the brand loyal biggot Asshats. Especially the BMW only guys. They take intolerability to a whole new level. Aside from that it's a great site.

For pure dirt bikes, I totally agree. For DS RTW type bikes, I'll give the nod to BMW (though I'd put a couple others ahead of them).

I wouldn't take a BMW RTW either (I'd stick with the KLR for that). But as far as dirt goes, we should see what the X-Challenge has to offer. It is the first BMW that I really like enough to actually purchase.
They also need to put that 800cc engine in the 650GS, that would be something.

I can not get over how many KTMs there were at the Odessa 100 last weekend! I knew that they were growing in popularity, but to see that they made up probably one out of ever 7 bikes?? It surprised me (and pleased me; I think they're cool

I was joking about that statement.
Around here the enduro's and hare scrambles are about 70% KTM. There are quite a few dealers in the area, which is not the norm across the country.
You don't see many on the street, though. Other than mine there is someone in the area that owns a street legal 450 EXC (at least that's what I think it is) that I see on rare occasion.

I like to visit ADVrider often. Some good reading there, a whole thread about mods on my particular model of bike alone, as well as, finding a like-new replacement seat for my 20 year old bike at a great price. Thanks...ahem...ADV.
(As my particular model bike was only available here in Canada for a little over 1 year, parts tend to cost a small fortune).

I think I spend more time at ADVRider than here for much the same reasons that others have already mentioned. I live vicariously through the ride reports and it's a great resource for equipment reviews since they push gear to far greater extremes than I ever will. They have a reputation for being coarse, but really it's not so bad outside the Jo Momma forum.

Gee it has almost been two days since this post was hit. So here I am to save the day ???DOH! OK bad quote.
I do hang out over at ADVRider as many of you might guess but it all depends what bike I am riding that day and my mood. I have had great times riding with that AND this group. I think we have a LOT of hidden cross overs here.
Is that called cross riding?
Cheers all

The US has more paved roads than any country in the world....I'll ride them first...then all the other paved roads in the world, then if I get bored I'll take the ST3 down some gravel roads.
My thought exactly. I took a KLR to Alaska and did the whole adventure touring thing. By the time I made it to Alaska I think I had ridden a total of 20 miles on gravel. What a waste. Wish I could redo that trip on the Sprint. It would be so much better and more fun.

If you only rode just 20 miles on gravel, how was this an adventure ride?
Dirt roads are hidden and many are hard to find, you have to seek them out, they are there if you are willing to find them.
I love both kind of riding, but I can't ride to places like this on my ST3
