This is a totally free GPS solution for the iPhone (and possibly Android?), that gives spoken turn-by-turn guidance.  It uses cellular data, so it would have to be monitored carefully.

So far, it works great in my cage.

I will try it with the phone in my pocket, but I doubt the GPS signal would reach through.

It seems it would work well in a tankbag.

Has anyone else tried it?

I have that app but never tried it for directions.  I will try to give it a go, seeing that Google will not share their Google-Navigation app that does the same thing for Androids but not the Apples.  I doubt the Mapquest will work in conjunction with music playback?  The GPS should still work in your pocket.

From what I have read, it will interrupt the streaming music for turn-by-turn, but I have not verified yet.

Mapquest will interrupt your streaming music to give you voice directions.  I use it whenever I need to find my way around a big city I am not familiar with.  I used it this summer heading into Seattle.  I programmed the address of my downtown hotel in at my last fuel stop before entering the city.  I still had music playing and the gps would overide the music whenever it came on to give directions.  I use etymotic earbuds coupled with my ipod or iphone - I love riding with tunes and having talking gps when entering a strange city is great.  I must confess I still like looking at maps and finding my own way from town to town but for directions in a strange city it can't be beat.

Thanks.  I confirmed that it works with music playback this weekend, too.  I didn't know you could program fuel stops - I will have to look more closely at this app later, thanks NotDeadYet.  It's too bad that the regular Google Map on the iOS can't perform this simple task.

Two problems - lose the net connection and life gets icky.  Control over the routing process is limited.  And, for Verizon users, a phone call breaks the Internet connection.
