Canada urged to swap beaver emblem for bear
Conservative senator calls beaver 'toothy tyrant'
...

A Conservative senator says it's time Canada was symbolized by something more majestic than a buck-toothed rodent.

Senator Nicole Eaton wants the polar bear to replace the beaver as an official emblem of Canada.

She says the polar bear is Canada's "most majestic and splendid mammal," and a powerful symbol in the lives of aboriginal peoples in the North. She believes the furry white carnivore's "strength, courage, resourcefulness and dignity" add up to an appropriate symbol for modern-day Canada.

By contrast, she derides the lowly beaver as a "19th century has-been," a "dentally defective rat," a "toothy tyrant" and a nuisance that wreaks havoc on its environment.

Eaton acknowledges the beaver's involuntary role in founding Canada — providing the fashionable pelts that fuelled the fur trade — but she says it's now time for a change.
P.O.V.:

Is the polar bear a better symbol for Canada? Take our survey.

"A country's symbols are not constant and can change over time as long as they reflect the ethos of the people and the spirit of the nation," Eaton told her Senate colleagues Thursday. "The polar bear, with its strength, courage, resourcefulness and dignity is perfect for the part."

Eaton said the beaver should "step aside as a Canadian emblem, or, at the least, share the honour with the stately polar bear."

Take the survey here ...

Aside from the NWT, Nunavut, and Churchill Manitoba, you probably won't see too many polar bears in Canada.

Saskatchewan polar bears? Nein. Victoria BC polar bears? Nada! Toronto? Zip.

So, please remind me...we maintain the senate, why?

Senator Nicole Eaton is an idiot:  http:// http://edmonton.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local/CTVNews/20111028/eaton-beaver-polar-bear-111028/20111028/?hub=EdmontonHome

The beaver is an industrious animal that lives in harmonious groups that work together to build a home to protect them from a harsh climate.  Polar bears are loners that wander the Arctic, killing other animals (including people) for food when they're not hanging out at the Churchill city dump.

I was just ribbing the American ST.N members about the Bald Eagle--a scavenger that often eats carrion or steals food from other raptors--being the symbol of the US.  Personally, I much prefer the beaver as a national symbol...

  Lol

I say stick with the beaver, the Polar bear is becoming inbred with it's Grizzly cousin these days. I have never seen an inbred beaver. (Maybe dated a few though). Also the Polar bear is becoming extinct according to the global warming people.

If you ever had a beaver problem, you know they never go away.
