Garmin Nuvi 550 loses trip data

So I use a cheap Gramin Nuvi 550 on the bike. The last few times I've done long rides my Garmin has lost it's trip data about halfway through. Maybe loses data is not the best terminology, it's more like the trip data becomes inaccurate. It's like all of a sudden the miles traveled jumps to some crazy value and throws off all the other data, like overall and moving averages. Seems to happen around 700-800 miles. Has anyone had a similar experience with this or any other Garmin unit or have any idea how to correct it? Really sucks losing the data in the middle of a rally or such.

Sounds like a software glitch. If it's under warranty, Garmin should fix/replace the unit for free.
Ask Garmin if there are any known issues. It's possible the cheaper models have a limit on how much trip data they save at one time, but I don't see why they would do that.

Thanks, I will call Garmin support when I have some time. Just throwing this out there in the interim. I'm wondering if the unit has limited RAM perhaps? It is rather annoying though.

I've had random strangeness from Garmin products in the past -- often, loading the most recent software helps.
This will also be the first thing support asks you when you get through to em.
hope this helps

Thanks - do you mean the latest Maps, or the firmware? Just updated now from my.garmin.com. Of course, won't know if that's helped till my next 700ish + mile ride.

Firmware.
Thankfully, it doesn't that that long to do...especially if you have broadband available.

Yep, firmware.
I am STILL, after a year, trying to figure out how to update the maps successfully, so I would not offer advice regarding mappage.

Presuming Garmin does all the stuff the same, it's via the web browser and your free Garmin account. If you have a map update available, you install the plug-in and the program pretty much does the rest once you input the code for your update.
It does take FOREVER to get done.

this is so -- however, it doesn't address my problem deleting the old maps . . . .long story, tawdry and cheap, not worth going into here.
