2006 K1200S - 23k.  Today after work, I was rolling back in neutral, and the bike came to a stop, like I hit curb.  Bike in neutral - odd.  I rolled the bike forward under engine power a few feet and then tried to coast the bike backwards again, and it was fine.

Went home, about 10 miles away, and same thing in the garage.  I pushed a little harder, and the bike would go through the resistance, but then started to pulse, with a lot of resistance.

On the centerstand, the rear wheel is really hard to turn by hand.  The engine starts and runs fine, and the problem is the same with the rear brake caliper completely removed, so I'm thinking FD or drive shaft.

If I apply power to the rear wheel with the motor, the wheel will turn, but there's a lot of resistance, and makes a noise like there's friction, again, a kind of pulse or vibration to it... like a bolt or whatever caught in a gear.

There is no play in the wheel, so I'm not thinking bearing at this point.  There is no leakage from the rear end either.

Ideas?  Not too stoked since I just broke down on the road last week and had to replace a fuel pump @ a dealer's for a cool $700.  Bike did make loud, unidentifiable clunking a few times, not sure if it's related or not.

Posted up in I-BMW and ADV as well...

Mother#$%^&*er.  I swear this bike continues to bite every freaking hand that touches her!

I'd start by pulling the rear wheel, and dropping the final drive to change the fluid.  Should be one nut on the back of the drive.  If there's metal flakes in there it's the main gear.  Good news is that it's fixable - you can do a search for Anton Largiarder - he might be able to help.  From what I understand though it's not that "bad" to do the work yourself.  It's not uncommon for the FD to not leak even with a blown pinion gear.

If it's not the FD, then it's probably the U-Joint on the shaft.  I'd check Beemerboneyard for a used replacement shaft or ebay.  The driveshaft is rubber-shimmed, it's possible (*but unlikely) the rubber shimming blew out?

I tell you the Holy Water sizzled when I sprinkled that bike!

Needless to say, something's amiss.

FD needs to come off at the least.

Stuck at a big bolt - can't get it off.  No power tools as the kids are in bed - so maybe tomorrow.

Well, I can also offer this, from today's NY Times:

[CATEMACO, Mexico — In the dimly lighted back room of a modest house in this tourist city now largely devoid of tourists, Luis Tomás Marthen Torres, a warlock with 50 years of experience, closes his eyes and chants as he briskly rubs a stark white egg over the arms, chest and neck of a worried customer. The ritual is old and common here in Mexico’s dominant hub for masters of the occult — where wizardry is passed from generation to generation . . ..

So, if you are near Catemaco, find a sorcerer and an egg. . ..   Bigok

OK, can't get the the final bolt off the bottom to remove the whole thing, as my torx bits only go up to T50, so I worked around for now to see the problem more clearly.

This.  Right here.

Is why I sold my R1100S when I did.  That just looks expensive (both in $$ and time).

Sorry to see that mess.  (and I hope you can find a good and cheap replacement).
