2006 K1200S - 23k.  Today after work, I was rolling back in neutral, and the bike came to a stop, like I hit curb.  Bike in neutral - odd.  I rolled the bike forward under engine power a few feet and then tried to coast the bike backwards again, and it was fine.

Went home, about 10 miles away, and same thing in the garage.  I pushed a little harder, and the bike would go through the resistance, but then started to pulse, with a lot of resistance.

On the centerstand, the rear wheel is really hard to turn by hand.  The engine starts and runs fine, and the problem is the same with the rear brake caliper completely removed, so I'm thinking FD or drive shaft.

If I apply power to the rear wheel with the motor, the wheel will turn, but there's a lot of resistance, and makes a noise like there's friction, again, a kind of pulse or vibration to it... like a bolt or whatever caught in a gear.

There is no play in the wheel, so I'm not thinking bearing at this point.  There is no leakage from the rear end either.

Ideas?  Not too stoked since I just broke down on the road last week and had to replace a fuel pump @ a dealer's for a cool $700.  Bike did make loud, unidentifiable clunking a few times, not sure if it's related or not.

Posted up in I-BMW and ADV as well...

Mother#$%^&*er.  I swear this bike continues to bite every freaking hand that touches her!

I'd start by pulling the rear wheel, and dropping the final drive to change the fluid.  Should be one nut on the back of the drive.  If there's metal flakes in there it's the main gear.  Good news is that it's fixable - you can do a search for Anton Largiarder - he might be able to help.  From what I understand though it's not that "bad" to do the work yourself.  It's not uncommon for the FD to not leak even with a blown pinion gear.

If it's not the FD, then it's probably the U-Joint on the shaft.  I'd check Beemerboneyard for a used replacement shaft or ebay.  The driveshaft is rubber-shimmed, it's possible (*but unlikely) the rubber shimming blew out?

I tell you the Holy Water sizzled when I sprinkled that bike!

Needless to say, something's amiss.

FD needs to come off at the least.

Well, I can also offer this, from today's NY Times:

[CATEMACO, Mexico — In the dimly lighted back room of a modest house in this tourist city now largely devoid of tourists, Luis Tomás Marthen Torres, a warlock with 50 years of experience, closes his eyes and chants as he briskly rubs a stark white egg over the arms, chest and neck of a worried customer. The ritual is old and common here in Mexico’s dominant hub for masters of the occult — where wizardry is passed from generation to generation . . ..

So, if you are near Catemaco, find a sorcerer and an egg. . ..   Bigok

Remind me not to buy a cursed bike just because it's cheap and I have mechanically inclined friends...wait, I'll have a very hard time staying away from a used K1300S with issues when I find one in my budget, who am I kidding. Hopefully it won't take a torch and a rubber mallet to fix.

Good luck with that...used parts sound pretty good right now.

There's a few available on fleabay.  I think all the K1200 series bikes are the same - or so it appears to me for now.

Knocking on wood - this may end up way cheaper than fuel pump, but with way more down time.  I have to beg, rob, and steal the wife's car in the meantime as she was my only transport until I got the KLRE up and running (which won't happen anytime soon).

From what I've read there is a small difference in the final drive gear ratios between the K1200s and the K1200R/R Sport.  Don't know about the GT.

K12R Final drive ratio 1:2.92
K12S Final drive ratio is 1:2.82

Part numbers are different too.

You can read more here.

Hope you get her fixed soon.

Probably undetected crash damage from the LawnDart Superman Air incident.  I'd chalk it up to the risk of buying a crashed bike.  Either that or the extend high speed running by KSANN.

Happy to report that the new FD is on and bike is back on the road.

Cost to repair as follows...
FD: $280 off ebay
Quart of FD oil: $20 (BMW now recommends a $48 quart)
Bolt I stripped out: $25
German spectacular spline grease: $22
Circlip tool: $17
T55 Torx bit: $5
And almost a week of down time.

Look for her in the classifieds soon.  I'll put on CL as well, at a much higher price, but I'll make a nice donation to ST.N if i make a profit.   Smile

Deploying in about a month, so I'll prob buy a bike when I return.  We'll see what the Motus turns out to be...   Inlove

I'd really like to buy a new bike on return (if I can save some cash), but knowing me I'll just cruise the CL and find something cheap.    Lol

Kids are starting to get expensive, so they'll have to make their case against a new bike.   Bigok

OK, can't get the the final bolt off the bottom to remove the whole thing, as my torx bits only go up to T50, so I worked around for now to see the problem more clearly.

There goes the neighborhood...

Only 23 K on the clock?

Repair & sell A.S.A.P. would be my first thought.

Wow!

I see there is a classic write up in the classifieds here for a brave soul.  Or a priest.

Come on now, I bet with a quart of chicken blood, a good Voodoo priest, a little dancing and some rituals the dark soul can be cleansed

Have you ever thought of getting some holy water from a church    and giving her a good bath

or maybe some bells??

I would buy her but I value my drivers license
