So my beloved ER6i's of 5 years finally crapped the bed.  The connection at the base is clearly the issue (I did replace the filter first just to be sure).  I went online to go ahead and order a replacement and it appears the 6i's have been discontinued.  The closest Etymotic replacement (pricewise at least) is the MC5.  Based on the reviews I've read on Amazon they don't fit as flush to your ear and are easily pulled out when putting your helmet on.

Now I have recently tried a pair of the highly praised MEElectronics M6 earbuds which sound ok at best but not as good as the 6i's.  They have an over the ear cord arrangement which makes it nearly impossible to keep inserted in your ear when donning the helmet = no good for me.

So those who are familiar w/ the 6i's know the quality and fit that we're used to.  What replacement should I look at next?  I like the Etymotic HF5's as they appear to be a solid replacement but they're really expensive, $150 at least!

They may no longer be making them, but there are plenty for sale on the 'net.

I bought a new set on eBay when I figured this out; there may still be some out there if you're willing to search. Amazon appears to be done.

Etymotic was doing out-of-warranty replacement on them, but I just dug up the link and it appears that the ER6i is no longer on that list (http://www.etymotic.com/cs/outwarranty.html).

Haven't found anything else that fits as well, is as compact for under a helmet AND has the noise cancellation levels of the ER6i, not in the Etymotic or Shure line-up. Looked at the S-plugs, however, and if I do kill both sets of the Etys, that's likely what I'll try if I can cough up the dosh.

Well I decided to hang on to my money and try this first:

voila!

Good thing since I just bought new filters and ear tips only a few months ago.  My soldering skills aren't the best so I won't be surprised if something fails before long but they work fine for now.  These things just sound so much better than any other earbuds I've used before.

I was looking for new tips for my ER6i's, but the big retailer on Amazon (can't remember the name, but got very good reviews) did not list anything for the ER6i's. They showed the ER6's, as well as many other different brands and models of noise isolating earphones, but not the ER6i's.

I'm really liking the new hf5s.
They're slightly longer in the barrel than the ER6is but they still fit nicely under my SymaxII.
Acoustically, I can't tell 'em from the 6s, but they seem to block ambient noise better.
They also have an inline mic, and control buttons that the 6s lack.

Nice work. Thumbsup The cords on the er-6i have always been the weak spot IMO.

My next ones will be the foam jobbers on this page. I have a set taht use a different design, but the business end is very similar (speaker portion inside a roll-up foamie) and I really like them.

Digging up an old thread, but has anyone found a suitable replacement yet?  My ER6i's are on their last legs...

Odds are they don't work due to the wiring. If yours are flaky it costs you nothing to take them apart and attempt a fix.

I was looking for ear buds for son & while reading different reviews I saw these & just ordered from Amazon (along w/ a Steve McQueen book, "McQueen's Machines") - I'm gonna test drive the headphones, I got the type w/ mic (as my cell is my player)

Review > http://www.stereophile.com/content/thinksound-ts02-ear-headphones
I especially like the reference to the Beats by Dre - Which I think are Way too bassy

About that sound: I found it immediately engaging, with fine resolution of detail, easy highs, clear mids, and a bold, robust bass. Happily, this was not the bloated, overripe bass I heard with the Beats by Dr. Dre headphones, but a much better controlled and more musical variety. I don’t consider myself a “bass freak” or anything like that

Anywoo, the ts02 are on Amazon for $90 (w/mic)  - I'll test drive em for ya Wink

The TS02's look promising as far as sound quality. I wonder how they are with noise isolation, and fit.

I still have two pair of ER6i's left, one repaired, one replacement.
