Leaving from Allentown, PA, I have to arrive in the Concord, NH area Sunday afternoon (6 Nov.), albeit in a National rent-a-racer.  Unfortunately, this means slabbing it as much as possible.  The question is: how screwed up are the major roads Along the way?  Word is that the Concord area isn't too bad (or at least they could handle the snow).  As it stands now, I plan to find my way across the Tappan Zee, turn towards Hartford, and just push north.

The good news is there's no need to slab it back the other way.  Leaving sometime Monday and having to be back NTL 6PM Tuesday, anyone got any good routes that avoid the slabs but still get the miles on?  I'll be in a VW Vanagon, so twisties aren't needed here.  Darn...

Late response...but i would have said "head west" through NH and into southern Vermont...then chase the Hudson River south.

How did the trip go?

The "fast" route north was actually an amazing detour as we went around the edges of Boston.  Getting to center NH is really a case of "you can't get there from here".

The "slow" route back was to head to Milford, NH (my father grew up there), and then west to Brattleboro, across VT on VT 9 to Bennington (nice twisties and elevation changes!), turn onto NY 7 (OK road but nothing fun) and back to the Thruway south.  If we'd had more time, we would have taken the Taconic but the clock got to us.

We stopped here for pizza:
