After many miles on the FJR, I traded it in for a new Goldwing. I must admit that my wife had some input as she felt the Goldwing would be more comfortable for her. Well, after a month and about 1600 miles I am quite impressed. The Goldwing is a fantastic ride! My question, am I still in the sport touring club or not?

Typically I would say you're in the full blown tour/full dresser club, but TheRedOnesAreFaster & I had Yellow Wolf video record us riding "The Dragon" & he had no problem keeping up & when we had to follow him, it was all we could do to keep up! He had his knees draggin' & had hard parts throwing sparks! It's a tough call...

I'm happy to hear a goldwing can qualify.  I should still be ok on my KLT, since trading the Sprint ST.   Smile  Always happy to be riding and I have to go a couple hours just to get into some decent twists and turns.  The LT does great on those, and is much more comfortable, for me, getting there.

I for one am less concerned about looking to the left column and seeing what people ride, and more concerned about looking in the right column and seeing what they say about riding.

Not a fan of the Cruisers or full sized Touring bikes. I've had both and I guess I'm just not old enough to be riding them yet as they were both extremely uncomfortable compared to the 'busa. But Sport Touring is a state of mind. You can drag hard parts on anything Bigsmile

Congrats on the new bike though. When I had a 'wing, the second biggest complaint after how uncomfortable was the noise from the back seat Bigsmile

Congrats on the new Wing. I've heard they're nice pigs.

I sat on a 2007 and I tell ya that thing felt lighter than my Concours. Well balanced bike, low COG on the Wing.

I'd like to hit an 1800 just to see what they ride like.

Well, no one has a mind like you.  I appreciate that fact, and get a kick out of you.

However, I have no delusions about this forum actually being about "sport-touring".  Somehow the original  idea has degenerated into simply people that ride their bikes more than average and like to go on trips and/or take twisty roads once in awhile.

Still better than the other motorcycling forums out there.

I think it is because most of the posters on here actually ride (Not just to bike nite) and Neal is a pretty tolerant guy (Albeit it frequently hurts him Bigsmile) and this attitude has led to a sense of community.

There are a lot of little groups of riders on here (all over the country) that meet for coffee or a meal and communicate on here.

I'd say some determining factors for whether you're still in 'the club' would include a) did you grow a long grey beard after receiving the goldwing 3) does your beer belly protrude more than 2" past your belt ? If no, then you're good

One bit of advice: don't hang out too much on Gold Wing-specific forums.  It'll add 20 years to your life, but it does it all at once.

o
No kidding.

hang out on www.goldwingfacts.com only as-needed.  Stay there too long and you'll be persuaded to run a car tire on your Wing.

Hahahahaha.  (not kidding on that, either.)

My father had an 1800 and he let me take it for a spin.  I was pretty impressed with the raw power, lifted the front end of the ground.  He was not impressed until later, after a couple of beers, when he was re-telling the story to my wife......

I enjoyed that bike, wouldn't mind having one in the garage but it could not be my only.  Oh, and also I can't afford one.

I had two GL1800's: a 2001 that I put 130K miles on including 3 cross-countries; and a 2009 that I traded the older one on in on and immediately invested in an upgraded Traxxion suspension, powder coated wheels, and some other farkles.   Also had a '98 GL1500 before that but that's kinda apples 'n oranges.

But for some reason I never warmed up to the new Wing - my riding tastes had changed, I guess; and I sold it within a few months, after only 9K miles and morphed over to an R1200GS (I treated my Wing like a GS on many occasions).

There's only one reason a bought a Goldwing (new 2009).

My wife told me if you want me to go on trips with you, you must get a more comfortable bike for her (the passenger).

She had been riding on the back of my 2003 Honda VFR. We are in good shape but not spring chickens anymore. I could not blame her, I would not want to ride on the back of a sport bike. So we went to several dealers and she sat on ST 1300, Kawasaki C14, and then a Goldwing. That was it. She said it would have to be a Goldwing.

So I was thinking (and I had always thought) that a Goldwing is way too big for me to handle (I'm 5 ft 7 in and 145 lbs). Well I took one on a test ride and wow. Except for slow parking lot maneuvering, the GW rides much smaller than it is. I've put 25,000 mile on the GW in the last 2.5 years and 3,000 on the VFR. I will start riding the VFR more solo soon, but one of the things I like best about the GW is the shaft drive (no sprockets to change, no chain to clean / adjust).

Oh, and by the way, I'm glad my wife made me get a GW.

Later,

Mark

A wing is one of the heaviest, biggest well made bikes out but anything that's out of ground clearance with half an inch worth of chicken strips left is all tourer and no sport...to me anyway.

 Headscratch Headscratch

nope.

i rode wings for many years. i moved to the fjr. i even smoked 1800s while during the break in period on the bike, so didn't go over 4 grand RPM.

it's a luxo-tourer. deal with it.
