Saw this commercial this weekend and LMAO.

I think only gamers will get it the humor in it.  And it must have cost them some serious $$$$$ to get those stars.  No wonder these games cost so damn much these days.  I still haven't played MW2 on PC because for over a year after it was released everyone wanted full retail for it.  Ummmmm....no. Seems no matter how hard I try, I will always suck at these games.   Oh I'm pretty good in single player, but get me online and I die faster than a carnival goldfish.    Crazy

Nope, there is COD Elite service but no you don't have to pay to play the game.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Call_of_Duty:_Elite

Call of Duty: Elite is a free/subscription-based service created by Beachhead Studios for the multiplayer portion of Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Much like Bungie.net and Battle.net, the service will feature lifetime statistics across multiple games as well as a multitude of social-networking options.[1] It was announced initially by the Wall Street Journal and was showcased at E3 2011 by Activision.[2] The subscription based portion of Elite is priced at $49.99 USD per year for all the free features including exclusive premium features such as monthly downloadable content, daily competitions with virtual and real life prizes, the ability to level up your clan, pro analysis and strategies, Elite TV, and more.[3]

Call of Duty: Elite will have a console app for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game. The console app will allow users to access Call of Duty: Elite on their consoles.[4] Elite will also have a mobile app which will allow users to access Call of Duty: Elite on their smartphones such as the iPhone and the Android.[5] Elite will also have Facebook integration which will allow users with Facebook accounts to see their Facebook friends when they come online to any Call of Duty title and will allow them to invite their friends to a lobby from the Facebook app.[6] The public beta was released on July 14, 2011 on the Xbox 360 exclusively for Black Ops. Invites for the PS3 version began being sent out on September 19, 2011. To get into the beta, users would sign up at the Call of Duty: Elite website, after which they would be emailed telling them that they had been accepted. The beta ended on October 18, 2011, however, Activision stated that "Players can be confident that all beta activity carries over when Call of Duty: Elite officially launches on November 8th."[7]

Jeep built a Black Ops Edition as well. People need to realize there is more money in gaming than movies. Its huge, way bigger than you would think.

Black Ops commercial for those that missed it.  Bigok

Agreed. And thats why games cost so much. Not because of the fancy commercials.

Black Ops brought in $650 million dollars the first few days after launch in 2010. MW2 brought in $550 million the year before that (in just five days). Will be interesting to see what MW3 does.  Smile  If the pace continues these three games will have brought in $1.9 billion dollars in just 15 days of retail sales.

I fully realize it as I've been a gamer for 30 years.  I still haven't bought in to the value of some of these games.  For example:  Portal 2 cost me $55 at launch ( I believe).  Took me 6 hours to finish it.  That's $9.20 per hour in value.  That's equivalent to paying $18.40 for a 2 hr movie ticket.  Portal 2 should have been priced at $30 IMO.

Some of these games are REALLY priced wrong, and it's because they have to pay for insane advertising and development.

It's very rare that I buy games brand new anymore.  They just aren't worth it.

True, Gears of War 3 was one that left me feeling ripped off. I took a gamble seeing how the developer had TWO years to get it right. How could it be a bad game? I paid $60 for it, played it for two weeks. I did get $40 for it on trade in though. Games like COD will also require downloadable content over its lifespan. I have about $100 into Black Ops but I have probably 400+ hours into playing it. That makes it pretty cheap.  Bigsmile

Its not the advertising. Video game rollouts are big but the launch publicity is nothing compared big movies. Video games cost $59.95 because that is what the market will pay.

Say a game company spends $20 million or more (the promotion budget for a summer blockbuster film) to promoted a game that will bring in $400 million. That advertising and promotion budget isn't affecting the retail price of the game.

The gaming industry keeps getting bigger and I doubt prices are going to drop.

60 bucks for a new game which is full of bugs kills me. I'll wait for prices to drop and the inevitable patches.

Any recommendations for a good 'ol run and gun first person shooter like Quake3? I'm tired of teams, leveling up, and having to configure my weapons. Just give me a rocket launcher, the railgun and I'm a happy camper!

I look at it this way.  If I spend $60 on a game and spend 20 hours playing it, that is $3 an hour.  Then I usually mail the game to my son (in college, although in the case of MW3 my son has already pre-ordered it too).  These days even going to see a movie costs me about $10 per person. So I figure $3 or so an hour for some entertainment isn't a bad deal.  Typically I buy games after they've been out a while, and some games I have spend much more time on and I'm not what most would call an avid gamer.  Besides, what else and I going to do when I'm not riding?

Yeah I just had my son look up our stats. We both spent about 600 hours each playing Black Ops.  Wow Crazy  Oh well we do not have any TV shows that we watch and neither of us watch sports so I guess it all evens out?   Shrug Lol I guess I am an avid gamer?  Bigsmile

After being sorely disappointed with Battlefield 3 (which I'm thawing, ever so slightly to; at least in campaign mode) I plunked down some fundage for MW3 a couple of weeks ago.   Thus, mission ops as follows:

0530 Reveille.  Secure eggs and bacon to ensure caloric value is met for subsequent platoon operations
0545 Outdoor K9 recon activities commence
0600 Outdoor K9 activities conclude
0630 Mess prep for offspring; convey offspring to basic training facilities
0700 Provide affection to spousal unit prior to commencement of her mission
0730 Load up K9 unit and transport to animal medical facility for dental cleaning
0800 Depart animal medical facility and proceed immediately to local GameStop to secure 1ea copy of MW3
0815 Proceed immediately from GameStop to CZA (Couch Zone Alpha)
0830 Once at CZA, engage enemy troops until ~1600hrs local
1630 Redeploy to K9 animal medical facility and secure family K9 unit; return to home base
1700 Stand by for further orders form CINCHOUSE

Other than the campers all those other items do nothing but add lag to an online game. If I were playing on a LAN I would love a 12 v 12 with a destructible environment but on the internet fighting some kid on his BS ISP connection on BF3 is not my cup of tea.

Camping is a strategy and I have no problem finding them and killing them.  Lol I spot camp. I sit for 10 seconds and move on, always keeping an eye on whats going on around me and my team. Its the only way to win any FPS.
