Saw this commercial this weekend and LMAO.
I think only gamers will get it the humor in it. And it must have cost them some serious $$$$$ to get those stars. No wonder these games cost so damn much these days. I still haven't played MW2 on PC because for over a year after it was released everyone wanted full retail for it. Ummmmm....no.

Seems no matter how hard I try, I will always suck at these games. Oh I'm pretty good in single player, but get me online and I die faster than a carnival goldfish.

Nope, there is COD Elite service but no you don't have to pay to play the game.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Call_of_Duty:_Elite
Call of Duty: Elite is a free/subscription-based service created by Beachhead Studios for the multiplayer portion of Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Much like Bungie.net and Battle.net, the service will feature lifetime statistics across multiple games as well as a multitude of social-networking options.[1] It was announced initially by the Wall Street Journal and was showcased at E3 2011 by Activision.[2] The subscription based portion of Elite is priced at $49.99 USD per year for all the free features including exclusive premium features such as monthly downloadable content, daily competitions with virtual and real life prizes, the ability to level up your clan, pro analysis and strategies, Elite TV, and more.[3]
Call of Duty: Elite will have a console app for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game. The console app will allow users to access Call of Duty: Elite on their consoles.[4] Elite will also have a mobile app which will allow users to access Call of Duty: Elite on their smartphones such as the iPhone and the Android.[5] Elite will also have Facebook integration which will allow users with Facebook accounts to see their Facebook friends when they come online to any Call of Duty title and will allow them to invite their friends to a lobby from the Facebook app.[6] The public beta was released on July 14, 2011 on the Xbox 360 exclusively for Black Ops. Invites for the PS3 version began being sent out on September 19, 2011. To get into the beta, users would sign up at the Call of Duty: Elite website, after which they would be emailed telling them that they had been accepted. The beta ended on October 18, 2011, however, Activision stated that "Players can be confident that all beta activity carries over when Call of Duty: Elite officially launches on November 8th."[7]

Jeep built a Black Ops Edition as well. People need to realize there is more money in gaming than movies. Its huge, way bigger than you would think.
Black Ops commercial for those that missed it.

Black Ops brought in $650 million dollars the first few days after launch in 2010. MW2 brought in $550 million the year before that (in just five days). Will be interesting to see what MW3 does.
If the pace continues these three games will have brought in $1.9 billion dollars in just 15 days of retail sales.

I fully realize it as I've been a gamer for 30 years. I still haven't bought in to the value of some of these games. For example: Portal 2 cost me $55 at launch ( I believe). Took me 6 hours to finish it. That's $9.20 per hour in value. That's equivalent to paying $18.40 for a 2 hr movie ticket. Portal 2 should have been priced at $30 IMO.
Some of these games are REALLY priced wrong, and it's because they have to pay for insane advertising and development.
It's very rare that I buy games brand new anymore. They just aren't worth it.

True, Gears of War 3 was one that left me feeling ripped off. I took a gamble seeing how the developer had TWO years to get it right. How could it be a bad game? I paid $60 for it, played it for two weeks. I did get $40 for it on trade in though. Games like COD will also require downloadable content over its lifespan. I have about $100 into Black Ops but I have probably 400+ hours into playing it. That makes it pretty cheap.

Its not the advertising. Video game rollouts are big but the launch publicity is nothing compared big movies. Video games cost $59.95 because that is what the market will pay.
Say a game company spends $20 million or more (the promotion budget for a summer blockbuster film) to promoted a game that will bring in $400 million. That advertising and promotion budget isn't affecting the retail price of the game.
The gaming industry keeps getting bigger and I doubt prices are going to drop.

60 bucks for a new game which is full of bugs kills me. I'll wait for prices to drop and the inevitable patches.
Any recommendations for a good 'ol run and gun first person shooter like Quake3? I'm tired of teams, leveling up, and having to configure my weapons. Just give me a rocket launcher, the railgun and I'm a happy camper!

I look at it this way. If I spend $60 on a game and spend 20 hours playing it, that is $3 an hour. Then I usually mail the game to my son (in college, although in the case of MW3 my son has already pre-ordered it too). These days even going to see a movie costs me about $10 per person. So I figure $3 or so an hour for some entertainment isn't a bad deal. Typically I buy games after they've been out a while, and some games I have spend much more time on and I'm not what most would call an avid gamer. Besides, what else and I going to do when I'm not riding?

Yeah I just had my son look up our stats. We both spent about 600 hours each playing Black Ops.
Oh well we do not have any TV shows that we watch and neither of us watch sports so I guess it all evens out?
I guess I am an avid gamer?

After being sorely disappointed with Battlefield 3 (which I'm thawing, ever so slightly to; at least in campaign mode) I plunked down some fundage for MW3 a couple of weeks ago. Thus, mission ops as follows:
0530 Reveille. Secure eggs and bacon to ensure caloric value is met for subsequent platoon operations
0545 Outdoor K9 recon activities commence
0600 Outdoor K9 activities conclude
0630 Mess prep for offspring; convey offspring to basic training facilities
0700 Provide affection to spousal unit prior to commencement of her mission
0730 Load up K9 unit and transport to animal medical facility for dental cleaning
0800 Depart animal medical facility and proceed immediately to local GameStop to secure 1ea copy of MW3
0815 Proceed immediately from GameStop to CZA (Couch Zone Alpha)
0830 Once at CZA, engage enemy troops until ~1600hrs local
1630 Redeploy to K9 animal medical facility and secure family K9 unit; return to home base
1700 Stand by for further orders form CINCHOUSE

Other than the campers all those other items do nothing but add lag to an online game. If I were playing on a LAN I would love a 12 v 12 with a destructible environment but on the internet fighting some kid on his BS ISP connection on BF3 is not my cup of tea.
Camping is a strategy and I have no problem finding them and killing them.
I spot camp. I sit for 10 seconds and move on, always keeping an eye on whats going on around me and my team. Its the only way to win any FPS.

Well it only took them 9 tries but this one is good right out of the box. Online game play is better than all first released (none patched) Call of Duty games to date. In fact I didn't see anything that needed to change last night. They allow quick scope-ing but that is an Infinity Ward thing. Obviously someone at the company higher up thinks its "cool" but in all honestly has no place in a FPS combat simulator like COD. But that's just my opinion.
The artwork is great, much less cartoony and more realistic looking compared to Black Ops. Hit detection is good both shooting and getting shot at. Grenades and Tubes have reduced damage which is good since often Black Ops would turn into a Tube Fest. I like the way you "earn" upgrades for your weapon by using it and getting kills vs in Black Ops you earned "COD Points" and purchased upgrades.
I give this game
fo sho. Go Get-em nOObs....

hey, question for you game enthusiasts -
how often do you rent games?
And after you rent them, are you done with them forever?
What's the motivation for buying versus renting?
Reading UFO's post, it seems like it would make a helluva a lot of sense to jsut rent some of these games once or twice (for a week tops?) and be done with them.
My daughter was suggesting we get an Xbox 360 for Christmas. We've already got a Wii and a PS2, both of which haven't been played hardly at all over the past year. I think we've grown out of the Wii (or lost interest in the games available). We are really only clinging on to the PS2 for Rock Band, and becuase we probably can't sell it for squat.

The way I see it...COD set the standard....BF3 Set a new standard.
Until COD gets destructible environments...truly persistent environments, it will always be behind BF3.
The graphics look great....but hiding behind a table to protect you from a RPG? Come on COD....get REAL (literally)

That is THE most irritating thing about the COD series. I can hide behind an ordinary card table and save my ass from a misplaced RPG or Grenade shot but if some joker 300 yards away with a MP5 (9mm) shoots at me he will gain hits which will eventually kill me.
The guys at both Tryarc and Infinity Ward screw up this ballistics thing all the time. How is it I can get shot through a two foot thick concrete wall with someone packing a M16 yet I cant shoot through the same wall for a .50 sniper rifle? How can someone with a M9 pistol take me out with a 400 yard shot while I an pumping 308 rounds into him from a SCAR-H? And the worst one of all, how does someone run up to me and knife me after I pump six rounds into his chest and neck from an AK-47? I'm my opinion if they would work on these small details the game would otherwise be perfect.

I didn't buy it. I'm still waiting for MW2 to drop below $20.

Tips for a better game
Run a M4 (or a SCAR, ACR or G-36) with a ACOG (or red dot) and a silencer, use the XM 25 as your secondary weapon. When using the XM dial in the range by clicking down on the left joystick then fire no less then three rounds at every target.
Run these perks
Blind Eye
Assassin
Sit Rep
Use kill streaks you can easily obtain (UAV, Predator, SAM, etc). Always hit the B button to lay down when you reload. Crouch a lot and pay attention to whats going on around you. Turn up your volume so you can hear people sneaking up behind you. Walk mostly crouched, avoid confrontation with overwhelming odds (you will not win).
Spot camp, sit in an area for 5 or 10 seconds and move on (look around, check your radar). If you get a kill move 20 feet away and wait for him to come back, 90% chance he will. Kill him again and tea bag him then move on.
And the best advice I have for playing this game? Stop RUNNING around and charging in to fight. Walk everywhere except when you need to run.
If you do this and stick with it you will go positive eventually and once you get the feel for this kind of fighting you will go positive almost all the time. If your whole team does it you will win most every game.

I'll be on tonight.
Good games yesterday. You were pretty much playing with me and my family there for a while. Ajax and Handler (21 and 23 yrs old) are my sons and Giakaette is my daughter (12 yrs old) and BalrogTheRed is my brother. We have a pretty brutal family clan eh?
I have my daughters account set so she cannot hear anyone but me and her brothers so no worries if you slip up and say something inappropriate. Seemed like the more we played the better your KD got? We don't win every game but we give just about everyone a decent challenge.
In my tips above I forgot to mention how important flash bangs are. Not sure if you noticed but we flashed almost every room or corner we came too. When the flash goes off you will get a hit detector is there is an enemy near by. Then you can warn your team mates.

Awesome games last night.
I have a mic but my wife was sleeping next to me so i didnt turn it on. I liked following you around and the team always said where they were and where the other team was. If more people did that they would be able to kick ass too. I'll be on again later tonight. Wife is working :-)

So I picked up MW3 yesterday since I"m off all week. Finished the single player already. Yep, it's MW2 with new weapons and maps. I didn't see a lot of new stuff to get all excited over unless it's all stuffed into multiplayer. I'll be trying that out tonight and see if I can break my previous record for amount of deaths.

Heh, I was 10 & 2. I still can't figure out how I can be pumping M4 rounds into a guy that just won't die, but one shot from him and I'm toast. I have plenty of bandwidth and no lag.

unload a full clip into the guy and he kills you with a single pistol shot? That would be standard mode. Once you get to level 16 or so, you can start playing hard core and things start to work correctly. Still not perfect, but a much better playing experience in my opinion.

+1 for Hard Core mode. It's a better game for sure.
Tried my luck with special ops survival mode last night. Found an online player that was WAY better than I was, he carried me to level 19 twice.
If the noise is a problem at home, get a set of Turtle Beach headphones, they make gameplay much better and the SO can sleep like a baby (in between my outbursts of profanity!)

Its the outbursts of profanity that wake her up lol. I have the Turtle Beachs, LOVE THEM!
Hardcore mode is the only mode I play now that I've leveled up enough.
In standard mode its like the game gives you rubber bullets and the other guy some .50 cal rounds. And I think some people just plain cheat.
