Well it's that time of year, time to plan out the WCRM.  Bigok
At the last WCRM it was adopted that all in attendance had a vote on the next years WCRM location. Sonora was chosen as this years location. If you wish to vote on the 2013 location just attend the 2012 WCRM.

This years meet will be in the Sonora area on the weekend of June 9th & 10th. (exact location still in flux I will update this post when an exact location has been chosen)

The general location is Sonora CA, If you have a favorite hotel or know of one please post in. Hotel will be chosen by general agreement (maybe even a poll Crazy)
Keep in mind that some of us are cheap bastards (speaking of myself there) so the Ritz may not work for all of us. Camping close by is always a plus. Proximity to a place to eat/drink is a Big Plus.

Let the planning begin  Bigok

P.S.
If you plan on being there Please join in and be a part of it.
If you don't plan on attending (track day, cleaning tooth brush, washing the dog, what have you) please don't F up this for everyone else.

OMG I love Sonora.  Will probably be incredibly otherwise occupied in early June, however.

Any reconnaissance required for this mission, I'm more than happy to take on.  Inlove Inlove

Also....I'll repost this from the other thread, though I agree, it may be a bit pricey unless we can fanagle a group rate out of them...

---------

The Best Western Sonora Oaks Hotel is well regarded at Tripadvisor.com, and you have to like any motel that shows photos of their hotel with bikes in front of it!  Bigok

May be a little spendy though....I'm seeing $100/night for that weekend.

I'm mapping out a to-do list to go exploring in the area....maybe as early as next weekend:

1. Reasonable accommodations
2. Food nearby (brewpub type of place?)
3. Ideally, camping nearby
4. Great roads nearby (a given in that neck of the woods)

What else?

One thing to keep in mind...there's a 50/50 chance the passes will still be closed that weekend. It all depends on how heavy the winter snowfall is. I've seen years where everything was open by mid-May, and other years where they struggled to get the passes open by the 4th of July.

But there are plenty of awesome foothill routes below the snowline if we run into that issue. I'll spend some time working out routes for both scenarios.

If the passes are open, I'm envisioning an northern loop option (108 to 395 North, lunch at Walker Burger, then 89 to 88 to 49 and back to Sonora), and a southern loop option (108 to 395 South, lunch at the Whoa Nellie Deli, through Yosemite on 120, to 49 and back to Sonora).

Loops through the foothills are endless. I'll put together some options there as well. Even if the passes are open, this route could be for those who want a more leisurely pace that doesn't cover 9,000 foot mountain passes and narrow, tight twisty roads.

Of course, I might end up being the only person on that route.   Lol

Forgive me if I'm stepping on toes. If so, I'll gladly step back. I've just been wanting to attend one of these since 2005, and this is the first time I'm going to get a chance to take part....and it's in an area I pretty much grew up in.  Thumbsup

Hi Andrew,
It's been awhile since I've visited the board, but in the course of perusing the various links, I came across the link for next year's WCRM,
and I think I might me able to make it.  The days you have set are June 9/10, but wondering if anyone might be showing up early?
Like on Thursday or Friday?  I usually work on Sunday's, so I might head up to Sonora on Thursday afternoon and then head out Saturday
afternoon, but no biggie, I could still see some old friends on Friday night.
Hope to see you in June!

Yes Friday is a good day to show up, that's when I will be arriving at least.

In past years most arrived in Fortuna on Friday, road Saturday and returned home on Sunday. Seems like a good way to enjoy a weekend to me.

For me, from the Bay Area, arriving Friday means I can beat the "Friday end of work week" traffic and still get in some time up i the hills in the same day.

Sounds good, it'll be nice seeing you again...it's been a few years since I was at a WCRM.
We (the wife and I) may even come up on Thursday and get settled in and do a bit of riding on Friday before everyone starts showing up.
Really looking forward to it!   Bigok

Camping?

The only nice campgrounds I know of around  Sonora are on New Melones Lake maybe 8 to 10 miles from Sonora.  There are two camping areas on or near the lake. They are the Glory Hole area and Tuttletown area.  I've stayed at the campground at Gloryhole, ironically called Ironhorse.  It's a very nice campground closer to Angels Camp than Sonora.  Tuttletown is maybe 8 miles from Sonora and very large with many different campgrounds within it's boundaries, including two group camping sites (group camping meet anyone?)

New Melones Lake, links:
http://www.usbr.gov/mp/ccao/newmelones/photo_gallery/index.html
http://www.usbr.gov/mp/ccao/newmelones/camping.html

There is one little RV and tent camping park in Sonora that I know of and it's at the Fair grounds called the "Mother Lode Fair & R.V. Park"
link:
http://www.tcvb.com/showrecord.asp?id=357

The Fair grounds are only a couple blocks from downtown on Hwy 49 at Southgate Drive. I don't know much about the campground, someone want to go a check it out?

Also, there is a motel across Hwy 49 from the Fairgrounds maybe a 5 minute walk from the campground called the "Gold Lodge"  prices are around $60 a night.
Here is a link to the Gold Lodge motel and some pics......
http://www.goldlodge.com/

One last thing.... there is an RV park with camping cabins and lodges that sleep 6 and tent camping but it's close to Angels Camp and it's called "Angels Camp RV" link....

While I didn't make this years meet, I would have voted for Arnold . .......Hwy 4, not too far from Sonora.

It has the :

I think there may be a snow shoe brewing outside of Sonora also.  But Sonora is a real zoo on weekends.........too many cagers & ridgerunners...................

and other lodging places plus campers could stay at   Big Trees state park.
Here's a link to a motel close to the brewpub:

I've stayed at the Best Western and it's good property.  However, you'll have to ride into town for dinner, etc.  The Gold Country is a fair walk.

I've stayed at The Inns of California and the Days Inn.  Nothing "special", but a block or two to all the local eateries/bars, etc.

Arnold is awesome, and there's some nice, cheap lodging there as well...

http://www.timberlinelodge.info/

http://arnoldblackbearinn.com/

http://www.arnoldlodgeca.com/ - this one gets my vote. The owner, Pam, is wonderful!!

And one of my favorite places to eat...

http://www.giantburger.net/

We also won't have the weekend crowds that Sonora deals with.

And, there are some killer goat trails and out of the way roads in the area....

BUT.....

Weather and snow levels will be a crapshoot in early June, and it's highly unlikely that Ebbetts Pass will be open by then.

On the other hand, Hwy 4 (IMO) offers some of the Sierra's best riding.  Inlove

Honestly, they are all within 45 minutes or so of each other. It's kind of like the difference between Fortuna, Eureka, Arcata and Trinidad - same general area, just slightly different locales. I've always considered it all to be the "Gold Country" area. It's probably smart to check out all of the surrounding areas (Sonora, Murphys, Angels Camp, Arnold, etc.) to try and find the best combination of good cheap rooms and good cheap eats. The roads to ride will likely be 95% the same no matter which locale we choose as a home base.

I'll try to get up that way in the next few weeks to have a good look around.

As far as a bulk room rate from Pam, I'll give it a shot. How many rooms have been requested in past years for this purpose?

Well, since you have it narrowed down to the Sonora "area", here's my 2 cents.
Sutter Creek...great hotels, restaurants, bars, shopping, etc.  Great location, cool town.
Central to everything...just saying.

From their website..."Sutter Creek is Amador County’s most walkable town with B&Bs, restaurants, and shops all along the main street."

For the wine connoisseurs, downtown tasting rooms:

I spend 75% of my time now in Amador County about 10 miles ( as the crow flies.......20-25  minutes on a bike) from Sutter Creek .

I don't think it would be a good place to base a meet at.
a. very expensive
b. no camping close  and motels bring a premium price.
c. cops are brutal
d. very busy on "nice" weekends  with people visiting the Shenandoah wine country.

Once again, I think Arnold is a better location.......

"Sonora" area.

Aren't you cleaning your comb that weekend anyway?

It actually does end up conflicting with a race weekend in Oregon....but I might just skip it.  Depends.

So, is there a hotel for me to NOT make a reservation at?

The Arnold Meadowmont looks like a great place for bullshitting around bikes. The Snowshoe looks like a good place for bullshitting around beers. AND they're in walking distance? I wouldn't go there for sure!

A vote for Arnold and the Meadowmont Lodge here.  Smile

Btw....I went over Carson Pass on 88 this weekend. December 19th, and it was dry and clear with less than a foot of snow at 8,500 feet. It's either going to be a really bad year for snowfall, or it's all going to come late and the passes will be closed into July.  Crazy

So what your saying is our odds are 50/50 Bigsmile

Thats about normal, for CA.
In all truth we have been rained on, half frozen most years at the WCRM so at 50/50 I'd say we are batting about norm for the WCRM.

True....as I think about it, last year was truly the oddity, with a whole lot of snow, but a decently early opening for the passes.

88 was totally empty driving home yesterday. It was awesome...the lack of traffic reminded of the many camping trips I took in the Sierra's with my grandfather back in the 70's, when seeing another car was rare enough that you waved at each other as you passed by.  Bigok

Yep I remember the "good old days" Out camping with Mom & Dad, We waved at everyone on the road (weren't many to wave at) Camping in the mountains was what the summer break was about, I thought that's what everyone did. A week in the Yosemite Valley was the norm.

Last year I road 4 all the way on the way to the start of the CAL24, some bits were like riding through a trough (snow high on both sides of the road) but the roads were open and clean.

OK, I went for a ride up the hill yesterday.

The Arnold Medowmont Lodge http://www.arnoldlodgeca.com/Lodging.html  offered $75 or $73  a room if we book 10 rooms. Looks like a decent place and there is the Show Shoe Brewing Co is just across the street   http://www.snowshoebrewing.com/

YA, sorry for the confusion, I stopped by the hotel Sunday and spoke with the young woman at the desk, she said she would talk to the manager and call me back on Monday. I got the call while at work and left the details on a note pad on the desk. THe note pad was tossed out by the next shift or cleaning crew. I believe she said $73 0r $75 (might have been $70 Shrug) still considering the time of year (tourist/vacation time).

THe hotel is small but comfortable. THe layout is in a crescent (four sides with one side being a bit shorter than the others, court yard in the center) design so good place to park the bikes and meet & greet.  Rooms (the two I looked at) were comfortable and clean, nothing fancy or opulent. Did I mention the Brewing CO is right across the street Bigsmile.

Sounds nice (hotel and Brewing CO).  Do you think the Brewery will be able to accommodate all 4 of us as walk-ins or do we need to make reservations?  Headscratch

Call up and make your reservations at the hotel, will not need them at the pub.

I think we had a mis-communication, I was really asking whether we are going to have enough riders to have a WCRM this year.

I think Ray (chillman1971) and I might be in. I'm participating in a century (without a motor! EEK!) in Tahoe on the 3rd. We just might make a vacation out of it.  Smile

Huh.  If things go well, I might just make my first WCRM.  Only 9 hours (non-stop) from Vegas...

The attendance last year was impacted by the proximity of the dates to the national meet, some of us chose to do the national instead of the wcrm.  I won't be having that problem this year.

Yes, There is a better way.  575 miles to Alturas via Chinook Pass, US 97 to Bend, OR 31 to Lakeview, 395 to Alturas.

Second day 360 miles of twisty stuff to Arnold via SR139 to Susanville, backroads to Crescent Mills, SR 89 all the way to Donner Pass, South Tahoe, until SR 4 into Arnold.

I'm probably leaving Thursday morning.  Other option is to leave Wednesday afternoon and re-plan the whole route.

395 through Oregon is a very good road once you get south of Pilot Rock and if you feel the need for speed......Riley to Lakeview isn't scenic but it is wide open.

With my fella. We're spending the previous weekend plus a couple of days camping in Tahoe for my century. He's going to be heading straight back after. Depending on my employment situation at the time, I may take the scenic route home.  Bigsmile

I'm going to check my vacation time. Maybe I can make it. Hell, I haven't even really looked at where Sonora is on the map. Is it by Baker City Oregon?  Bigsmile

There's a preview session for my master's degree the same weekend. I'm not going to be able to make it after all. Sad

Hopefully there is some other meet happening later this summer that I can get to.  I'll make sure I bring down some of Uncle Gibbies finest!
