Great post! Thanks for sharing.

I couldn't help but notice most of those towns looked pretty desolate.

Enlarged.  Doesn't look so.

As you might imagine, standing in the middle of the road does attact a certain amount of attention (I'm also wearing an aerostich roadcrafter).  On just a few occasions, a brave citizen will step up to me to ask what I'm doing and who I am, but it always ends well.

I've been to Chapman - when you're driving along the highway and see a sign with your name and an arrow you just have to take that exit.

That was 4th July 1984 and it doesn't look to have changed much since.

Beautiful. What great character those old towns have.  And what straight roads they have, too..and flat.

Daniel,
Love the photos! I grew up about 5 miles east of Baxter Springs, just inside Missouri. (Mis)spent many nights in Baxter Springs during my adolescent years. You have inspired me to attempt the same activity in Arkansas.

Neat middle-America Main Street USA photos.

That said, I'd blow my fricken brains out if I lived there. Not for me.
Kansas and the eastern side of Colorado was the worst drive I've ever been on in my life.

You've added Chanute since my original post.  My daughter-in-law is from there.  Was hoping for West Mineral on the 'w'!

Always good.
