Peter asked me to find a place for him to get the frame of the V-Strom checked. We want to get the bike back in good condition over the winter (it runs just fine but has quite a bit of cosmetic boo boos from his tangle with the minivan in July).
Is this something any competent mechanic can do, or does it need special tools/etc?
Anyone know of a good place to take it?

Try Evolution Suspension. They are or used to be GMD Computrak center. I know they do frame geometry and plenty of other services. I've never heard anything but praise for them.
