Rides

Must do roads around Eureka Springs - http://www.sport-touring.net/forums/index.php/topic,68602.msg1599985.html#msg1599985

Routes from the 2008 National - http://www.sport-touring.net/forums/index.php/topic,25600.0.html
Anyone offering to lead a ride?

Garmin Mapsource files on Rocketbunny's Server http://www.rocketbunny.net/uploads/cstn07/AR-MO-Loops.gdb

(borrowed from ADV)

There are no official rides for the Arkansas 2012
We have individuals who go on rides and welcome you to ride along.
No part of your attendance fee has anything to do with any rides.
All riders are responsible for their own actions.
Above all, ride safe.

Please do not post descriptions of other people's rides.
Instead, all ride questions should be referred back to this page (page one) for the list of ride links which contain all info.

STANDARD RIDE RULES:

Your ride leader may choose to use these standardized rules, OR his own

1. Please show up to your ride with a full gastank.

2. Please show up to your ride at least ten minutes before departure time.

3. In order to avoid delays during the ride:
a. No passing others in the group regardless of whether they are moving or standing still. If the rider in front of you stops, YOU STOP WITH HIM. That means that everyone behind you will stop too!
(Suppose the rider in front of you slows down because his bike is breaking down. If you continue past him, the leaders see you coming and procede further and further from the problem. Confusion like this makes for a long day). If the stopped rider has broken down, the leaders will return shortly.
b. If you want to swap places in line, please do so during a stop.
c. If you want to split early/mid-ride, stop and tell the sweep what you are doing so we don't spend time looking for you (and make sure you have the maps to find your way back to camp).

4. Ride at your own pace:
NEVER try to catch up to riders in front of you. Continue straight ahead. Someone will be waiting for you at the next left or right turn.

5. Safety:
Please leave plenty of room between yourself and the rider in front of you. When he has to slam on his brakes, he doesn't need you crashing into the back of him and ruining EVERYONE's day. Also, there is nothing worse than having to change the way you ride all day because of what's going on in your mirror. If a rider keeps getting too close behind you, flash your brake lights repeatedly as a reminder to BACK OFF.

6. Tire repair:
a. All riders with tubed tires should carry a spare tube the size of their largest diameter tubed tire,
(NOT just a tube patch kit, which takes longer).
b. All riders with tubeless tires should carry a plug kit.
c. Bring tire-pump if you've got one.

7. Cash:
Carry cash for gas please. Rural gas stations often do NOT take credit/debit cards.

8. No whining.

THE RIDES (so far)

Will be updated....

Any others?
Post your ride anywhere on this thread,
then PM me the post# so I can link you in.

Food - UPDATE - 2/2/2012

Tuesday night dinner - Local Flavor Cafe - Self Pay - (Not included in Registration Fee)

Take a look at this menu.   Inlove

http://www.localflavorcafe.net/menus/dinner.pdf

I am negotiating a limited menu for full dinner service for around $20 a head including a non alcoholic beverage.  (Cash beer/liquor bar)  This is one of the top rated haunts in the area.  Not your average bar food.  Bring money since you will pay for your own meal at Local Flavor.  They won't take a group rate prepaid ahead of time.

Tuesday night we shall convene on Local Flavor Cafe for our meal.   It will be fine dining for a very decent price.  Set a spell and talk with your socially isolated computer cohorts.  Smile, laugh, be merry.   This will be casual and enjoyable for everyone. Family friendly!  When we get back to the Rodeway later that night, I'll raffle off some swag for the masses.

Wednesday night will be the big prize night.   I'm planning on having Bubba's BBQ provide a FULL slab of ribs for EACH person at the Rodeway Inn around back at their backyard grill area.  If weather sucks, I'll request the conference room.   Beer and such is on you.  Funds permitting, I'll make a beer run for dinner to supplement the libations.

Yes, I said a full slab of ribs.

 Drool Drool Drool Drool

I will prepay for Bubba's ahead of time since they need to prep that much meat for us.  It will add $20 bucks to the registration cost but it will be SOOO WORTH IT.  There is a reason why Arkansas is known for their meat.  You'll discover why on Wednesday night!!  Beerchug

Pony up for the flavor guys and register today!

Probably won't make this after all. Due to schedule "challenges" at work (note: my group is on-time), they are discontinuing the "9/80" alternate work schedule (every other Friday off) for everyone working on any aspect of the project. It's probably not wise to blow all my moto vacation days (5) for the year on one long trip versus using them for long weekends when the weather is good.

Base of operations motel has not been finalized but I'm leaning towards Rodeway inn if I don't hear a reply from Edlewiess.  I'll keep you guys informed once I get a group rate.

I did a test run with Wepay.com and it was terrible.  They want to verify every transaction that is incoming from each new payee.  Meaning I can't do anything with your payment until the payee calls them AFTER you pay with a credit card.  What a bullhonkey setup for efficiency.

I'm leaning towards paypal and/or personal check.

I would vote PayPal unless you're comfortable taking an electronic check. I haven't written a paper check in years. I don't know if I even have any.

I have to stipulate that if Paypal is used, there will be a fee charge passed on to you the entree.  Just the cost of convenience.  If someone else writes me a check and it doesn't show up for whatever reason, they'll have to take it up with the USPS.

If I try to be sneaky and bypass paypal fees, the whole event could be compromised if the funds are seized.  I don't know if I can receive funds to paypal via an 'electronic check'.  Never done it but I'll investigate.

Tough choice.

The Edelweiss is cheaper, but about 0.35 miles up the road...not easy walking distance.  Headscratch

As Google maps states,  it will take you 8 minutes to walk that far.  That distance has to be good for burning off at least 1/2 a beer. (1/8th of a Canadian beer)

As Google maps states,  it will take you 8 minutes to walk that far.  That distance has to be good for burning off at least 1/2 a beer. (1/8th of a Canadian beer)

Yes, but you're missing the dilemma....walking 0.3 miles or saving $20+ bucks a night.  Lol Embarassment

just as well get the route party going so here we go!!

Missouri:125 and 160 east of Branson - both of these are awesome, 86, 112 and 90 west of Branson

Arkansas: take 23 north out of Eureka Springs to 86 in Missouri up to Cassville then back down 37 to Washburn then 90 west to Noel and back. 86 and 90 are fabulous.  Missouri 86 and 90 are like a roller coaster and 90 is one of my top-10 road.

Take 62 east out of E.S. to Berryville to 21 south all the way down to Clarksville then take 123 back north to 74 to Jasper (eat there on square) to 43 to 21 and back up. This is one of my favorite loops.

These are MUST RIDE roads in the NW Arkansas area: 7,14,16,21,23,43 74,123,125,143, 221,311,341

I have ridden all of these roads many times. Any secondary road you take out of Eureka Springs, Berryville, Harrison, Jasper will be excellent.   Stay north of I-40 in Arkansas for the best riding.

I'm  booked in a two double-bed room at the Rodeway Inn for Mon. - Wed. nights.  I took a smoking room to stay on the east wing and down stairs.

When I was booking, Dakota asked me, "So, what kind of bikes do you guys ride?"  I told him we aren't brand-specific but our mission is to travel great distances at high speeds.  He also commented that he was getting reservations for our group from all over.   Thumbsup

I'm already feeling that nervous anticipation that comes before hitting the road.

That ain't no joke!
There will be classically trained musicians staying at the Rodeway Inn for the whole month of June for a music conference!  A little bird says we might have live entertainment for our stay at Rodeway.  Wink

Cablebandit and I are keeping this on our radar.  There's a possibility that I'll have to travel to Denver in July for a conference; if that happens, we'll skip the National and make a ride out of my conference trip.  Otherwise, we'd both really like to make the National this year.

Just got off the phone with Local Flavor Cafe.

Beerchug

I'll let you guys know in a new thread when STN registration is open!   Coming SOON!!!!

Leon dear, you have to read Mac's whole 'disclaimer'. It's a Magritte joke.   Wink

O.K.  I had to do some research to see who or what the heck is a Magritte.  At first I thought it was a bad spelling of the word "marguerite".  The funny part for me is that I learned something about "Magritte" the surrealist Belgian artist because of an ST.N.Net thread regarding the National in Arkansas.     Smile

Pertinent needs will change as the event approaches but, the biggest need for volunteers will be manpower Tuesday/Wednesday.  Cat herding, raffle, check in, and reconnoitering restaurants to name a few.   You never know what spontaneity might arise after dinner.  A heads up to a certain business might be helpful.  ATGATT Go-karting??

If someone wants to volunteer to lead a ride.  PLEASE do us all a favor and pre-ride the route.....

I'll repeat this again closer to game day. If a ride group swells to over 20 riders, please split the groups.   Big group rides are not fun.

Don't be afraid to raise your hand and let people know your riding style and desire for the day.  You'll only offend your riding buddy by not being honest with them or yourself.  Trust me.  Seen it happen. It gets ugly and contributes to someone going home in a truck dragging their broken ride home.

I mainly stick to these restaurants when I am in town: The Squid & The Whale, The Cat House, The Local Flavor, and Spankys.  Hotel/motels that I can vouch for are: The Lookout Lodge & The New Orleans Hotel.  The New Orleans is in the downtown district, you'll pay a little more for staying downtown but it's always worth it to me.  The Lookout Lodge is a great place, although the owner did threaten to call the police on my group.  I doubt this group will be as rowdy as my old Marine Corps Co reunion.  Places to camp are the KOA and The Kettle Campground.  The KOA is a little drive from town, and the Kettle Campground has some small cabins as well.

Two rooms booked at the Rodeway for June 19th and 20th.

The plan right now is for me and three other Canucks who are not members of ST.N to go.

The four of us went down as far as Deals Gap last year on a two week trip.  We are still on talking terms  Lol and they want more.   Bigok

There could be some issues with two of them related to work and the homefront but hopefully everything can be ironed out.

I just joined your group, and although I'd really like to make this rally, I'm already committed to 3 bike trips this year and like eveyone else, time and money are limited.

I've ridden Arkansas many times and I know my way around there pretty good.  I'm leaving for 5 days in the Ozarks on Thursday.  I'm no expert, but I've ridden about 40K miles all over the south and east and IMO, Arkansas is prolly the best kept motorcycling secret.  Just about any road North of I-40 is good, and if you stay West of Hwy 67, you can close your eyes, pitch a dart on the map, and no matter where it lands, the ride will be great.  Even the county roads are in great shape.  Unlike North Carolina/Tennessee/Georgia, the tree line along the Arkansas roads is cut back at least 50 feet from the shoulder (and in most cases farther).  This gives the rider an excellent view of the entire curve before the apex.  That makes for some fantastic twisty riding.

In addition to the above, South of I-40 is the Mt. Magazine road (hwy 309, aka "The Little Dragon") that leads you to the infamous Talimena Highway.  From where you are staying, that would be a very ambitious day trip (although doable if you leave early).  However, for those coming in from the South or West, by all means, do not pass up an opportunity to detour through that area on your way to or from the rally.

I plan to post a ride report upon my return.  I'll also have google maps showing where I went.

At this rate, it looks like we are going to have a flood of last minute folks jumping in.

If we don't, you guys will most likely go home with some kick ass swag.   I can't make the location any more attractive.

ESTN, WCRM, Region 4 meets, etc, etc... all attract people away from making the pilgrimage to a really good meet.

The dinners will be fantastic, the roads curvy and spastic,  how could one sit there and go 'Meh' like a piece of plastic

Money sent for me and two guests.

A third guest is working on resolving a scheduling conflict on the home front.

After looking a SWRiverstone's pictures of southeast Ohio I am getting anxious to go.

Hopefully the interest will pick up now that we are getting closer to the dates.

Nice to see more people throwing their hat into the ring.

I have a t-shirt design on my computer from a very competent artist.   It's coming together folks.

FYI - April 16th - $ entry fee will be $56.00

Also of note -  If you are stuck at the last minute trying to see if that D-bag boss of yours approves your leave,  I will make sure you get everything  you paid for.   Meaning, once I make the T-shirt order May 16th - Anyone who buys in after May 1st, will most likely not have a T-shirt available for the meet.  BUT I will make a point of mailing one to you at no extra charge.   You will recieve your goodie bag and will be entitled to take part in all raffles for prizes.

If you want to donate anything for raffles, have it on hand for the big event Wednesday night.  Just make sure your let me know ahead of time that you have an something to give away.
The one thing I was hoping to include in the raffle was a free hotel room (mon-weds) $$$, but that takes a BIG group to get Rodeway Inn on board with that.

Garry's absolutely right! This is a top drawer event. Eureka Springs is one of the most
motorcycle friendly destination cities in America. Combined with some of the best roads
to be found anywhere and you have the "perfect storm" of a motorcycle rally.
MacGyver efforts should also be acknowledged. He's put together venues and restaurants
that promise to offer a memorable experience.
From someone who's been there: I've been planning on returning to E.S. since the '08 National
and I can't wait to get back.
Yeah, the economy sucks. Yeah, it is  a big deal. And yeah, you should go.

Butler Maps has spent the better part of a month trans versing the roads of the Ozarks this spring.  One of the items I'd like to get included with our goodie bag is a custom Butler map insert for your tankbag.  Think of it as a beta from them. Not the fullblown map but just the good stuff (Which is a lot btw).  Wink

Leon - I look forward to seeing you and meeting new friends. Is Corbeau still active here? That guy added MUCH to the Gonzo content 2 years ago in West Va..
See you all in June !

Looking forward to seeing you again also Dan.

Corbeau usually does a disappearance act during the ski season, only to appear again when it's over.

I might be a last minute addition IF I can convince my new manager (6th one in 3.5 years, sigh) that since they will be offering little/no raise despite my outstanding ratings at work, perhaps a couple weeks of comp time would be a little something to reward me for my hard work in the past year.

Our performance reviews aren't for (at least) another month, maybe even early June. As I said, might be last minute. Keeping fingers crossed...

For those fiscally sensitive (read poor) like myself.  I'm willing to offer the option of no T-shirt but the t-shirt is the coolest item going!

No shirt - $35.00 entry fee ( includes Wednesday dinner service FYI)

I don't need to "share" my room, but if there's a shortage of places to stay and you still want to go, don't be afraid to ask if anyone has room to spare and is willing to share before you decide you can't make it.

Must do roads around Eureka Springs - http://www.sport-touring.net/forums/index.php/topic,68602.msg1599985.html#msg1599985

Routes from the 2008 National - http://www.sport-touring.net/forums/index.php/topic,25600.0.html
Anyone offering to lead a ride?

Garmin Mapsource files on Rocketbunny's Server http://www.rocketbunny.net/uploads/cstn07/AR-MO-Loops.gdb

I am volunteering to ask for permission to cross post the work that STN has done to make these route maps available.  The COG National takes place right before the STN National.  Some COG members might be staying around for STN but I cannot.

So do any STN members mind that COG reference this work and post up links to this helpful info?

I for one appreciate the sharing of GPX files of good roads in an unfamiliar area.

Thanks in advance,
Matt

I was just up in that area last weekend and a great ride. In one way I  like the sounds of the Butler maps, and in another way I don't.

I rode my favorite road in the whole area on Saturday. On the first segment I saw 0 cars and 0 motorcycles. On the second segment I met one on coming car. I am hoping that a fancy map doesn't make area get too crowded. Deal's Gap used to be fun now it is way to crowded and there is way too much LEO presence for it to be fun.

Confirmed!!

Tracy Brasuell, of Butler Maps will be on site to give first hand knowledge of the Ozarks and answer any questions.

Maps will be available for retail sale ( special goodie two shoes  pricing ).

Is anyone interested in the Backcountry Discovery Route Maps that have just been created?  (Utah and Washington)
