Went water skiing here today.

No joke. It hasn't been cold for more than a day or two so far.

Ok, I was joking about the water skiing.

We have a goodly amount of snow here, but unlike the last couple of years it hasn't come down in a big, nasty, unmanageable dump - yet...  Once that happens the front of our house is rather hard to keep shovelled out.

So, yes, it feels pretty darned wintery here!

Merry Christmas to all my friends on St.n !  Hope next year is the best riding EVAR !

Driving out West of Edmonton today, looking at the farmer's fields, thinking how sparse the snow is.

We've got more northwest of the city, and at higher elevations, but still not that much.

The past couple of weeks' mild temps have pretty much flattened all the snow we got in November.

Little dribble of snow a couple of weeks ago... Just enough to make all the nutters drive crazy and fall off roads. Then it all melted away and we've had nothing but rain since.
Did the horrible thing this afternoon and washed the baby and tucked 'er in under her blankie with her favorite battery tender... sigh... Sad

Oh well, Merry Christmas all, I predict a short winter. Sorry snowmobiler buddies!! Shrug

Freezing rain over here. Had a bit of white stuff last week but it's all gone now.
And we have this stupid law that says you need winter tires between Dec 15 and March 15.
The roads were dry last weekend with +6°C temps but we can't ride.  Sad

Anyone has MC winter tires?  Headscratch

Does that apply to motorcycles?  How's the law worded?  Snow tires aren't made for heavy trucks so it must allow them to stay operating.  A Ural would be a relatively safe winter motorcycle in Quebec's weather.  Barring that, Can Am Spyders have standard car sized rim, so you could mount studded snow tires if you wanted.

Yep, it applies to all road going vehicle. There is an exception list for vehicles that don't or can't have winter tires, like heavy machinery, farm equipment, etc. The then minister of transport had promised to add motorcycles to that list. However, she never did. Just in case someone may go out and injure themselves. It doesn't matter that in the 20 years the government has been running the insurance society (the SAAQ) there has been only one motorcycle related death recorded during the winter months. That person died while riding in Florida.
It's not like we would be stupid enough to ride when the roads are slick or anything but just in case, we might as well have a law...

On the bright side, it's all white outside. We'll have a white Christmast after all!  Smile  Banana

Yup...snowing this morning, which is the day we're supposed to drive to Osoyoos to spend the holidays with some friends (actually, my wife's friends...I'd as soon stay home and go skiing...).

And, supposed to warm up next week, so by the time we return, all this nice, fresh powder will have settled down into a big, slushy mess.

Merry Christmas to you John!

A quick drive up to the North Shore could give you that dose of snow I am sure via Cypress.

Still snowing here. We have about 15cm and it is warming up fast. Hope it lasts through tomorrow.

Well, Happy New Year to all!

Drive safe.  Last Wednesday, I met a guy who wasn't...

We walked away, a bit bruised and battered, but upright...

Note the handsome dude standing behind my SUV?--that's Dean, our very own Motrhead here on ST.N--he was going past and stopped to help, waited with us through the paramedics, RCMP interview, etc., and ended up giving me, my dogs, and a whole buncha stuff a ride back to Grand Forks (where my wife had already gone by ambulance).  Several hours out of his day.  Thanks again, Dean!

I would say the car is not repairable. The cost in replacing the air bags would do it before any front end work was figured in. But it has a lot of good parts that will be reused.

I also hope your wife makes a full recovery!

Well, Happy New Year to all!

Drive safe.  Last Wednesday, I met a guy who wasn't...

Holy !   glad you guys came out all right, I drove home from Trail to Elkford Friday night, roads were icy and  slippery on some sections but that didn't make any difference to some idiots, passing where ever, two inches off my bumper some folks just don't get the whole physics thing about friction coefficients

Glad there were no serious injuries Geoff!  Way to go Dean! You meet the nicest folks on St.n !

That looks like it was at the big corner heading out of Christina Lake or up near the Eholt Summit headed West ?

I appreciate the concern folks are showing.

FYI, I seem to be OK, Laura has some injuries and is very sore just now, and both the dogs seem OK.

ICBC estimator hasn't been to see the car yet, but both I and the tow driver are convinced it's a write-off.  Four airbags deployed (side curtain, driver's side, driver's front, passenger's front), the front wheel hub is ripped off, and the chassis is buckled (it's a unibody construction, albeit heavily reinforced).

I took several of photos at the scene, showing the skid marks, tire tracks, impact location, obvious vehicle damage, etc.  ICBC informed me Friday that the other guy is being held completely at fault--I have no idea what charges (if any) may be laid, but I'm sure there will be something (probably "driving too fast for conditions" or similar).

We were coming home from spending Christmas with friends in Osoyoos.  Driving east from Bridesville towards Rock Creek, I saw a small white car approaching around a corner, sliding across the road into my lane.  I braked and headed for the shoulder, but the car collided with our vehicle, and we ended up in the snowbank while the other car ricocheted back across the highway.  They walked too, but had worse injuries than we had.

That's the most important thing!

That's a safe bet.  It's simply an exercise in numbers.  Pro-rated costs for the repairs tallied and weighed against the book value for the vehicle.  Frame tweaking really cuts into that.

Yeah, driving too fast for conditions (or whatever the BC MVA wording is) sounds about right to start.

Holy crap, Geoff!!!  Please make sure Laura knows that ZED & I are thinking of you both.  That really was a "meeting" that you two didn't need.  Many healing thoughts are coming your way...

Holy shite!  Hope your wife recovered okay!!!

Did the other guy get charged?

Yes. Do tell. Is Mrs. Kootenanny alright?

Did you gouge the other drivers heart out with a spoon?

The Mrs. is still off work, she's got a fair bit of pain in her rib cage yet (I can't hug her too hard!).  Her knees have developed some truly brilliant colours.  Thanks for asking!

The other driver had his own wife--and two young children (in car seats)--in the car.  I have the feeling his wife is doing enough gouging for both of us...

Just so people know, I finally settled the vehicle total loss part of our insurance claim, and was able to replace my Suzuki Grand Vitara with another GV--same year and trim level.  Just brought it home today, after getting fresh winter tires installed.  Still needs a headlight (the seller will provide), as one on the new GV has had a broken retainer for the bulb, and I have to bolt on some stuff I took from the write-off, but other than that, I'm wheeled again.

My wife is doing as well as can be expected, but she may be off work for a bit yet.  Broken/bruised ribs are rough, and her knees are still not quite there (she hit the glovebox with her knees, and damaged her ribs on the seatbelt...).

Glad to hear that all is going well for both of you with hopefully no long term effects. It's easy to replace vehicles, people not so much.

WOW! Geoff, I am happy to hear that you and your wife are, for the most part okay. I am, also glad you didn't have to fight with ICBC. Hope your wife heals up quickly.

Well, it took a week to get sufficient money to replace my vehicle without my being out-of-pocket; they low-balled me at first, but I had a strong case IMO and persisted.

Personal stuff, for my wife and also for myself...that's unresolved as yet, and may continue to be for some time.  But I needed the vehicle for work, so that took initial priority for me.
