Hudson sentenced in road rage incident

BROOKSVILLE | The truck driver caught on camera swerving at a passing motorcycle on May 22, on a rural Bracken County road, was sentenced to prison on Thursday.

Gary L. Hudson, 23, of Pendleton County, entered a guilty plea on Nov. 18, in Bracken Circuit Court to an offer from the Commonwealth's Attorney Office.

He was sentenced Thursday to two years in jail on each of two wanton endangerment counts, 90 days in jail for menacing and a $100 fine for reckless driving. The sentences run concurrent for a total of two years, court officials said.

In the incident, caught on a camera mounted on one of two motorcycles, Hudson is seen driving a truck which enters Kentucky 22 ahead of the motorcyclists and drives in the same direction. As the lead cycle attempts to pass Hudson on the left, Hudson appeared to purposefully steer into the lane and nearly forced the motorcycle off the road. The motorcycle with the camera continued to follow until all three vehicles stopped at an intersection and a verbal altercation with threats ensued.

Hudson is in Mason County Detention Center awaiting transfer to a state prison facility.

Wow. Surprised that this hasn't gotten more attention, like the original thread did. Time to spread this to NON motorcycle specific forums. Drivers need to know, hooliganism* should not be punished by lone vigilantes nearly executing the offenders.

*their riding wasn't that bad in the video, but was probably not legal, either.

Their riding was not legal in the video - but as covered in the original threads, was no excuse for attempted murder.

From what I recall reading from the original threads on different boards the police were not interested in going after them. But I am not 100% sure.

BIG difference between wanton endangerment and attempted murder, so I feel the sentence is fair and just.  Keep in mind that he is now a convicted felon and will have that on his record forever.  Having that on his record, along with some prison time will mean that his future opportunities will be severely limited, especially in this rural area.  That will probably turn out to be a much harsher sentence than the jail time in the long run.  I hope that he learns his lesson and becomes a better person.

I'm amazed he got two years.  Very impressed with the judge.  I doubt he will do much jail time though.

I remember that vid and found it odd the riders had to prove they weren't speeding to garner sympathy from the non riding public.

Sounds like a fair sentence.  At 23 he's a young guy.  Hopefully he will have, and has had, time to reflect on the state-of-mind that led him to do what he did in those moments, and the tragedy that could have resulted.

Reality is, few people are capable of being "rehabilitated".  You can't change someone who is not willing to change.  All the indoctrination to behave isn't going to help anyone who is chronically violent, has a bad temper, and/or pre-disposed to behave that way.  Perhpas age and the mellowing out of testosterone production will help.  Throughout human history, the most effective means of making people behave is the presence of harsh punishment and/or serious consequences.  If they know they will get caught doing bad deeds and the consequences is severe enough for them, most people will behave.  Most.......

I know how much you probably like punishment
but you'd be surprised how how much of an affect treating someone like a human (as opposed to an animal) followed by a little counseling can have.  We already punish more people per-capita than any other country in the world by a pretty big margin.  Clearly that has no real deterrent or rehabilitation value.  Putting this idiot in gen pop for 2 years will only make him worse.  Then he gets out.  What's your big plan then?

What's your big plan now? put this pos up in a club med with counseling? I've never been to prison, but I imagine it's pretty effective for taking guys like this off their high horse. You can act like that in society and usually not take a beating, prison no. I also imagine the thought of going back is a pretty good deterent. Generalizations of course, but true for most.

Rehabilation is a joke.  Decent people (about 1/3 of those sentenced for the first time) with respond well to it just as they will respond well to punishment.  The middle third can go either way and there is no hope for the worst third.

My son works at the Huntsville state pen in Texas (Ferguson unit).  Started out with the really bad ones in Ad Seg (caged up) but has been in GP the past few months.  One thing he's showed us over the past 2 years is that no one gets better from their time inside, especially in GP.  They all have something to prove to each other so they get worse.  That's the culture.  They don't respond to use of force.  The only way the guards can get compliance is by taking away priveleges, which they have too many of.  Otherwise, they're generally ok with being there hanging out with each other like it's one big college dorm (without the alcohol and cigarettes of course).  I have yet to hear one story from his unit about anyone going through any kind of rehab to help them re-enter society.

If nothing else, it will probably realign his view on what tough is.  Standing outside your pickup w/ a bat?  Notsomuch.  Depends on where he ends up but it could dramatically alter his views on who is safe to mess with.  Smile

good to see that justice was served in the end due to the goodness of "video cameras are now everywhere" so this was not just a case of "he said, she said".

Hard for a Public Defender to justify actions recorded in that video..

Who the heck am I gonna play tag with now that my buddy Bubba is locked up?

He'll do that little bit of time standing on his head. Heck back in 1979 I got sentenced to 2 years for stealing a door off of a 1969 Volkswagon Beetle. Stupid, ignorant, and just plain wrong and I deserved to be jailed for it.

The poster who mentioned that the true punishment is the felony conviction hit the nail on the head.  My bit of wanton stupidity when I was 18 years old has slammed many a door closed. No guns,  no leaving the country, no public office, no working for county or state level government, no security clearance, and no ability to vote.  30+ years is a long punishment for a $213.00 door.

Alas, under current law you can't be reenfranchised in Virginia (at least not without intervention from the Governor).
