From the Motorcycle Action Group website.

We all know that the EU intends to make it more difficult to ride a bike, intends to make us all wear hi-viz, make ABS compulsory, make it illegal to modify a bike etc. Here's a chance to make your views known.

03-01-2012 South East MEP holding special 'motorcycle surgery' in Crawley..

Happy New Year!

Let's hope it's a good one for you and if we can keep up the pressure from last year, it should be a good one for Riders' Rights too.

If you live in the South East of England, we are pleased to announce that one of your MEPs, Peter Skinner, is holding a special 'motorcycle surgery' at P&H Motorcycles in Crawley on 14th January, at:

P&H Motorcycles Ltd

61-63 Gatwick Road

Crawley

West Sussex

RH10 9RD

As a result of the huge volume of correspondence he has received from riders in his constituency, he has agreed to meet as many as possible on Saturday afternoon (14th Jan) in perhaps the ideal venue, a bike shop.

He is hoping to hear all your concerns about EU legislation first hand, as well as discuss rider training issues, the state of the retail bike industry and the future of the whole industry in light of various legislation, both proposed and under discussion for future proposal.

If you could arrive before 2pm (time enough to grab a cuppa) Mr Skinner will be available to take questions and hear what you have to say, after 2pm

It is common to visit an MP surgery and discuss local or national issues, but so much of what affects our motorcycling lives now is decided in Europe, this is a great opportunity for us to voice our concerns to an MEP who genuinely wants to understand riders and the bike industry generally.

It should be an interesting afternoon, and remember, P&H is a multi-franchised dealer, so there'll be loads of bikes to look at too...

Words by: Paddy Tyson, Campaigns Manager.

The summary of MAG's campaign position:

A raft of issues emanating from Europe will have a profound effect on riders and the motorcycle industry generally. We must stand up and be heard. Some of these are driven by the EU Commission, like the new Type Approval and Market Surveillance Regulation that will see the introduction of compulsory ABS, the sealing of powertrains from the airbox, through the engine to the final drive (including the diameter and aspect ratio of the rear tyre), restrictions on the aftermarket industry, possible roadside checks by police or other government agencies to inspect emissions, detect owner 'tuning' and more.

There's EU-funded development of electronics to control and govern speeds through warning systems or, ultimately, actual throttle control.

Ireland plans compulsory, full sleeve day-glo jackets for riders and pillions, France is debating compulsory reflective/day-glo clothing. Will UK insurance companies start saying that because we weren't dressed in day-glo it's our own fault that an inattentive driver drove into us? MAG says the onus should not be on the victim.

France also wants to ban bikes over 7 years old from urban areas for environmental reasons! Their congestion is already terrible and putting more riders into cars that pollute terribly when they are stationary, is bonkers.

Bikes are part of the urban transport solution, not problem.

All of us Yurpeens need to make our views known to our MEPs-the cut off date for the new legislation is March. The EU has not undertaken any research to back this load of codswallop.

Most at risk are bikers living in Eire, France, Germany and Spain-all of these countries are introducing legislation against motorcyclists.

What is still unknown is how much this will affect people travelling through an EU country, such as Mericun tourists.

Following confirmation that hi-viz is to become compulsory in France from 2013 and Ireland from 2014, MAG member Jon Wilmer (Regional Rep for Thames Valley) has launched a petition calling on the British Government to put pressure on the European Commission to discipline any member state that imposes clothing standards such as hi-viz on motorcycle riders.

As a Brit living in the USA I am ashamed that the UK has given up thier sovereignty to some bunch of half wits on the continent,, what the hell are you people thinking??  And considering half the countries in Europe are flat broke it seems they still have the money for this kind of rubbish. you people need to start reminding your MP's who the hell they work for!
