My (possibly wrong) understanding is that you need to start with a DVD of the maps to get them loaded onto both your computer (for use with MapSource) and on your GPS. After that you can somehow manage the downloads to update both the PC and the GPS. I didn't see anything in this offer about a DVD. My zumo 450 still has the 2009 maps and I want/need to update it to 2012 for the upcoming riding season.

The download is pretty much just the disk image.  You save that to your PC and you can still make routes, etc without having the GPS unit hooked to the computer.

Hey, the GPS itself was only $99.

The maps are almost the same price.

Ignoring the $65 sale price for a moment (through Amazon), and looking right at the Garmin website, their yearly map updates are $49.99

At that rate, in two years, I could just go out and BUY another NEW GPS that already comes with the latest map!

And Garmin's lifetime maps are $89.99, which nearly DOUBLES the price of the $99.99 GPS unit.

Those prices seem a bit skewed to me, kinda like the ink for an injet printer costing more than buying a whole damn new printer!

Skewed. Today's vocabulary word.

If we had to buy a new engine for our motorcycles every year, and two engines were the price of a whole new motorcycle, I think enterprising individuals would look for alternatives.

For a $99 device, I could see updates being priced at say, something like $14.99 to 19.99. That, to me, represents a fair proportion of updates to the retail price of the item.

Amazon provides you with a code you enter into your Garmin update software. You can only assign it to one device. If you have two gps units you need two codes.

The math in the examples above does not apply to any waterproof Garmin gps. This is a good deal.

Nope, not me.

Then, I make my living creating stuff and selling it, so this hits kinda close to home, for me.

I had the occasion to speak the folks at Garmin yesterday to sort out why my 665 would not update with the new maps.   While I had them on the line I asked if Mapsource was being replaced with Base Camp.   I was told no and that Mapsource will continue to be the On Road routing solution.    Shrug
