Hey folks, my wife and I are kicking around the idea of tour of Oregon this summer, specifically the coast. Any hints on places to stay? Also, on our trip back home what the best route to go back? I would preferr to avoid freeways.....

Lots of mom and pops on 101.   While I'm normally not a guy to make reservations, and have the "had to ride another 150 miles to find a room" horror stories to prove it, I'd make reservations if it's the Orygun coast between May and August.

And be prepared for lots of stop and go with loads of RVs thrown in for good measure.

Pacific City - there's a hotel right across from Pelican Brew Pub, but I can't remember the name.

Oceanside Inn at - ta da! - Oceanside is nice and there's a great restaurant two doors away.

Florence - Driftwood Inn is at cheaper end, but that normally means lots families with small children, but every room leads right to the beach.  OK, only those on the ground floor.   Lol

For the return leg, you may need to dry out from the coast so ride across the Cascades.  US 395 from Mount Vernon to about Ukiah is incredibly scenic.  Ukiah to Pendleton, not so much, but tolerable.  US 395 beats US 97.

new Motel6 in Lincoln City.   Cheap and clean.  About 1 block from the beach. And about 2 blocks from a great McMenamins brew pub (the Lighthouse).

This is my preferred way to get from Castlegar the Oregon Coast.  There is some slab from near Spokane to the Columbia River but nice riding on the north side of the river in Washington and crossing over at Maryhill/Biggs Junction - where I usually grab a cheap motel. Then on the very boring 97 but soon you are in sisters and the most memorable ride on 242 to 128,  Eugene, 126 and then on to the coast at Florence.

Nice choice!!  Great place to ride.!..check out my bike page below, have  pics of many routes u might want thru there, try some of my links. It might give you a few ideas u might use..  You have some nice options from your area..south most anywhere or go west and down thru  the grand coulee area...

Id recommend west  to republic  then south  and across manila creek road  and into grand Coulee..Then south along Banks lake and to the Dalles  via Mattawa/Sunnyside/Mabton/Bickleton/Rosevelt  and  along the N side of the Gorge,  then down the backroads behind MT hood to Sisters ( Check out  my 2006 california trip for a great route from the Dalles down though Detroit/Oakridge/ if you want privacy  )and  loopy the coast a bit then back across  to Ontario ....380 thru Izzy is a nice one. Then straight up thru hells canyon to lewiston. Dont miss the  southern part from Oxbow to Joseph  cause its the best if you like really twisty for hrs!.Even up thru McCall  on 95 is nice!.Either way its great riding in Or.... I am looking to go back this summer..One nice thing is you can loop it and  stay on great roads nearly all the way! My only mistake down there was that  %^&&^^& Interstate  thru seattle cause we ran out of time!haaa..same with the parking lot they call the PCH.
Most of the rest  of those routes are on other years.
Good luck and enjoy!

From Tillamook, OR, do the 3 Capes Scenic route. Be sure to check out the lighthouse on Cape Meares.

Lodging at Pacific City,  http://www.yourlittlebeachtown.com/inn/about

If you have Google Earth, check out the 3d driving directions.  That has got to be one of the coolest things on the internet Inlove

C.  Pacific City, OR
D.  mt. hebo, hebo, or

For really cheap accommodations, don't forget Oregon State Parks and the US Forest Service. The Oregon Coast is littered with very nice campgrounds.

The Moolack Shores motel between Lincoln City and Newport is pretty cool. All the rooms are themed differently (Aviation, Nautical, Olde West, etc.) and they cater to couples rather than families which can be nice for a "just the two of us" getaway. Not expensive, but not bargain basement.

You should include at least 1 night in Florence.  There is a nice little downtown area, many motels of all price ranges and camping too.  I think the best part of the Oregon coast is between Newport and Florence.  You're closest to the coast, and the area is less touristy than the Lincoln City to Newport area.  The northern part from Astoria to Manzanita is mostly inland.  I usually take I-5 to Longview then backroads to Tilamook.

And if you venture further south, stay at the WharfMaster's inn in Point Arena. Very nice.

FYI- I think the most fun we had on our Oregon coast (car) trip a couple of years ago was the 104 mile Rogue River jet boat day trip, starting from Gold Beach.

It was a great mix of nature and fun. Loved sliding sideways at 50mph on a foot of water, missing boulders and logs by inches. Then being slammed into a reverse 180. Oh, and then floating for a while to look at wild life. And repeat.

Good gawd man, do not go putting such accurate but little-known info on the 'net!  You want everybody else to find out?  Next you'l be telling them the coast in Oct. is great.
