OK, the KLR has new tires on the way (to replace the worn out, squared off knobbies it presently has -- feeling the rear raise up 3 inches when you turn is a rush!), I've gone through the systems, tried to understand the mods made (you really thing that's a GOOD place for the fuses?), and generally get familiar with the bike . . . .
The last time I wanted to ride off rad, I could get there PDQ from my house in the Northern Burbs . . . . that was, however, long ago, and all the areas I used to ride have been turned into something revenue generatating . . . ..
I've found some ATV trails in the Bong Recreational Area (!), and some more up by Monroe, but, shees, there's gotta be something closer to the Northern Burbs for a Dirt Donk to get his feet filthy . .. .
Any hints?

Bong recreation was going to be my suggestion - watch out for the stoners taking pictures with the sign on the way in...
There's some trails out by Bristol, WI that are used for snow mobiles that are probably great on a dirt bike in the summer...?

I just found some short fire roads by Palos Park yesterday- ATV's were all over the place. Wanna try that for a short run before hitting WI?

Bong is pretty boring, would use to get use to bike, but beyond that it s less than exciting. Hard to find much around. There is plenty of trails in the U.P. keep us informed of what you find. I am currently tearing mine apart right now to get ready for a early March trip to Death Valley. I have 30k on it, so I need to check valves, put a new shock on it and go through the forks and replace swingarm bearings and all the normal tires, brakes and oil things.

Clean -- yeah, I looked at a topo map -- Bong looks like an idea re-entry point for a rust rider . . . . .
As for the UP, you betcha! Far north Wisconsin too, for that matter -- both are a little further out than I can hit on a Sunday afternoon, though ;-}
HAve big fun in DV!

I hear bong is just gravel roads, nothing special.
In NE IL and Southern WI there's nothing off road to ride. It's up to you to find your own super illegal dual sport trails. You should do well when you get caught. Just dazzle them with with your vocabulary. I don't have those skills, so I just run.
I usually try to ride like someone is chasing me anyways, so it works out well.

Some of us just love gravel roads. And that is what a KLR is made for Bomber. You will find out in a hurry if you end up on a whooped out Michigan single track with one. It is not really a trail bike but an adventure bike. And you know all gravel roads are not created equal especially in the Western US.

Jeff speaks the truth. This guy found that out one year in the UP of Michigan. (Matt knows who I'm talking about)
This was on the annual ATL trip. We would be riding along and he would see a dirt road and just turn off.
And yes that is a KLR.

Oh, you bet I know that the KLR isn't a scrambler (showing my age) . . . . .still and all, I'm looking forward to testing MY capabilities (my less than the bike's at this point) . . . . and, later this summer, Twits on the TWAT . . . .can't wait!

Yes it is actually the "scrambler" concept Bomber! Just exactly the same idea as what you were expected to do with a CL350 or a Yamaha Big Bear back in the day. It is a retro idea. These are not "trail/cross country" bikes at all. It was fun in 1969 so just have fun on gravel roads and very easy 2 tracks with it.

Good point, sir . . . . . .
The bike has capabilities that the rider doesn't -- any trouble we get into will be entirely my responsibility ;-}
