Lane-Sharing Saved My Life!

« on: January 09, 2012, 08:29:49 PM »

OK, it's not exactly new, a friend of mine dropped this off at my house last weekend. His neighbor, who's moving gave it to him. It's a little rough and missing the brackets to hold on the gas tank. A few hours after the drop-off around 11pm I had completed de-gooing the carb (it was sitting in neighbor's garage for a couple years) and engineered a temporary solution for the gas tank. Started right up and runs pretty good. Had some fun terrorizing the local bike-path in the valley that runs along-side the orange bus-line. It's pretty fun, and just the thing a couch-potato like me needs to get into a bit of exercise, part peddling and part covering some ground w/ 2hp moto-assist.  Wink  ....

Since these pictures taken, I already got a new seat. New gas-tank  (including brackets, and assume none leaky petcock) plus new carb is on the way. I cleaned the carb enough to get it running 'pretty good', but assume a brand-new one for 25 bucks is much easier than doing a second cleaning...

A "Short Trip" means 500+ miles.  On shagged out tires.  Running out of gas at least once.

Oh, and at least one "warning" from a "friendly" LEO.

Some of us have EXPECTATIONS of you!   Lol

Haha, PM sent. Though I've started looking around after I received the gift, and of course there's a whole sub-culture for these types of machines. Seems if you've got a spare beach-cruiser type bike laying around, you can pick up the full moto-kit for somewhere in the $125-200 range. I'm talking hi-end Chinese 2-stroke with with gas-tank, drive-chain and sprocket all included!  Lol

Well he could always mount a 20-inch fan on the back..... oh wait.....  Lol

Does the basket make it a 'heavy' sport-touring bike?

Oh man!  Congrats!

I love those things.

About a couple of years ago I pulled the trigger on one.  It was based on a Schwinn Beach Cruiser.  It was a whole lot of fun!!!!  The cops in my area don’t bother harassing people on them as I never got even a glance.  There are a few people here who are riding them but not enough to attract much attention.

My only beef are that the 2-strokers don’t last very long in high heat situations.  Also, you can’t just go to any gas station to full up because you have to pre-mix the fuel/oil, so you’re limited to 75 miles to empty.  Realistically, you don’t want to ride that for more than 50 miles at a time.   Finally, the components used on mine were extremely cheap!  I ended up upgrading the chain guide, the seat, the tires, etc., and pretty soon I was spending some relatively big $$ on a beach cruiser.  I sold it.  I still want to get another one but this time, build it from scratch myself so I can pick and choose the right, higher quality components for a reliable and robust machine.

Have you checked out the forums for motorized bicycles?

One last thing, when I had one, the Lycra clad crowd HATED ME!  They absolutely could not stand the sight of me, and especially when I passed them on the bicycle lane doing 30 mph and they had to breath my 2-stroke fumes!  Hahah!

you should get a fleet of them and start a LA tour company. You can lead the rides or you can give out self guided maps to tour the city on side roads or even side walks!
