Not really a help on hotels, as I camped my way across the north shore. Lots of great parks and campgrounds, however!

Wawa ON - Beaver Motel - small, clean, reasonable and across from gas station. Small, quiet motel at Jackfish Lake 48.824229,-86.942521 degrees just before Terrace Bay. Interesting place to see is Agawa Rock, Lake Superior Provincial Park, Ontario which is located between Sault Ste Marie and Wawa ( see on You Tube at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ShyHwMzEI_E
and good road in with a super walk to the rock wall on the shore, and if you are there from 10-3 there is usually an interpreter there from the Park)_ Great views all over the north shore.

At Marathon, stay at the pink Marathon Harbour Hotel. Book in advance though. It's clean and relatively quiet. Not cheap, but none of the halfway decent hotels on the north shore are. Visit Pebble Beach, it's a must. Follow the main drag in Marathon across the tracks, turn left and look for the little sign on the right side. There's a good Chinese food place in Marathon too. Can't remember the name, but it's the only one. Near the pink hotel. Terrace Bay and Schreiber both have some relatively decent hotels, but they won't be cheap. Stop at the Aguasabon Gorge, it's worth a look. Tons of little lakes and nice scenic areas to stop at along the north shore between Marathon and Nipigon. Rossport has some great views, a nice B&B and some good eating. If you have time, take a detour north on Hwy 11 (turn right just before Nipigon). Ride for an hour or so to Beardmore. The Orient Bay area along the Nipigon River is great. If you have the time. Thunder Bay has lots of hotels and very good places to eat. There are some inexpensive small hotels along Cumberland St (take the first exit into town and drive way down to the lake). But, there's nicer hotels. Either of the two Days Inn's are good. Both are near good restaurants. When you are coming through, send me a PM. If I'm around, I can show you around.
Are you going around the lake? There are some great places to stay and fantastic places to eat across the border in Minnesota.
Enjoy!

Do NOT stay at the Red Dog Inn in Terrace Bay. Nice enough place, but no food or coffee in the morning. The restaurant (when it's open) has good food but VERY expensive (chicken club samich $19! - but it was good) No way I was gonna spend $27 for a plate of Lasagna.
I was planning on camping but it started farkin' pouring before I got there. Long range was for more of the same. Feck it, look for a motel. Saw some bikes parked out front and a bunch cars. Good enough endorsement for me.
Wrong.

Unfortunately, most of the travellers on the north shore are for business, usually contractors and tradespeople. Therefore the price of lodging and of food is much higher than it needs to be. I agree about the Red Dog. If you stay in Marathon, you can spend a very leisurely drive to Thunder Bay and see lots of sights. But, you can easily make it from Sault Ste Marie to T Bay in a day and avoid all that. It's about a 7 hour ride. But, it leaves little time for scenic-ness.
